The demo was disappointing but the game is amazing. I find that weird but whatever. I'm glad I decided to go against my judgement and buy it.

I hated the Uncharted Demo! But Love the Game! Sometimes Demo's don't do a game justice!

My friend was exactly the same way. He told me to preorder, like, right as soon as he finished it. I'll have to check it out after I get my fill of AoE online.

I don't really think it's going to sell...probably going to be a bargain bin game...no promos for it...

@psnNukdollars Can't really see why you were downvoted here. I agree, this game is likely to not be a massive retail hit, it has kind of just come out of nowhere. I remember hearing about it earlier this year, and thats it. Now BOOM its here. Zero promos or anything.

Having said that, by the looks of things, it deserves to sell very well. Good games deserve the sales (Shadows of the Damned and Child of Eden are 2 other that deserve loads of sales)

But if it goes ahead and turns into a retail hit, i will be pleasantly surprised :)

@sammo21 The novel Starship Troopers was published in 1959 and featured soldiers in power armor, armed with high-tech weaponry. The movie was substantially different, due to a combination of budget constraints and the selection of an insane Dutchman as director.

And yes, I created a Joystiq account for the purpose of posting this. Poor Heinlein.

I would not be at all surprised if the original writers on Warhammer 40K were influenced by Heinlein's "Starship Troopers." Beyond the armor, there are also the themes that seem to run parallel between 40K and Troopers. The militarism, unswerving loyalty, love of war/conflict, sacrifice, etc.

Warhammer 40k table top game which these Space Marines look identical to released in 1987... The first video game (Space Hulk: Gene Stealers) released for the NES and Saga Genisis in 1996. Starship Troopers released in 1996 but still a full 10 years after the 40k table top game.... that's like saying Batman copied Big Daddy from Kick@ss.

Learn to google .. 40k owns Starship bloopers any day.

@bagntag *I* need to "learn to google"? Starship Troopers (the novel, not the movie) came out in 1959. This comes a little bit before 1987.

Still a little miffed that the RPG elements are almost non-existent and the co-op was reduced to a downloadable add-on that's separate from the main campaign, but I loved the demo and Relic has never steered me wrong. Was picking it up this weekend anyways, but now I just can't wait to play it!

well, at least the co-op is going to be free. something tells me that other companies out there would try to pass if off as just another $10 (or maybe even $15) "micro-transaction".

RPG elements? There really shouldn't be any. The tabletop game is based on numbers and stats but its not like your characters "level up"

As far as the game goes I Beat the game yesterday. I was expecting it to be a little stale/repetitive, while I love THQ's warhammer games they tend to get as such. But they managed to overtake that expectation, was interesting pretty much the whole way through. The story was solid and the multiplayer was fun, unlocking, leveling up, etc. If they get some DLC with other mini stories I would be a buy, otherwise I was content with just getting it as a pre-release rental :)

@gundamxzero Did you beat it on normal? Is the hard mode challenging enough to make the single player experience last?

I'm about an hour in and so far my experience mirrors this review. Seriously fun combat, cool characters, pretty graphics, and I haven't touched multiplayer. It feels faster than gears, but that might be the difference in playing this on PC (as I am) vs Gears on Xbox.

Doesn't matter to me, loving the game so far and happy to see it get a good review here.

I sincerely hope this game stays consistent under all of the games with mainstream name recognition it has to compete with. Just in September you have Skyrim and Gears 3! October is Halo anniversary! Deus Ex is already out!

I hope it does well, I really do, then maybe we can get a game about some Space Marines that aren't prancing smurfs.

FOR DORN!

This game deserves to sell more than Gears of War, but won't. There's nothing wrong with a Gears clone (especially one that pre-dates Gears by 20 or so years) provided that it's good. See Quantum Theory for how NOT to do it.

Like I said, does Joystiq want to see people broke?

@andrewpoe Gears clone? The main thing Gears is known for (apart from manly manly bromance) is the cover system. This game has none.

Being one of the weirdos that loved Too Human, this game is exactly what I've been wanting for a long time. Its fantastic. Not as crazy as Too Human, but you get to hack up hordes of enemies with crazy-awesome melee weapons.

Multiplayer is also extremely balanced (halfway between 7 and 8 right now playing Annihilation mostly). The maps don't necessarily favor one particular strategy (there aren't "camper" maps versus run-and-gun, etc. etc.), and each class has its strong points and counter weaknesses. I've handed people their asses and had my ass handed to me just as many times by all combinations of classes/weapons.

Great game. Really glad I chose this over Dead Island.

@ronincse forgot to add that I really REALLY wish they had used a faction other than Ultramarines, they are just SOOOO boring. I understand that Gamesworkshop seems to like to use them to introduce space marines to new people but still.

I always got the feeling, even when I started playing many years ago, that the Ultramarines were Gamesworkshop's favorites. They're over everything, and the Codex Astartes most of the Space Marines follow was designed by the Primarch of the Ultramarines, further cementing their role as "the" Space Marines. Me? I'm a rebel, and I've always been a fan of the Dark Angels :)

meh, i kind of agree, but at least they're switching it up some and not just using one chapter for every game. for the Dawn of War games we got to play as the Blood Ravens, and for the lackluster Kill Team you can pick whichever chapter you'd like. in fact, the last game that made us play as the Ultramarines was Chaos Gate, if i'm not mistaken.

Space Marines in general are just awesome. in the Uriel Ventris books (Nightbringer and Warriors of Ultramar), even the Ultramarines are badass. if i had to pick one chapter to rule them all, i think the Dark Angels are probably my favorite.
