PSA: Steam Trading leaves beta, now official
35
Valve has announced that its Steam Trading beta program has ended and that the service is now available to all Steam users. Steam Trading allows users to trade in-game items with one another. At the moment, the only games to support the new service are Team Fortress 2, Portal 2 and Spiral Knights. Valve notes, however, that it is "working with other developers to incorporate Trading and Inventories into their games, so keep an eye out for future announcements in the coming months."
Perhaps more interesting than the ability to trade in-game items, however, is the ability to trade Steam gifts. Any game that was purchased as a gift (or as an extra copy as part of a bundle) can be traded for items or other Steam gifts. Naturally, there are some restrictions, most notably that any such game must never have been played. Once a Steam gift has been opened, it can no longer be traded.
As part of the service, all Steam users now have an inventory that can be viewed by other users (so long as your profile is public). Check out the full Steam Trading FAQ here.

Okay, now give us actual control over our purchases and let us trade games in general.
Astounding that digital distribution is the future, but we can't even trade our games. If I don't want a game anymore, why can't I give, or at the very least trade, it away? I can do it with *everything else I own*.

Valve already said they want to do that. However, publishers and developers are against the idea.
They would lose a sale from someone if that someone wants the game (and has the desire and will of buying the game). Because, that someone could easily ask someone else around who will trade a copy (a publisher and/or developer already got a share from).

@xiLeShadow Publishers can eat a bowl of dicks, we can do it with everything else we own (including physical versions of their damn games). And that's our right. If they don't want people trading their games or trading in their games, they need to start making games that nobody wants to trade in.

@FuzzyPierce That's..........actually a pretty decent idea. Sure it could use some finer tuning, but it seems kinda cool. Unfortunately I can see people trying to abuse the hell out of that system.

If people could just trade their games, then people wouldn't need to buy them. Part of the reason that DD games get marked down so heavily is because there is no appreciable secondary market and very little cost to the seller. They have no incentive to let you.

@Heck Guy THE SAME WAY EVERY OTHER INDUSTRY DOES.
THE SAME WAY THEY CURRENTLY DO WITH PHYSICAL COPIES.
What is with this "The industry will EXPLODE into a violent fireball of DEATH if people are allowed to treat their property as their property" mindset?

Hey Rere...
The digital data is not yours. The digital data is licensed to you and solely you, for the purpose of non-commercial usage.
The only thing you truly own, is the DVD disc, the data (which I'll remind again, is not yours) is imprinted onto.
Digital Downloads DON'T USE Discs. As such, NOTHING IS YOURS!

@FuzzyPierce Hey, I think it'd be rad if we could do that, but I don't think it'd be rad if the devs couldn't make games anymore because one dude is circulating one copy of "Time Traveling Pirate Mayhem X: Return of Captain Kill" to his entire forum.
Especially in the current state with the economy and pirating and what not. The only reason anyone would buy a copy of the game at that point is to play multi-player with their friends.

@Heck Guy Good argument. FANTASTIC argument. I must've forgotten about the entire game industry dying because everyone shares the same copy of each game.

You're wrong. It's not your "right" because you agreed to the Steam Subscriber Agreement every time you downloaded a game and that agreement states:
"Valve hereby grants, and you accept, a limited, terminable, non-exclusive license and right to use the Software for your personal use in accordance with this Agreement and the Subscription Terms. The Software is licensed, not sold. Your license confers no title or ownership in the Software."
Tough shit.

Any game that was purchased as a gift (or as an extra copy as part of a bundle).
This is good. How many times have you bought a bundle of games, but you already had like 2 -3 of them. They went to no-use (unless it said you could gift it).
Now you can trade those to other people. =D

@xiLeShadow Would be nice...except in most cases, you don't GET the extra game. At all. Like, it's not even an option. This likely won't change that at all. If you buy X bundle and already have one of the games, you don't get it. With the ability to trade extras? They sure as hell still aren't gonna give it to you. Valve doesn't seem too keen on the concept at all.

I think the bundles they were referring to are the multipacks of one game, not the bundles of different games.

The Gift feature as a whole is already a magnificent idea in the first place. It just is.

I seriously wish the prices of hats and such weren't so absurdly high. $12 for the made man? Spy is my main class and I can't even make him look classy.
Valve soils my reputation of being a gentlemen assassin; most people don't even notice my fancy fedora :( .

It has one major, pain in the ass flaw. If you trade TF2 items out-of-game, it does not keep the order you have items in your backpack, and it does not show you the quality of the items.
Want to trade your regular (whatever) for someone else's (whatever), but you have two regular (whatevers), and one Vintage? Good luck. You have a 1 in 3 chance of trading your Vintage one away without knowing it.
It literally does not distinguish the items at all from the other ones. It simply shows the name and the description. No "Vintage", no "Genuine", no item level, just the name in the normal color.

Because YOU DON'T OWN THE GAME. You own the discount, that the game is on. When you download a game, you "own" the product key that allows you to play it. You can't just make up a product key to sell. That's why. I don't get why you're so butthurt about this anyways. If you want to be able to trade games, just buy physical copies

Congratulations! You have officially invented the concept of trading! Absolutely nobody, especially those sods in ancient times using their "barter system", has ever thought of that before!

Makes total sense for Valve to do this. I just hope I don't get a lot of hitchhiker spammers who bug me about trading certain things.

If someone gifts you a game, of course you're going to play it. What else are you gonna do? Stare at it?
