Dragon Quest X is an online RPG, still for Wii [update: also Wii U!]

So, not only is the Wii getting one more huge game -- it's getting a huge online game. Series creator Yuji Horii introduced the first trailer for Dragon Quest X tonight at a reveal event, which culminated in a logo for "Dragon Quest X Online." Horii called it an "online RPG," which could refer either to an MMO-style game or a game in which a few players join up into small parties.

The trailer showed a convincingly cel-shaded game with a look similar to Dragon Quest VIII, with characters identified only by classes, including ogres, elves, and dwarves. A party consisting of multiple classes is shown running on a world map, and many of the series' familiar monsters, including various Slimes, are shown.

While Level-5 was responsible for the development of Dragon Quests VIII and IX, only Square Enix was named this time. We'll have more details following the conclusion of the event.

Update: A version is also being developed for Wii U. This release will have improved graphics, and will be playable cross-platform with the Wii release. In addition to this, the team is considering 3DS compatibility in the form of character transfers. Save your character to your 3DS to trade with others, basically.

So this is going to be a lot like White Knight Chronicles, but with Dragon Ball characters.

Its Dragon Quest, Im sure it will sell hundreds of thousands in Japan alone. Its loved in Japan more then final fantasy, if I recall right.

@alzeer DQ 1 - 3 are part of the same story arc as well as 4 - 6 (although more loosely). Wouldn't say they're necessarily sequels but complete standalone is a little too strong I think for this case (especially if comparing to Final Fantasy).

That's not entirely true. Dragon Quest II was a sequel to Dragon Quest I and Dragon Quest III was a prequel to Dragon Quest I.

In addition, Dragon Quest Monsters on Gameboy was a prequel to Dragon Quest VI.

So it would be more appropriate to say that the majority of Dragon Quest games are standalone.

this saddens me, I was overly excited.. but I dont buy or play online games to franchises that were previously single player and awesome.

Try millions in Japan alone.

An internally developed MMO by Square would be a horrible thing...add that to the fact the Wii is probably the least friendly console to play online with. It almost asking for a disaster.

I do have to question why developing it for the Wii though. By the time this game is released, the WiiU will probably have been released. This would have made an excellent launch title.

Dragon Quest has always (I repeat: ALWAYS) been developed for the most popular console. DQ9 was the only time a portable go the first version of a DQ. With Wii being leaps and bounds ahead of PS3 and 360 hardware sales, it's no surprise.

And, hey, developers don't need to use Friend Codes. They don't need to use Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. Capcom didn't for Monster Hunter 3, after all.

Dragon quest- after loving #7, can officially kiss my a**.

Would never ever buy a Wii just to play this. And with the customer base in the US, this again shows why the Japanese companies are driving themselves out of the game business. What a waste.

#1: SquareEnix doesn't care about the US anyways when it comes to these games; they'll sell millions upon millions in Japan alone.

#2: Speaking of millions, Wii's sold 30 million more systems than both PS3 and 360, and Squeenix always brings DQ to the most popular system.

Why the Wii? Make it for PS3 for god's sake, especially if it has an online focus.

So when is this coming out in Japan? 2012, I would assume? So I'm supposed to believe this will come to the Wii in 2013? I'm sorry, but I don't. We aren't getting this game unless it gets ported to the WiiU or PS3. Make it happen Yuji!

@RickGhastly It's made by Square, so Reggie doesn't get any say in it. If they want to release it here, they can. The question is, why would they want to in 2013? No reason I can think of. We aren't getting this.

Yes, but if you don't remember: Square didn't even acknowledge IX and Nintendo had to finally come through on the localization (as they have with pretty much everything DQ related since). So, unfortunately it's probably in Nintendo's court this time around. And yes, that date is pretty damned unfortunate.

However, the game itself? Despite the piss-poor circumstances for western gamers? Looks obscenely great. I'd have a kid and SELL IT just to play this.

Hoping for the best. The words "Wii" being related to the word "online" forces me to raise a cautiously-curious eyebrow, followed by squinting, and slow nodding, and at last a slight "Hmm"...

@Shadowbender I could see your concerns if it was using Nintendo WFC. But they're going the monster Hunter Tri route and hosting their own servers for the game.

Square Enix just shot themselves in the foot. Not only are they putting it on a platform that has a horrible online infrastructure, but they are also putting it on a console that has decreased in value significantly for the last 3-4 months. If it wasn't for Deus Ex: Human Revelations, they would be in some serious trouble right now with the absence of any news of FF Versus XIII

@Kyouya Um..Wii has the best sales for console this generation so they haven't shot themselves in the foot. 3-4 months doesn't really mean anything when you take all the sales they've made in the past 3-4 years.
