I'll make the required "Let's hope for an android port" comment so everyone else doesn't have to.

I don't think you understand how the internet works...

People CAN, and people WILL repeatedly complain. Even if somebody else already has...

@Hank Hill Seeing all the apps on iOS sure makes me jealous as an anti-Apple fanboy and staunch Android supporter. : (

Yeah see this is why I continue to stick with the iPhone. I really want to switch it up and get a WP7 or Android device (kinda tired of iOS) but developers seem to support iOS first/the most.

Is dead island various disconnected maps and not a contiguous game world?

I one massive open map. It's pretty smart when you find something cut off from the road, Eg a survivor or a new gun.

I hope the $3 app trend never even becomes a trend.

What a horrible, horrible idea.

Interesting but dunno if I want to pay 2.99 to know where the items are at.
I'll play the game first then decide.

Booo, not automatic?

This seems excessive to me. I'm a tech nut, and this makes even me hrmmm at the necessity of using TWO devices to play games.

It would be nice if it connected to your gamer tag and automatically updated. Also, this should be the "buy the game new, get something extra" insentive (with something else for non IOS having people.)

Still, I may get it if it's universal and good at keeping track of what I have.

It's because iOS has waaaaaaaay more market share than any other phone. If they want their product to reach the largest possible audience, then they're going to go with iOS first and foremost.

Lets see... I could pay the $3 for this app to get a tiny screen of maps or information.

Or wait a few days for it all to be released for my viewing pleasure on the interwebs in full-screen, easily seen goodness. If there was some connectivity between it and the game it would actually be worth it, but honestly this isn't all that special...

Yeah I feel the same.

Too bad, I got excited when I first saw the headlines and believed that the two devices would be connecting in realtime making it a proper minimap.

Hrmm.. something tells me marketing is missing the mark here. I don't know one person at my studio that owns an iPhone. Perhaps the marketing department has iPhones.... but not the people who play games.

Every major publisher and dev studio I've worked with or contacted in Japan, Korea, Canada and the UK have all had iphones. I was getting a tour around a mid-sized studio in Canada last week and I got an email.

Almost every person in that room pulled an iphone out of their pocket. (it was a small room with the board of directors and producers though)

@Rain

I've worked with Edmonton, Vancouver, but am in the US right now yeah.

Producers and the board of directors don't play games. They are way too busy counting stacks and deciding who to fire to cover losses for their poor choices or the day before launch for the first time opening up documents of change lists/work-flow reports/etc to figure out why their game turned out to be complete shit.

I was specifically referring to artists, software engineers, database managers, embedded testers, IT, etc etc.

Most of the time company policy doesn't allow for confidential communication over such a closed insecure system. There isn't much support from Apple until late last year from Apple for corporate/internal software. All the good stuff is designed for WinMo 6.5, Android or Blackberry (productivity/secure/internal).

Don't forget about iTouches and iPads. Cause, you know, there are other iOs devices besides the iPhone.

It's like Windwaker's Minimap when you connect a GBA to a Gamecube.
May that little purple lunchbox rest in peace.

An interesting concept, though, I don't think it'll take off too quickly if implemented like this. Something like this shouldn't really cost something, especially if you can do just fine without it.
