Good review, got D3 on launch day but I'll have to wait to pick this up with all the games coming out this month.

Disgaea 4 is one of the best in the series - the crisp HD visuals are insanely well done, and it's just plain fun.

Seems okay, but I recommend my Disgaeas like I do my Dynasty Warriors. Everyone who likes JRPGs should play at least one, but there isn't much purpose to buying every iteration.

The new artwork is nice, but the review doesn't seem to indicate there is much to bring me back to spend another 100 hours on Disgaea.

@Lerkero That's a foolish saying. DW games have very little changes inbetween while there's at least different story, comedy, ect in most jrpgs, or rpgs in general. That's like me saying if you played one FPS you played them all. While mostly true, it's still not. There's a big difference between halo and CoD, and crysis, and Bf. Disgaea improved sooo much between 3 and 4 in ways other than graphics but you'd have to play it really know.

You extrapolated a little too far. While I wouldn't recommend playing every iteration of Disgaea, the other SRPG offerings from NIS and other Japanese SRPG developers have enough different that I would recommend them. Makai Kingdom, Phantom Brave, Soul Nomad, FF Tactics, etc.

I would never say "if you played Call of Duty, you played Halo" but I would say "If you played Modern Warfare 1 (for single player), you probly played Modern Warfare 2." Of course, for shooters that criticism is based mostly on story and presentation while for JSRPGs its about gameplay and mechanics. Disgaea games tried to change the mechanics some, but not enough for me to play through them all.

So few games out there understand that OCD itch and strive for perfection that a select bunch of us gamers desire so pretty much all Nippon Ichi games are day 1 purchases for me.

The last sentence says it all. I fall in love with Disgaea all over again each time I play. I love that they didn't change the game, they just added a little here and there without alienating the fans. They did this right and I'll be hooked for a long time. Best cast since Laharl and Co. too!

4 is such an improvement over 3.

I love how they learn from other games they create and use that to update Disgaea. The "classroom" part from 3 is gone and now it uses a Soul Nomad/ZHP style that gives your characters battlefield abilities that makes it much easier to understand which boosts they are receiving and having them stay in areas where buildings overlap gives them double boosts, which you couldn't do in games past.

Also adds a slight RTS element to the game (well more like Risk than anything).

Also Valvatorez and Fuka blow Mao and Raspberrl out of the water as main characters.

I love the disgaea games, but I'll probably wait to pick this up until it comes out for the psp vita. I know that sounds a bit ridiculous (waiting for an unannounced game on a system that isn't even out yet), but you know it will eventually come out for it, and when it does it will have more bonus features, etc.

I love disgaea, but I never feel the a rush to go out and buy the new one because I can almost always go back to an old one and put more time in, hah.

I also left out that I'm currently in london, so I don't have a ps3 here, but, "Disgaea, Disgaea 2, Disgaea DS, Disgaea 2: Dark hero days, Disgaea 3, and Disgaea 4. "

I have bought Disgaea ds, Disgaea 2, Disgaea 2:dark hero days, and Disgaea 3.

The thing I have to give NIS is that when you buy one of their games you know EXACTLY what to expect. Their established IPs are for the most part similar. Disgaea plays like disgaea, What Have I Done to Deserve This My Lord? plays like What Have I Done to Deserve This My Lord? If they are looking to reinvent something they tend to create a new title, instead of messing up a tried and true formula.

Such an improvement over D3! My only regret is that I didn't pre-order it directly from the NISA website. They shipped the high end editions out a couple days early and I had to watch people on my friends list play it all weekend.

I've always wanted Laharl from D1 to return, but I think Valvatorez will give him a run for my favorite main in a Disgaea game.

I've got my copy of D4 sitting at home right now (delivered yesterday, but I was out of town for the weekend and didn't get back until late last night.) I've been meaning to finish the main storyline of D3 before playing this one though, so it might be a while before I get to it.

Do you Joystiqer's think this would be a good buy for someone who's really into tactical RPG's but hasn't purchased a Disgaea game before and isn't really into anime? I know this probably seems counter-intuitive in a way, but I do love me a good tactical RPG like FFTA or Advance Wars, and this looks like it could hit the spot. Generally I hate all the wacky anime stuff too, but this doesn't seem to take itself seriously at all, and seems almost like a parody, so I might be able to stomache it, if not enjoy it.

What do you think, should I purchase this, or am I little too late?

@MW49350 Seems as though you should pick up D3 to see how you fair. So long as you don't mind shabbier visuals it sounds as though that'd be a good way for you to get a taste of Disgaea, without jumping into the most complex game of the series. I'd also imagine D3 could be found rather cheap nowadays

@MW49350
I would recommend you try Disgaea 3
http://www.amazon.com/Disgaea-3-Absence-Justice-Playstation/dp/B001C4C4KW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1315428215&sr=8-1

Although you say you hate all those things, it wouldn't hurt to try a game like Disgaea at least once.

Look at some gameplay videos and see if you think you would like the pacing and goofiness of some of the attacks. There are some crazy attacks that you probably won't see until you reach levels in the 40's, but they are fun to watch.

The problem with Disgaea is that there is so much nuance to getting good characters that you can spend dozens of hours just leveling characters so that you can combine and customize them. FF Tactics has some of those issues as well, but Disgaea takes it to another level (sometimes level 150 and above, and yes, pun intended).

Give Disgaea 3 a try and if you like it you may be able to catch Disgaea 4 on sale somewhere.

@Lerkero Thanks for the advice guys.

I think I'm going to go pick DS4 up right now, actually. Even though I'm not use to playing these kind of games, after reading a few reviews, watching the gameplay trailers, and being told endless times to play the DS series by my brother, I figure its worth a shot. Normally I'd pick up DS3 first and see if I liked it, but frankly it looks to be an inferior game, so I'd rather start with the best of the best. Worst case scenario is I spend $50 and hate it, but you know what? Why not. It's just money afterall. I'll try branching out. You never know, I might end up loving it to death.

@Tridus Mao, like Laharl, is a character that changes over the course of the story, though. Adell, meh. He never changes. Rozalin does, kinda, but she goes from super-annoying to sorta-annoying. An improvement like changing from a hot poker in the eye to a paper cut.

I'd say Disgaea 2 PSP is probably a good starting point. I've found D3 to be difficult to approach even after playing the first two (then again, you can either pick it up now for relatively cheap, or wait for the PSVita rerelease with all the DLC included.) For the first playthrough in D2 I'd recommend not getting any DLC characters though until after finishing the main storyline; Plenair and Sapphire (the two free ones) can be pretty serious game-breakers.

Actually D4 is a great starting point, granted you'll miss some jokes and whatnot, but it overall "Friendly" to the newcomer, and by friendly, i mean 'disgea friendly'

Regarding prices, NISA games hardly hardly go on sale, since they do not release tons of em, they actually go up in price, disgaea tho, might be the exception, is by far the most popular game that NISA localizes
