I read the interview and this particularly made me feel like the blog is mostly inaccurate
" The article does appear to have insider knowledge. It says that Crytek is moving office, in fact it says to one with seventy fewer seats.

answer: I mean, exactly, that’s absolute bullshit. The new Frankfurt office is larger and has more desks than the old Frankfurt office."

well reading through the article i felt like the blog is probably either fake or from some bitter ex-employee making stuff up..

But when i read things like "But we had not enforced weekend work – during crunch people were given the choice to work one weekend day, but only if they chose to."

i'm calling BS.. there is no choice for someone who is working on this project for 2 or more years.. They know that, that choice is quickly transformed into a guilt trip for anybody who "chooses" to not work on weekends leading to this person either starting to work on weekends against his wish or be fired from the next project.

Crunch time, though understandable for the business side of things, is often times just a code word for exploiting employee's to work like modern time slaves

@dakun Crunch time is never understandable as it doesn't serve any function. The amount of errors employees make by the longer hours in Crunch time are so horrendous that you will require more time to fix them and you aren't any further in your progress when the end comes.

Crunch time is just some manager trying to A. Either get a Bonus (Look what I did I made them work a lot more for the same money) or B. Trying to hide his errors in time-management by putting the blame or the pressure on the Employees. (If they fail it is their fault they didn't work enough, and if it doesn't fail his "genius" still made the deadline).

Does that mean Deus Ex: Human Revolution was sponsored in part by the government?

If so, BEST. SPENDING. EVER.

It sounds a lot like my job. But without the game tapes.

And it's great to see you pop up here, Arthur.

I love Tumblr, but I stopped using it after my account got hacked. Tumblr simply blocked access to my account without any notice, and when I finally called and got my account back I was following something like 2500 extra pages I was not following at the time I lost access.

So yeah, take it with a grain of salt. Tumblr is easy to abuse.

In short, the twist is that the entire game industry is run by barbarian methods of abuse.

Everyone, come on out and say it.

...there is going to be a Zoolander 2?

So let's see how many movies are expected to screw up all the movies I love in the next two years:
The Thing prequel
Alien prequel
Blade Runner sequel
and now Zoolander sequel?

GODDAMMIT.

Nooooo. The Alien prequels (there's two from what I understand) are going to be amazing. One is being helmed by Ridley Scott, and that man knows how to do Aliens.

This is really getting annoying, why is everyone in the gaming industry crying about their working environments? I mean really, they pretty much have dream jobs, they probably had to work overtime a few weeks during crunch time, that's NORMAL in the industry. If you don't like it, go work a minimum wage job, see if you prefer that instead.

@trinica What's annoying is that people don't think video game devs don't deserve their rights just because they're working a "dream job."

That doesn't give douchey bosses the right to treat their employees like shit.

The thing is, these complaints are probably very much exaggerated. Besides, you can quit a job any time you want.....I'm pretty sure you're not FORCED to keep working there. I think if these allegations had any truth to them we'd see more people quitting their jobs and working somewhere else.

How ignorant can you be in one post, honestly?

1) Game development is far from a dream job. People outside the industry glorify it, but there are only like 3 developers that make it really good for employees, Valve, Insomniac, and Naughty Dog.
2) A few "weeks?" Try months. Crunch time in any other industry usually takes no more than a month. In the games industry is 6 months to a year at times.
3) Sure you can claim to be able to "quit any time you like," but if game development is what your degree is in, it's not so easy. Jobs are hard to come by, and if you've already spent 4-10 years of your life getting into the industry, you aren't about to jump back out to start up another path. You didn't spend 4 years in school to work at a Burger King.

You can be as high and mighty as you want, but the games industry has countless people trying to get in, unlike many other professions where they simply aren't enough people. If you're a lawyer, doctor, or mechanic, you can leave if you don't like your employer, and find someone else. Changing game dev houses is almost unheard of except by more notorious members.

@trinica It's only a dream job if you're a nerd that's had pretty much zero exposure to corporate environments. Or the workforce in general.

All of these.

It is a dream concept more than dream job. The reality is that a large percentage of the people in the industry are stuck working on shovelware/licesned IP/treadmill sequels and are forced to work well beyond the hours their paychecks are based off on.

I have worked on mods and whatnot. However I wouldn't want to be a game developer because most likely, you will end up working on shitty game after shitty game. And basically worked to death while it is happening, all the while your studio will be at risk of closing up at any time leaving you holding nothing.
