When Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey left Dead Space developer Visceral Games at EA, it was rumored that they'd take the Call of Duty experience into the third-person perspective. Then some ... things, happened. Sledgehammer Games went radio-silent and a year later, it was revealed that Schofield and friends were working with Infinity Ward to complete Modern Warfare 3.
But what about our dreams of a third-person Call of Duty? What about them? "We came on board to make a third person action adventure game, in the Call of Duty franchise," Schofield said in a video feature on Gamespot, "and we were working on it about six months." Condrey was matter of fact about the reasoning behind Sledgehammer's action-adventure title. "There are a lot of fans out there who enjoy games like Uncharted, so you can imagine that genre meeting a world-class franchise."
Condrey decided to rub it in a little more. "We had a prototype together that was pretty compelling, and it looked really good." But the chance to help make Activision's big gun shoot straight has probably killed its would-be offshoot. "The opportunity to work on the biggest thing in the industry with ... Infinity Ward, that's demonstrated that they know how to do exceptional software, was just an opportunity we couldn't (pass up)."

Yeah, we already have a world class franchise in that genre. It's called Uncharted.

Gun fights in third person? No thanks. I don't care how much people hate the classic FPS "first person" and "over the shoulder" camera views, if it's third person then it'll be annoying as hell to shoot and aim a gun.

We need second-person shooters. A companion watches the main character shoot. Surely, at first thought it sounds silly, but the "second-person" could set up an appropriate scenario with his own hands for his friend. Or, you're a ghostly, dead friend of the lead, and you guard this man through the battlefield.

Because the title of the game has anything to do with it, right?
That's like saying a 3rd person Halo or a first person Gears would be bad, just on principle, which is not only completely lacking in any logic, but a patently stupid assertion.
If its done right, it would work just fine. The title of the game doesn't give any inkling otherwise.
Have a nice day.

I think you're confusing 3rd person with isometric. 3rd person can be any camera angle that looks down on the charcacter. (Including but not limited to over the shoulder and isometric views). This game was most likely an over the shoulder game.

Yes, i've played Dead Space, Fallout, and Bioshock (couple example that present said camera position) but it's STILL hard to have as much precision as first-person camera mode. It's easy to press the "shoot" button to vaguely shoot so-in-so enemy.
...unless the game had a special mode for precision shooting.

Can't help but feel this twitch shooter genre [that CoD's known as] would mix well with that of the more tactical 3rd person shooters (SOCOM, MGO etc).
Sure it could try the Uncharted route... But we have Uncharted for that... And I heavily doubt there game could be as well made (read: look as good) and have as much charater as Uncharted does...

I hope Kojima does more with MGO. Evidence that there's still room for excellent 3rd person shooters.
I haven't really gotten into Socom 4 but the reviews sounds really mixed.

Yeah, I'm sure you couldn't pass it up seeing a fractured Infinity Ward scrambling together to pump out the "next big thing" and with Activision breathing down your neck.

I can just see them getting word of the broken Infinity Ward working tirelessly, sweating under pressure of the Activision overlords. They look at each other briefly before running out the door at the same time leaving computers on and code half-finished yelling "I'm not missing that!".

@agemyth oh yeah sounds so inviting like working on a rock pile I think that what is left of Infinity Ward needed more help with MW3 so Activision killed the third person call of duty for good or at least for now and they have Sledgehammer games running Interference for them.

This is a shame, in my opinion. I stopped caring about the CoD franchise shortly after MW2 came out (they're too same-y for me), but I would've loved to see where this went. A little diversity goes a long way, even if the trail was blazed by others before it.

Wow... did this guy really say "World-Class"? Nothing about CoD is world class. The fans are dumbass's that keep buying the same shitty game every year. Its getting worse then Madden, much much worse. I'll buy another CoD when they take a 3 year break like the LAST good one CoD 2.

Hrm, something new attempted in Call of Duty was denied... that's pretty funny since the biggest complaint is that their games have just been more of the same.
Board Meeting:
"Hey we got this new idea for a CoD game!"
"...I'm apprehensive but go on."
"Okay, it's going to be third person an..."
"No thanks."
"Wait what? You're denying me just because I want to change the perspective?"
"It's too much for one game fans won't even be able to recognize it as a CoD game!"
