I see the power of this not doing so well. Why couldn't they just make a sequel to Longest Journey/Dreamfall? A bunch of stubborn developers.

@Dance Mofo DreamFall even though Dreamfall Chapters has been put on temporary hold for now, it should be hopefully coming out around late 2012 to early 2013.

This game looked interesting because of it's setting, but the microtransactions on top of subscription crap is a deal breaker. I don't pay 15 dollars a month just to spend another 15 dollars on a cool costume, pet, or mount I see. Free, cash shop based mmos are becoming higher quality by the weeks, and pulling this kind of crap is not the kind of way to compete with them. I want to earn my cosmetics through secret quests or rare drops like the good old days.

@Yuutuu

Ideally id prefer one off payment, But thats not going to happen

So subscription would be better, i really dont like micro-transactions, I cant enjoy the game fretting over whether its worth it or not.

@Yuutuu I concur. I have a hard time believing that they believe that people will buy for their game, pay a monthly fee, and then buy content that's already in the game.

Sorry guys, but you're not WoW yet.

Funcom has a long and colorful history of bungling MMOs, it'll be interesting to watch how this one launches... from a safe, non-invested distance. GW2 is looking like the most likely current prospect for the post-WoW MMO crowd.

EQ2 has been doing this for a very long time. No one complained about it until now. Although EQ2 most of those items are obtainable through playing the game.

I will never understand MMO players or MMOs. There's barely any actual gameplay there.

Aww. And I was really hoping to play this game.

Guess I'll stick with Guild Wars 2.

From the gameplay of the mmo i thought for sure it be free2play with micro transaction for the clothes. If they want to charge a subscription for this game they better start doing a lot of improvements or else they going to suffer the same fate as other mmo.

So I guess my biggest question is

What sort of compensation are they going to offer the early adopters of the game who paid retail, who paid monthly and who might have paid into the cash shop ....... when this game goes F2P in three months?

TL:DR
I'm fine with Subscriptions.
I'm fine with F2P w/ Cash shops.
I am not fine with double dipping.

I'm not so certain that this will work in their favour. Sub + MT is notoriously controversial and very few can pull it off longterm. Need to see what they plan to sell via the shop but I can easily see TSW turn F2P down the road.

Hm. The last MMORPG to do this Sub + Microtransaction model was Star Trek Online. This is not a good thing.

I was actually kinda looking forward to TSW, but now? Sub _and_ microtransaction? I don't like MT in the first place, and when paired with a monthly sub? Narp...

"Pay to play our game! And pay to get everything that is not cheap and crappy default items!"

That puts me off, even though I'm gonna play it any way. I'm ok with the subscription but not a fan of Real Money Trade shops for in game itens.

I've been following the game for a long time and could possibly be one of the games to get me back into MMOs.

But in my gut I know they will be going F2P in 3-6 months (where they will probably see even more success I hope. I'd still be there on day one if the client was free and I just had to worry about the subscription after a trail period, which is another option they will probably explore in a few months.

This is just the way the MMO industry is going right now. Can't do subs if you don't have a WOW like development budget. I just have to wait a little longer to play SW I guess.

So I guess the monsters in this game aren't really evil -- just lonely.

Come on guys. Other MMOs that have done this are seen as money grubbing at best (Star Trek Online) and utter disappointments at worst (Champions Online).

You're not Cryptic, so stop trying to steal their bad press. One or the other. Never ever both.

I hate the f2p model with a passion to be honest. F2P!! but you need to shelve out cash for items essential to gameplay no thanks... ill be content paying a monthly fee and contemplating if buying a shiny pony is worth the extra 20 bucks i find in my jeans.

If the cosmetic items are available in-game as well as the store, then that's fine, but I don't want to spend money on top of a monthly sub on something I can only get in the store.

Experience potions and the like, I don't really care about. That's for power gamers, and does little to impact me.

If they are talking about things that are vanity/convenience items only, then it does not matter. WoW has been doing this with pets and the 2 mounts. There is nothing wrong with this.

Now if we are talking about microtransactions for content (outside of major expansions), then it would be a problem.

It is a stupid move to block acquiring customers through 1. Box sales 2. Subscription.

Times are changing, evolve your business model or suffer. GW2 will pound you!
