Planetside 2 to be freemium in some form, beta coming late 2011/early 2012
15
How free will Planetside 2 be? So, so free. At least, in some part, according to Sony Online Entertainment prez John Smedley. In two recent interviews, Smedley confirms the long-awaited sequel's business model, saying, "The game will be F2P. What form will it be? We're still working that out." Smedley specifically notes that the team is looking at Riot Games' enormously popular League of Legends as a model, meaning you can pay for visual upgrades, but not for ability upgrades.
Those excited about the upcoming sequel will get a chance to go hands-on in the coming months, as Smedley also promises a beta by the end of 2011 or early 2012. That said, it could be a bit longer, as he also notes that the beta will be "ready when it's ready and we are proud of it."

Tired of freemium, monthly payments, on disc dlc, planned dlc....
How about I give you the money you give me a game... End of transaction

Good old days compared to what? The original Planetside required a monthly subscription and that came out in 2004; way before DLC became standard

who said he was mentioning Planetside 1, to me, he sounded like he missed the old days when games came complete, you didn't have to pay for anything extra to get the most of your games. ie SNES/PS1/PS2/NES/everything that came before xbox360/ps3

So.....you're comparing PC games to platform games, from eras when PC games had expansions and patch downloads.

*in addition:complete games on those consoles? Do consider your limited American perspective. Additional content has existed since the NES days, with the disk drive, or the SNES' Satellaview; etc.

who is comparing? I just mentioned some stuff. Do I need to list everything? Some console games are from PC also and vice versa.
Plus PC games were pretty much complete, till expansions starting coming out. But you're comparing those to DLC for 9.99 that only add maybe a few hours more of gameplay whereas an expansion usually adds tons more and even makes it seem like a sequel? I rather have expansions like Brood wars and Lord of Destruction any day over DLC that's like the prince of persia epilogue.

"till expansions came out"
I bought my first PC game expansion pack almost 20 years ago. Same for a patch/content patch. This is nothign new.....you console gamers are just forever behind the times.

Going by the screenshot, I'm guessing they're planning to make money off "visual" upgrades along the lines of armor skins that don't scream "HAY GUYS IM OVAR HERE LOLZ".

@freaparn That's not a screenshot. It's part of the Planetside 1 box art (from 2004).

Mega Man should've looked like this on the box art.

Acceptable. I wouldn't play if it ways pay to play.

I wouldn't play if there were no sustained income to support several years of ongoing development. If you can't brown-bag it once a month and contribute a few bucks, then you deserve a one-shot game that the developers forget about before its even available to you.
