Perhaps one of the saddest stories this year was the lack of commercial success for Child of Eden. The game was very well received critically -- our own review called it a "momentary masterpiece." And at a Kinect event being held at Ubisoft's San Francisco headquarters today, I once again cornered senior VP of sales and marketing, Tony Key, to talk about Miziguchi's latest.
"Can you tell we like Kinect?" Tony joked at the outset of our interview. "Child of Eden went to retail, it got great reviews," he said, as I steered us back onto the subject at hand, "it's a great product, but we didn't sell as many copies as we hoped, obviously. And that's a shame, because the game is great and deserves recognition. I just think your more mainstream consumer -- a lot of the Kinect people are -- haven't quite figured out what that experience is, so we continue to get great reviews and not a lot of sales at retail, but Microsoft saw that as an opportunity, took it and put it in with Kinect."
But that brings up an interesting question: the copy of Child of Eden included in the limited quantity Kinect bundle is a downloadable version, accessed via a code in the box. Could we see a downloadable version of Child of Eden offered via Xbox Live to all consumers? "Potentially," Tony said. "We don't use that model right now for any of our games -- we sell new retail games. It's not something we have in the plan at the moment, but if that model is coming, I don't see why Child of Eden couldn't fit in there."
As for more Child of Eden games, don't hold your breath. While Tony says Ubisoft is "still holding out hope this game will find its audience," the potential for other games right now is hopeful at best. "We think the renewed interest generated from this new bundle could be a tipping point for Child of Eden to become a bigger brand for us. We would love to have that happen."
Ubisoft has no plans to offer downloadable Child of Eden, holding out hope it'll still catch on

Biggest problem seems to be everyone thinks it's Kinect-only

@timpkmn89 I saw a story while back that the PS3 version was only delayed because of added 3D support and move. And guess because of the delay they decided to add more levels.

i agree. they probably got a nice little stack of cash up-front from microsoft, and a bunch of free, kinect-related advertising- but it was always going to be an uphill battle to sell this game, and a simultaneous release would have gone a long way toward building early momentum instead of announcing the game for both platforms and then oddly changing gears 5 months before release and turning all conversation toward the kinect- and then coyly avoiding direct answers about the PS3 version and Move controls. Ubisoft handled this whole thing wrong. it's fine to make a timed exclusive for one console or the other- but you can't just do that after you've already announced a game as multi-platform and expect the people who were already interested in the game to not notice. now the PS3 version is going to launch at $50 just in time for the holiday video game avalanche. best of luck to Ubisoft...

A stunning game no doubt - but they started at a stupid price point. A $20.00 download from the start would have made this a huge hit with Kinect owners. I wouldn't be surprised if "Hole in the Wall" is doing better. I wish Ubi well with this title... while it's a short trip, it's worth the ride.. just not at $49.95.

You need to drop that price Ubi. Everyone knows it's a 2 hour game. You're not duping us.

So is Pac-Man a 10 minute game, then?
Yes, there are only 6 levels that can be finished pretty quickly. But that is only part of the game. The idea is to get better at playing, and go for high scores on the leaderboards. You don't need a ton of levels in a game like that.

@adeese PacMan cost me 25 cents to try it out in the 80's. And I could play it till I died. This is FIFTY dollars and doesn't have a demo. Do I want this game? absolutely! But I am in no way justifying a 50 dollar price tag to play something as short as The Hangover.

A demo would help. I admit I'm not buying before ive tried it. I know everyones saying its great, but it looks so different I want a better idea of what I'm getting before I slap my money down.

I still need to buy this. Might as well just drop the $40 on it.

This game is a marketing disaster. Are they so arrogant that they think a game like this will sell at $50 in the store because it got good reviews? There isnt even a demo, apparently people are just supposed to know its amazing and worth $25 an hour.

this is a very good game. but it's unrealistic to expect more than a handful of people to rush out and buy a $150 peripheral just so they can play a $50 game. Honestly- there isn't a lot of crossover potential here and there never was. Ubisoft should have seen this coming a mile away. Kinectimals and Dancing games are always going to be the bread and butter for the Kinect and everyone knows it. Ubisoft further hurt themselves when they took the timed-exclusive Microsoft bribe. a game like this always needed the support of word of mouth and when half the fanbase has to wait an additional 5 months to play the game, it hurts momentum. and finally, there's the price. it's an issue. I love Rez and i own the original on PS2 as well as on 360. worth every penny in my opinion, but a game that lasts less than 3 hours is awfully hard to justify when game prices are so high in this economy. old school gamers and die-hard Sega fans aside, this game was a cult hit in the making. in fact- i'd be willing to bet that the $10 XBLA re-release of Rez outsold every other version of Rez on both PS2 and Dreamcast at a ratio of over 2 to 1. in today's economy- they needed to get this game out at a budget price. just look at how quickly the price dropped on Child of Eden. it can be found new on Amazon for under $30, and now Ubisoft thinks they can turn around and sell it on PS3 for $50 in 2 weeks? good luck with that. this game was totally mishandled by the publishers every step of the way, and it's just really sad.

@HaVoK308 - I must ask, have you played it with Kinect?
If you have & just prefer the controller, that's fine but if you haven't, don't knock it until you have because I tried it out both ways & found the Kinect control to be a HUGE improvement over a controller.

i know that it can be played with a regular controller, but it was designed to be played with motion controls. it was also marketed only as a kinect game.

When I first watched a review for the game I wanted to play it immediately and was surprised that I had to order it on a disc :/
They should give more credit to the pot-high consumer segment.

Practically every Kinect game could see sales boosts by going GOD. Even it they didn't really drop the price by much. It's a much more impulse buy inducing peripheral than devs realize. Even though I know it's great & I'll like it, I havn't brought myself to go out & pick up a hard copy and probably wont for some time to come.I could see myself downloading it one day that the family or friends are just hanging out playing Kinect though, just to have something different play spur of the moment...

This game simply costs too much money. I'm personally not buying it until I can get it new for less than $20.
Unfortunately at that price point, it means Ubisoft likely won't see a dime of that $, or it's a copy I found on clearance sale somewhere, etc.
Sorry. I hear it is a lovely game, but I'm not as dedicated to either my kinect or shooters, and $20 is approximately the price point where price vs cost works out for me.

It seems like a hard sell without having a demo. Looking at screens of the game, you can't even tell what the point of the game is. They should have just released it in the arcade and if it was good enough, it would have done just fine.

Got my copy for $10 at Best Buy last weekend. I was a huge fan of REZ and am enjoying Child of Eden. I think REZ was better and I'm glad I only spent $10 on Child of Eden. I agree that it would make an awesome $10-$15 downloadable XBLA title.

@Cuddlefish Me too. At $10 you can't complain. Weapon swap wasn't so smooth sometimes, completely altering the camera angle before the reticule changed. I found putting your hand down as if holstering a gun seems to make the weapon switch happen a lot faster. $50 is just too much for the game.

No, I would say I am a huge fan of REZ considering I bought it 3 times. Imported it for my Dreamcast, bought it on PS2 and then again on XBLA.

I'm very happy that it will come out for the ps3, but I will wait until the price drops since I know that there were good deals for the 360 version not too long after its release.
It is sad because I would like to support this game more, but at least I will buy a new copy at some point.

I'm looking forward to this on PS3, but as it stands they're going to have to wait to get my money.
At 15-20 bucks for a retail or digital copy, this would be a relatively easy sell.
50 bucks? I'll wait for an Amazon price drop.

1.) Drop the price.
2.) Make it available to download
You simply can't expect this generation of pothead gamers to see far enough past MW and Halo to give a care.
