The Eyeborg Documentary compares real life augments with Deus Ex biotech
24
Eidos Montreal commissioned a cyborg to document real-world advancements in biotechnology that could serve as precursors to the gadgets used in Deus Ex: Human Revolution, titled The Eyeborg Documentary. Why "Eyeborg," you ask? Filmmaker Rob Spence has a prosthetic eye -- but this isn't your grandma's prosthesis. Spence's is a wireless camera that transmits footage to a receiver, with no connection to his optic nerve, not to mention it looks pretty cool when he reveals it from under his eye patch.
Spence documents the height of artificial-limb and augmented-reality advancement, following a man with a computer chip behind his retina, a health-bar-encoded firefighting helmet, two men's bionic arms and three bionic legs, all in a very viewable 12-minute timeframe. We may not have machines guns in our forearms yet, but this stuff is still spectacular.

I'd love to show this vid to all the "HUMANITY IS DOOMED" nancys.

How many of you would replace your natural limbs with superior artificial ones?
I would for sure.
I would for sure.

I'd only do it if it were to replace dying/dead organs/limbs. Like, should my heart fail, I WANT a damn artificial one, damn you.

Not if my current one isn't failing. I wouldn't sacrifice the immense pleasures of touching, feeling, smelling or tasting for the only benefit of being "better".

Hell no... Did you see how much pain wolverine was in when he got those bones? I wouldn't want to go through that.

How queer...Just had a converation with my friend about cyborg tech, minutes before this was posted... We're being watched, fellas.

So if I were to pop my eye out with a melon baler and cram a sugar cube camera into my skull I would somehow be transformed into a cyborg?
This isn't ZOMG DEUCE EX MACHINA IZ NAO..... this is an extremely niche video camera....
I'll hold off being impressed until such a time as said camera actually hooks up to the optic nerve and delivers at least comparable vision to that of a normal eye. Any Night vision or built in thermal imaging will be gravy.

@Scuffles The filmmaker's eye, while kind of cool, is probably the least impressive thing in the video. The parts about leg and arm augmentations and the technology being developed are pretty interesting and exciting. We may not have any really amazing cybernetic augs yet, but the exciting thing is that this video brings to light how close we are coming to such a future.

Without a decent BMI(brain machine interface) the technology will stagnate. Don't get me wrong the general tech has a ways it can evolve as is, but its pretty close to the wall.
Once they hammer out a BMI the possibilities move from merely tweaking a set of passive sensors or systems that attempt to anticipate what you want them to do to being nearly limitless.

@Scuffles You are absolutely right, but also a bit too pessimistic. I mean no this isn't Neuromancer, but 5-10 years ago we wouldn't have thought a good deal of what is in this video would even be possible.
Not too shabby. I'd wager in another 5-10 years you might have grounds for being impressed.

Those firefighter helmet prototypes looked really cool, for real life use and possibly gaming ;)

That was an awesome video. Also, that firefighter thing was awesome and looks like that suit upgrade thing from Crysis 2.

@AnatomyHorror I am blind in one eye too. The other is starting to not work as well. I am not sure I could really explain it...nothing is "blurry" or anything but I just don't see details as well as I used to.
I'd love to have a fancy prosthetic eye that functioned just like a normal eye. If it could zoom and all that jazz..all the better.
I wonder though, how you could ever cause a cybernetic eye to "zoom" or do any other function that a normal eye could not, using any form of communication from your brain which does not have any way to output a command like "zoom".
I guess it could be "taught" that when you squint and focus on a smaller area that you intend to zoom or something like that.... but it will be interesting to see where all of this goes!

"How does your arm work?"
"Well I use the remaining arm muscles to make it move."
"You mean THESE muscles?"
Way to rub it in man.

Gotta say, I think the firefighter helmet is the most impressive. Gotta show that to my dad(a former FDNY firefighter)

It's a cool thing to explore...unfortunately, I could not get more than like 3 minutes into it. I have a serious phobia of crap dealing with eyes, and the one guy's bionic eye creeped me out way, way too much.
But still, it's pretty amazing. I think groups like the military are the ones mainly pushing for this kind of stuff, because as you can imagine this would lead to improved soldiers.

This is so lame. It's no bionic, cyborg, or anything.
The guy stuffed a tiny video camera into his eye socket.
I can do that with my butt-hole, it won't make me a cyborg.
Call me when the camera is wet-wired to his brain so that he cans see out of the camera. (Which, BTW, they are already doing in real med-labs with extremely low resolution and no color... but starting to learn how to do).
But this guy.... loser.
