It is rumored that Major Nelson must lick the very same $100 bills in order to uphold the timed exclusive agreement for DLC.

And then the industry becomes ruled by microtransactions and premium DLC.

Sigh, I guess some people really do have more money than sense.

Or access to their parents credit cards.

I'm not sure what you mean?

>EA removes online functionality from games
>Tries to force people to install origin
>Is ruled by the devil incarnate
>In it for the money (no interest in the consumer, only profit margins)
>Making microtransactions and DLC the only way to get the full experience from some games
>Announcing DLC before the game has even been released

The cost really isn't the issue, it's about the content that comes with the cost. $15 for a pack consisting of 5 maps? That's a good deal. It's not about the price, it's about the content that the price is attached to.

Now, if they raise the price to $20 and keep it at 4-5 maps per pack, there is a problem. But if they raise the price to $20 and give it 7-8 maps, the value is still there.

I don't understand why you think $15 for 5 maps is a good price.

$50 should buy you a call of duty game for example.

This includes the single player component (all the levels, guns characters and locations), the co-op component (nazi zombies or spec ops) and the multiplayer component (including many game-types and usually about 15-20 maps to being with).

Paying $15 for 5 maps wouldn't be such a rip-off until you compare the amount of content you get from the DLC with the amount there is out-of-the-box.

@Rob Liv

You make it sound like games coming out with 15-20 Multiplayer maps on disc is Standard...and I don't believe that's ever been the case.

Out of the box 10-12 is usually the standard. More so, the $15 is still a reasonable price when you look at what the purpose is. You a selling a supplement to a single component of the game. It's an extra add-on if you care that much about getting more out of your game.

Whenever you bundle the original game together, you are ALWAYS going to get it for a cheaper price than had you purchased everything separately, however, just because you get all that content doesn't mean you will play it, so you could throw a chunk of that $60 Price Tag down the drain. But it's similar to what happens with Rock Band releases. The Discs sell for $60 with 80 tracks or so, but DLC tracks (used to supplement you experience if you really want it) sell for $2, the the better value is with the Disc for sheer content. Does that mean the DLC is too expensive in comparison? No, not at all. You can't promise that everyone who buys the game will continue to buy content, but you continue to provide it as an option (though for slightly more to compensate for a decrease in sales between the original game the DLC packs).

But breaking it down, let's say the breakup goes $20 for all 3 components. CoD games usually come with about...10 maps or so. That averages to $2 per map. That makes the maps in the map pack about $1 more expensive, not that big of a deal.

But if you want to further break it down you can redistribute the money of how you think you are spending it based on time. Let's say that you barely touch the Singleplayer and Spec Ops mode, so will give them a value of $10 each, while the Multiplayer where hours to days will be spent time wise, would equate to $40 of your $60 purchase, thus the maps you payed for run for about $4 each, $1 more expensive than those in the map pack...so now the cost of the map pack doesn't look nearly as bad.

In all honestly, there are so many ways to break it down, it's all about where you are going to get your time in with the game, how much time you will invest into it, and if you want to continue the experience that determines what makes the value. Just because it cost something doesn't mean anything.

Since the margin on digital downloads is essentially all the money after R&D costs are covered, I'm sure they're patting themselves on the back even harder.

It's sad how they make SO much money and are SO successful... that they charge MORE for their DLC. You'd think they could charge less or have some form of a "deal" for having the best-selling franchise this gen?

@MyAbsolution they won't be charging less for DLC anytime soon cause millions of gamers don't mind paying it so until a lot of people start complaining and stop buying it will never change.

Once you let a company know they can get away with priced extortion and price gouging, that becomes their business model. Especially if they have an army of clueless fanboys (Apple)

+1 for Prodigy reference

As far as digital revenues increasing, it was only a matter of time. Eveything will eventualy be distributed digitally. Disc will go the way of cassette tapes, 5.25 floppies, 8-track tapes, and records.

As a far as COD maps, I for one am happy to see the content made available. It allows you to enjoy the game longer but with new challenges. I only wish they made more maps available. Burnout Paradise is another title that comes to mind (from EA) that released a lot of DLC. Thing is, I think cost is the biggest concern from a consumer stand point. I'm sure everyone would like to see cheaper DLC.

Good for them? I guess it's really just a vocal minority that complains about map pack pricing. Or maybe they're complaining and then turning around and coughing up the cash anyway. That seems more likely.

If I remember correctly, Microsoft makes a 40% commission on everything sold on Xbox Live, so that means Activision is bringing home about $9.00 a map pack....Microsoft is taking the other $6. Of course, like I said, that's assuming that I'm remembering Microsoft's take home percentage correctly. I think $15 is too high for a map pack, and I haven't bought any for Black Ops. I buy the map packs for the Modern Warfare games, and I don't by them for the games in-between, so I sort of lower my overall map costs that way by only buying them every other game. If I do buy other CoD maps, I wait till the game is super old and buy them at 1/2 off or less. There are still large online populations for some of the older games e.g. World at War.

Finally, Kotick has talked about finding some "extra" way to leverage the CoD franchise and make a little more money off of it. First, there is CoD Elite, but he's also made public statements that it bothers him that CoD's usually make up 2 or 3 of the top 10 xbox live activity games, and he feels like Activision isn't really milking the franchise as well as it could. In other words, he feels like they Microsoft and Sony are getting the popularity of CoD on their franchises, but that Activision should deserve some lesser royalty rate or some other financial benefit from producing games that are the most popular on their services... I mean, unless Activision wants to go into the console business, he'd really be screwing up trying to strongarm Microsoft or Sony about anything.
