Agreed. The Dragons will be less one shadow soldier in their chaotic army.

There have been at least 4 other ways to sign up for beta over the course of at least the past year, including signing up for the newsletter, and taking the "Which Faction Are You" test that has been available on their website since pretty much the announcement of the game.

The integration of Facebook is just their first big marketing push.

@Apakal I won't be crying myself to sleep by any means, and I think Facebook can be a great way to get further word out about your games and whatnot, but when I see "Facebook exclusives" so to speak I can't help but think, "Well. Sucks to be everyone without Facebook who is interested in this." That's all. :-)

I wish this game all the best though, and I'm sure there will be other Facebook-free opportunities to attempt to get in the beta, such as what you've mentioned.

I actually didn't see the part about in-game items. I feel your concern on that. But if Funcom is smart, they won't give away anything serious. Game is all about your skill sets anyways. Items are supposedly pure vanity (weapons excluded I think).

They're rewarding people for participating in viral advertising, and spreading their game across facebook. No facebook, no advertising, no reward. It happens vOv

Looks pretty interesting. This reminds me of the White Wolf tabletop "World of Darkness" rpg setting (that's a good thing to me anyway), though they could add a little more nuance to the factions...

Funcom has said they haven't forgotten about all those other signups. If you signed up for the newsletter, took the test, or participated in a TSW event at a convention, you're still in the mix.

I'm not going to have to answer to my family when this crap starts posting that I'm fighting religious zealots and dragons by night, am I? I already pretty much had that talk when I dressed up for a Cure concert back in '98.

Or you could learn to control what access and options apps have on your Facebook. You don't have to allow anything to post to your wall if you don't want to.

Facebook is not that complicated...

Did Jesse Isenzucker just reply to me!? Could you tell me what button I push to "Like" needlessly condescending asshats on my Facepage?

Thanks in advance for the tip. You're a regular "Clippy", Jesse!

They've already announced it will be subscription fee and cash shop.

Blizzard can do that because Blizzard can do anything.

But that's a rough way for this game to start.

Yeah, I'm positive most people are viewing this beta as "demo the game to see if it's worth downloading when it goes F2P two months later".

What with monthly fees AND an item shop, I don't see this succeeding regardless of however much money they pump into marketing. Hell, they could re-unite Philip Michael Thomas & Don Johnson for a promotional concert tour and it'd still fail on that setup.

@RickGhastly

AoC currently uses a similar hybrid model -- F2P, subscription option, and a cash shop -- and its been a huge success, which says a lot for a game that had such a poor launch. Funcom really stepped up on AoC and ultimately delivered a solid product that continues to get constant support and improvement.

This game has a lot more going for it as well. A huge amount of skills, no traditional levels or character trees, no gear, an emphasis on strategy, puzzles, and actual player skill, a supposedly deep and involving story...

There hasn't been a ton of hands on time for the media or anyone really, but what I've seen so far has been positive. Its one to watch at the very least.

There's no denying that they've done a great job with Conan but the operative word here is "option" when we're talking about subscriptions. But yes, this looks like a contender once they work out the obvious kinks.

Yup, pledge allegiance to one of three factions that operate in the shadows, outside the view of the world.. by signing up for, and broadcasting that allegiance, on the world's largest social media site.

uhm yeah why was there an ad for goldman sachs?

i love the concept of a World of Darkness style situation globally, however i think they might be hurting themselves by limiting the gameplay to only certain types of characters in this game. WoD had five main books Werewolves, Fae, Mages, Geists, and Vampires. Instead we see here that they only allow for a Mage style setting for players to explore. I think i may wait to see what WhiteWolf has in store for us with their game.

@(Unverified) The WoD MMO will probably not allow for multiple playable races at launch, probably only vampire at first and the others from expansions or whatever if it does well. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to be able to roll Fae or something but getting the clans for vampires right is enough of a task for any company. I'd rather they get that perfect then go onto the other supernaturals.

At this point I am just itching for a reason to kill my WOW account. This one could be it. Don't forget Firefall in December. That may be enough to keep me busy until SW launches next year.

@RickGhastly The fact you went to a Cure concert at all has everyone in your community worried. Need to check to see if you still have the nardos dude. Not the type of player SW is looking for.

I hope this turns out well, it has lots of tasty bits and I think the setting is a great idea so they stand out as an MMO.

I hope to get into the beta and see what they have to offer.

I took their test when it first came and and then took the new one, the descriptions and the questions slant differently now and I ended up in another faction : O
