Pax East being over Easter isn't going to help matters.

I can't believe such a terrible decision would come from Penny Arcade. Not only will attendees have to decide, but now developers are forced to leave for the Easter weekend too. This makes it less desirable for devs to attend personally, which will result in a worse show for everyone.

@MasterYogurt

I'm not flaming or anything, but why is being over Easter such a big deal?

Doesn't that mean people will likely have free-days or an actual excuse to go to PAX without being in the office?

I understand Easter is a religious holiday for Christians, so you might be talking from that side. But, I kind of have an inkling that not all Attendees are Christians ;).

Also as a Developer in the Industry, I don't see how leaving for Easter weekend to participate at PAX East is a bad idea at all. :)

I agree that not all attendees are Christians.

But from a company perspective, it sucks to ask people to leave their families for a large amount of Easter - even for the nonreligious it's still possible that they get together with family on that day.

And I think it's fair to say that it's actually offensive to the Christians who attend that they'd put it over Easter. That's actually telling them that the most important day of their religion is meaningless. Again, you're allowed to say and do what you're want, and, yes, it will affect a smaller portion of their audience than many other types of shows, but that doesn't make it not offensive.

If it got scheduled over Ramadan I bet there'd be a larger outcry.

A ton of people choose to spend it with their families, it will undoubtedly hurt attendance.

@MasterYogurt - A lot of the time, these decisions come down to when the convention centre is available. That's the reason why PAX Prime was last weekend instead of the upcoming holiday weekend when it normally occurs.

They may not have had any other choice.

Yeah, I know there were a few possible dates, and they probably don't have seniority in the venue so they didn't get to pick first. There was a very early date, and this one, and they picked it. They also weren't particularly apologetic, and for a duo that is trying to aid the ushering in of the generation of nerds with kids (as they are indeed nerds with kids) one would expect them to be more understanding/accommodating.

I wouldn't be able to go at that time anyhow; if my workload is anything like it was last semester I'll be balls deep in 80+pages of graduate research papers. Ideally it'd be in late Feb-early March.

I understand some of your points about Easter, but I'm a Christian, and I don't consider it offensive. I will probably skip that day of PAX to go to church and be with family, but sometimes things are scheduled on Easter. The fact that it's on Easter weekend means that I can go on Monday, too, without skipping class, so it all evens out. An apology would be nice, but whatever.

And the Ramadan thing sounds kind of silly. That's a whole month, Muslims don't get offended when things are planned for September.

I know you agreed not all attendees are Christian, but you seemed almost too agreeable. Let's be fair, in this country, it's probably the case that most of the devs are Christian (in some capacity).

However, let's look at another statistic: How many Christians treat Easter as an important family holiday? Last I looked, there were two days that slacker Christians MUST attend church on: Christmas and Easter. Of those two, only Christmas is considered a travel holiday. Nobody gets days off for Easter (unless they work on Sunday), so usually, people just go to church where convenient. I know plenty of people who insist they must go to church on Easter...but none of them feel its important to hang out with family and/or loved ones on Easter.

Easter is more like the "easy" day of religious obedience. You do you time, but you don't have to deal with tons of personal and travel logistics. Also: think of how delighted Boston churches will be with the huge spike in attendance on Sunday.

I dont know. Easter is a tough sell, and East is always smaller then Prime anyways developers not attendance). That just means shorter lines for me on Sunday, hopefully the food court wont be under-staffed

You know, when you're there it really doesn't seem like 70,000 people. Or maybe it's because there was a HUGE amount of space this year.

I don't get why the numbers matter. It's selling out plain and simple.

I'd just like to say that while it's great for PA and Publishers/Developers that there were 70k people at this PAX, for the Con-goer it sucked.

The lines for everything were immense. I saw 6 big name titles the entire weekend. Between 2hr+ lines, needing to eat, sleep, etc. there is just not enough time to see everything.

I really wish they'd limit ticket sales to maybe 55k.

I know the lines were awful for triple A titles (they had to shut down the Mass Effect 3 line on Saturday for a bit because it was over an 8 hour wait at 11 am) but still if you timed it right you could sneak into areas and hit things while everyone else was at the major panels. And there is no way you could see everything. There were tons of Sophie's choice for panels and concerts.
