The North American box art for the ICO and Shadow of the Colossus Collection is ... not super great. We're no graphic designers or anything, but we do prefer our game cases to be a tad less hideous than that. Fortunately, the flipside of that cover plays host to a much more appealing vision: A stylish representation of the Japanese and European cover for ICO, and a slightly modified version of the European version of Shadow of the Colossus -- neither of which are obstructed by gaudy frames or signage.
We hope the inclusion of this good-looking cover is enough to fill you with goodwill towards Team ICO, because this next part certainly won't: PlayStation Blog has revealed that The Last Guardian won't appear at the Tokyo Game Show. The blog explains, "we can assure you that Ueda-san and the rest of the development team are hard at work to bring his lofty vision to life and deliver the very best gaming experience possible." We just hope they can do so before the heat death of the universe.

@kentuckyfried, you're wrong, I don't care about it either. In fact, I intend to buy this as a download. I suppose you're still collecting LP covers as well.

Thanks for righting the ship, man. I know that, just to appease you, Joystiq is NEVER going to post a thing about boxart again! Never!

I really do not care about the boxart, I'm just excited to get these 2 amazing games in HD! And for $40 too, great value. Can't wait. :D

Oh, they decided to keep the classic-yet-horrible ICO box art? I don't get it. I painted a new version of the ICO cover using only midget poop and the face of Dick Cheney, and it looked better. Great game deserves better cover art.

I guess if you like artsy crap, it's good, but to each his own. (I like it if anyone's wondering)

I think the art may have its own stand-alone appeal, but it does a lousy job of representing ICO. For example, look at the cover of Shadow of the Colossus. One glance and you're thinking "Holy crap, is that little guy on a horse about to fight that huge stone thing?" You immediately grasp the epic awesomeness contained therein.
Then look back at the cover of ICO. What jumps into your head? "Are those two shapes in the center of that unadorned cement-scape meant to be tiny people? It think one might have a sword, although I don't see any enemies he could use it on. Maybe he could have fun climbing that ladder. Oh wait, that ladder goes nowhere. Huh. Maybe the game has something to do that windmill, since it's the biggest thing in the picture."
In short, the cover for ICO doesn't do a good job of representing the game contained inside. If you're a developer, this is generally a bad idea. When a casual customer wanders into GameStop, you want them drawn in by the cover. And if the cover doesn't do a good job of representing the game you're selling, it's a lot less likely to do that.

Actually, I think the ICO cover represents the basic gameplay fairly well. For instance, were I to see this in the store, I'd guess that the game was a platformer type, that it involved escape in some way, and there was a partnership in the escape.
The gameplay is represented in the artwork, but on a more abstract level than blatantly showing the actual game. Plus, this cover would guarantee to get my attention way more in a game store, because of its simpleness, and because of its contrast to the many other covers already on the shelves.

Hrm! This response comforts me. Here I had been assuming other people's reactions were largely similar to me own and that they were more or less shooting themselves in the foot with that cover. Apparently not, which is good. Thanks for responding!

I can't wait to play these, people talk so highly about this game (which quite frankly I think is a bit unwarranted, I'm not saying there's no way they can be good but supposedly every game is terrible compared to this, which is quite a bold statement). Probably going to cancel my Gears 3 pre-order and get this.

If Last Guardian won't be at TGS then it probly won't be released until next summer. at the earliest. Is it going to be released internationally at launch? If not, the English version might not be seen until next Fall.

But aren't these sold individually in Japan? It makes for a nice cover, but it wouldn't make sense to put the game on the shelves like that. Most stores display games with the cover showing, so using that box art you would get the impression that it's just one game.

This is cool, did anyone else notice resistance 3 had an inside cover like this too? All its cool art with no logos.. was nice..
It seems Sony have been starting to do this a lot with their games, maybe they will do it with GoW Origins as well?

I know I'm going against the grain here... but, I'm actually okay with not seeing anything more of The Last Guardian until it has crossed some major mile-markers. All the screens looked great when it was announced, but if we're potentially looking at a 2013 release... don't tease me incessantly throughout the dev cycle.

I actually like the ICO art. It's a little bit obscure, but it references the Italian painter Georgio Di Chirico. He painted brooding architecture dwarfing small isolated figures. He influenced all sorts of master artists mostly involved with the surrealist movement. If I had to pick a game that was absolutely "surreal" it would be ICO. That game is untouchable!!!
Here is a link to see some of his work. To me, it's a direct reference.
