Batman: Arkham City aims to add replay value with 'New Game Plus' mode
48
It's a story we've all heard a million times: you play Game X; you love Game X; you find every single item and do everything you possibly can, yet still you crave more. Tough, there isn't anything left in Game X. You guzzled Game X when you should've sipped Game X, long and slow, savoring every second.
It was our problem with Batman: Arkham Asylum, much as we imagine it was a problem for a lot of you. Rocksteady is looking to fix that in Batman: Arkham City with a "New Game Plus" mode, which ramps up the difficulty and modifies a few things for your second go around Crimeburg. Thugs are meaner, boss fights are tougher and Bats will retain all of his XP and gadgets from the first playthrough.
The difficulty setting for "New Game Plus" isn't customizable -- whether you make it through on normal or hard, the difficulty of "New Game Plus" will be the same. Also, there won't be any counter icons on thugs, but we imagine that won't be a huge deal after you've spent a whole game punching them in the face.

I could only play through Arkham Asylum on hard mode because the counter icons and weak enemies made it much too easy. This new game plus so far sounds like the hard difficulty setting with all your XP and gadgets from the first play through.
I hope that's not all.

So it's like restarting the game on a harder difficulty but make it piss easy by allowing you to be maxed out from the start? I know you could just do a regular new game but still.
Also I already thought they were extending the replayability for the game with the DLC episodes?

@mcnichoj Alternate endings are the best possible use of New Game +. I mean legitimate alternate endings though, not a slightly different cutscene depending on your difficulty.

Was there ever any explanation given as to why the thugs in the first game were all built like pro wrestlers?

@afrosheen Clearly Joker only hires a certain type of goon...

Ooo I do love me some New Game+ modes. I also loved Arkham Asylum so this should be a lot of fun. Hopefully it's not just harder enemies and you keep your equipment. I'd like to see something unique done with this.

@Ospov I'd love to see a new game + that gives you more fun and unlocks everything. One thing I think developers are stingy on is keeping game balance AFTER you have already finished it. Once the game is played as the developer intended, what is wrong with providing a unique experience by giving new unbalanced powers to take on the suped up bad guys.
Play the game as Killer Croc or Bane to smash through walls or something. Give Batman the Joker's toys as well. Play as Harley Quinn instead of Catwoman with some different abilities.
Sure it doesn't fit with the story, but we've already played that with Bats. Lets just have some fun with it.

Every game needs new game plus mode. And a fast forward and slow mo button ala Chrono Cross.

Will there be anything besides that? New bosses? Alternate ending, maybe?
Maybe it's just me, but I don't see too much replay value with just cranking up the difficulty. If I want to play the game in hard mode, I'll hold the controller upside-down.
Either way, can't wait for this game.

I used to play Tetris upside down as a sort of party trick. Of course, playing Tetris upside down is actually incredibly simple, but -they don't know that-.

Ahhh ... It's like discovering there's a Second Quest after completing the game in the original Legend of Zelda. More games should do this.

I know what you mean. After beating that last challenge room, I didn't even feel like wanting to look at the game for a long time!
Seriously, that game had a LOT of content after beating the main story. Playing as the Joker was really fun, and not just a toss-off mode.
My biggest wish for the next game is co-op challenge rooms!

I thought the fact that you could freely explore the asylum after finishing the game in the original is sort of a "plus" mode. Also, I don't necessarily agree that a new game plus mode just means ramped up difficulty. I rather see things like the "new game plus" mode in Chrono Trigger. You retained XP and items, and you can easily defeat anything, but that's not why you do the plus mode. You do it to get the variety of endings. That feels more like a "plus" mode, not just repeating the same exact game with harder difficulty.

Wish more games would do something along these lines. Although I love the increased difficulty idea. I remember Chrono Trigger and trying to go for the endings and being bored because I could slaughter everything in almost one hit (those accessories that made you auto beserk were nice for that).
I've been hoping that companies would expound on the new game + idea though... can only think of a couple games that have ever really tried to evolve the idea since chrono trigger, and that mainly being breath of fire v. Would love to see the game force you to take alternate paths, or give slightly different stories... oh well, extra replayability is always a nice thing.

is that play through actually "hard mode" or are we talking three different difficulties here? normal, hard, and plus?
Posted: Sep 7th 2011 3:58AM The Blank Mage Returns said
Hang on, how can you do a new game+ ...with all the gadgets? Wouldn't that make the whole Metroid-like map progression completely pointless? Maybe I'm remembering incorrectly, but wasn't a large part of Arkham Asylum using new tools to reach new areas?
Posted: Sep 7th 2011 4:18AM platinumrug said
I don't understand why more games that don't really focus on replay value do this more often. It'd keep us gamers coming back to the game more and more. Or at least add more DLC to the game.

muy buena idea. replay value.

It's not just harder, they have remixed enemy positions.
Posted: Sep 7th 2011 7:24AM (Unverified) said
this should be standard for any game with a story mode, but if they really wanted to sweeten the deal the should add new unlockables on plus mode, say maybe use others character's gadgets, or move sets, or maybe have regular enemies be all mid level boss type difficult.

Remixed enemy positions sounds great! Though, I'm sure the game will be very replayable even without NG+... Arkham Asylum sure was :)

Cannot wait for this game. I'm glad they are putting in this feature and with more games had it too. I just finished my fourth playthrough of Arkham Asylum and it was just as good as the first.

I hope the new game plus is similar to Demons souls. The difficulty raises each time and certain factors affect each play through. I played through

the more they can do for this game the better. i, myself think deus ex HR is an amazing game, GOTY for sure (for me).. arkham city is the only thing that could possible be better. uncharted, skyrim, (and maybe cursed crusade for its solid co-op and a $40 price tag) may also suprise me, but doubtful.
good luck to you caped crusader!

This will be interesting, if you have all the gadgets then doesn't this mean you can either do the game in a different order, or at least get to areas much earlier. As in, straight away lol

Remember how in Grand Theft Auto 4 when you played a mission and there were "conversations" between Nico (Niko?) and whoever else... but if you failed the mission and had to replay it - the conversations were essentially the same - but slightly modified. The developers had a stroke of genius and decided to add this just to make replaying missions a touch less boring/frustrating. THIS is what games need to start doing - adding a little more content, so when you replay a game, conversations are slightly different, objectives are slightly different... etc.
You don't need to give us a brand new game, just change things enough that we notice. Heck, let's change some costumes too - not just the main character, but every character. If the environment has posters or pictures - change them.
You can take some of the "realism" out and add some fun little changes just for the gamers.

Yeah, when this was announced (weeks ago), they also said guard patrols and enemy encounters will be radically different in NG+ compared to the first time through. Love when a game does that.
