Halo 4 begins The Reclaimer Trilogy
134
The new Halo series will be named the Reclaimer Trilogy, developer 343 Industries revealed at the PAX Halo 4 panel. Halo 4 is a direct sequel to Halo 3, and the new trilogy will emphasize Master Chief as both a character and a force to be reckoned with. The iteration of Master Chief in this year's E3 teaser was not the final version, and 343 wants to sell "the fantasy that Master Chief is an 800-pound hero that is part tank, part jet fighter" with the Reclaimer Trilogy. Cortana will play a large role in Master Chief's storyline, in a "unique relationship that hasn't been addressed in other games," 343 said.
The Reclaimer Trilogy will balance classic Halo gameplay with innovations in weaponry and abilities to give long-time fans a sense of something new, 343 said. Creative director Josh Holmes described Halo 4's overall gameplay in simple, traditional terms: "Well, it plays like Halo."

@copa Jesus, why is anything beyond 3 releases considered milking? A (real) Halo game comes out once every 2-3 years, not every year or 6 months like you people make it sound. Give it a rest.

Can we all agree to stop screaming that a franchise is being milked because they're working on the next major installment in it?
This goes for CoD, Battlefield, Final Fantasy, etc... Seriously, you're going to jump on a company for releasing new games in their most successful IPs?

No one's saying it's being milked because a new game is coming out...
We're saying it's milked because this is the 4th Halo game to come out since Halo 3 allegedly finished the fight...

And all 3 that have come out since then all took place before the events of Halo 3 and this will be the first to take place after Halo 3. Not to mention even Bungie admitted during the development of Halo 3 that it was simply the end of the trilogy, not the franchise itself.
I mean seriously, this is like saying nothing related to Star Wars should have ever came out after Return of the Jedi cause that was the end of the story and they beat the Empire.

Yes, a new unrecognized alien threat somewhere in the galaxy, most likely involving some sort of ancient pre-curser technology that may or may not be ring shaped. Military deployment of earth defense force ensues. Entirely different, indeed.

That you can partly blame Microsoft and Bungie for. Bungie had another contract for 2 more games which they just pushed out the window to get it done with, Halo Wars was in Development for a long time before ODST was announced

@Gibbeynator There's 100,000 years to the history/timeline of Halo. Master Chief finished the fight against the Covenant, that's only 27 years of that massive history/timeline. I'm excited to see where this new trilogy goes.

The difference between Mario and Halo is that Mario changes and improve every releases (except for Galaxy). 2D mario jumps to 3d mario and Sunshine took a huge leap into Galaxy. Halo on the other is very or sometimes completely the same across multiple sequels and prequels. Halo 1 - 3 is very similar with very little changes and Reach actually tried something new. IMO Halo is kind of being milk.

Super Mario Brothers 1-3 were pretty similar. Mario has evolved over its LONG history because the technology underpinning games has evolved greatly too. Mario wouldn't even still be up for discussion if it hadn't kept up with game technology. We are now at the point where major transitions are no longer taking place, until we get true VR or holograms or something. Mario is still, at its heart, the same game it was 25 years ago: jump from platforms to bad guys to platforms, repeat. That isn't to say it isn't fun, but acting like it's changed markedly is overdoing it. If you plunked some from 1990 in front of Mario Galaxy (and somehow got them really used to 3D game instantly), it's not like they wouldn't recognize Mario for what it is.

The fact you have to distinguish real from non-real halo games means it's being milked. Mario is not even being milked by the way. It's way beyond that.

@Xcrucio CoD IS being milked though. New game every year? Check. Slowly deteriorating quality? Check. Precedent of the publisher milking a series to its death? Check (I'm looking at you Guitar Hero and Tony Hawk).

If you can play Halo: CE and Halo 3 and instantly realize the differences you're an idiot. Yes, they're both FPS. Yes they both have recharging shields. But Mario also will always be a platformer where you jump on bad guys to kill them and collect power ups that you lose when you touch an enemy. It will be broken up into levels, you will try and rescue the princess, you will collect coins for free lives, etc. This is what makes Mario, Mario. Master Chief will always be a space soldier killing aliens and talking to Cortana inside his head. This is what makes Halo. This is why they brand the game with the same name, because it is a similar experience. Mario in the first ten years of existence went from Mario Bros, to Lost Levels (SMB 2 in Japan, the actual non-Doki Doki Panic sequel), to SMB3, to Super Mario World. Not a lot of change. You get an overworld map, Yoshi, and different power ups. Still a boss at the end of a set of stages, still move from the left side of screen to right, still collecting 100 coins for a 1-up, still jumping on koopas and goombas for enemies.
The only difference is Mario was your childhood hero, Chief is not.

I think the "part jet" is perhaps them saying they want to emphasize the sleekness and agility of the Spartans that is in the backstory, but never really brought out in the games themselves up to this point. It's been more walking tank so far.

@This Little Man Says His Name Is Read my comment again. AGAIN! I never said Bungie didn't. But you cannot deny that with ODST & Reach, they were in it for themselves and just wanted to finish out the 5 game contract. This falls in especially with Reach, with their "We did it for the fans" BS. Yet almost anything the fans wanted they didn't get, and they just messed up the universe by adding a whole section of crap that didn't exist.
If you remember Bungie & Microsoft have previously licensed "Halo" out for books this brought us "The Official Prequel - The Fall of Reach" see that word "Official"? They can't just throw it on anything it has to be approved by them, yet in the end they didn't care they just threw that out the window and ignored all the fans by giving the statement "We don't use the books in our universe" or something along those lines.
Bungie DID care about Halo, when it first started. Watching that Vidoc for the franchise you can tell. Halo 1, 2 & 3 were and are some of my favorite games ever. But we know and Bungie knows that they screwed up when they made Reach.
Thus why I think 343, once again cares about the Halo Franchise & its fans. They are listening to us, this is why there is a new patch with original CE gameplay, they are removing bloom on weapons, bringing back old maps for the people who want them. But at the same time they are applying to the new audience that loves all of that, new playlists and additions to the maps, all while making sure they listen to what we say.
They are doing a lot more with the Halo franchise, that actually helps the universe. I can't wait.
