*Sigh* I suppose they'll keep pulling the rug out from under our feet every 6 months. I hope they didn't screw up the controller functionality to favor Kinect. I don't have Kinect, and probably never will.

@c0bra95 only amongst gamers would you have a company continually updating and attempting to improve a service referred to as "pulling the rug out"...

It looks like the controller functionality is already screwed up, just look at the layout of the boxes on the home screen. And why is it all ads? Is that the game launch box in the top left of the home screen all scrunched up? Is this a console or a FacebookBox?

@jsx92

What are you talking about? First off, NXE already has the majority of the menus taken up by ads. Just look at the Spotlight, Video and Music sections. And where do you see something scrunched up in the top left of the screen? You mean top right? Yeah, that's your profile pic, and the EXACT same as the current layout.

The minimal changing of a console's interface is the "rug being pulled out from under you?" Ummm..

What does it look like if you don't have a gold account?

Looks really nice, really nice, but it's gonna be loaded with ads like the current dashboard.

@Master Troll Nope. The big center square is a "new stuff" box that'll scroll through what's currently new in terms of content (movies on Zune, games on XBLA, deals, etc) which will become category specific as you navigate left or right. The two left boxes are category-specific menus/options, and the bottom right box is an advertisement (likely relevant to the current category). Not sure what's up with the top right box, though.

@SkuddStevens "new stuff" is another name for ads. If it's showing you stuff you don't own and would have to pay to get, it's an ad. "New stuff" is an ad.

I wish these companies would have different options for customizing the visibility of certain features in these central hubs.

most of us don't care about half of the stuff that's visible on XBL or the XMB. let us hide it

This looks absolutely horrible. > 50% of the screen is totally empty space.

Metro makes sense in phones where screen real state is limited. This is not the case with an Xbox.

Why would I want this on my 92" projector screen????

Well that screen is without a themed background, so it looks empty. But the idea is everyone has a theme and would probably like to see some of it in the back. Also, this is just one section, I'm sure as you go deeper the tiles fill more of the screen...

just sayin.

@Raffi256 I don't know what this is supposed to mean... I am not a human because I happen to own a TV > 20"???

I don't get the concept. If they want to use Metro look, thats great, but why does it have to be squished into the centre of the screen with all this white space. It's nonsense.

You realize it's a menu to get you to the things that will utilize your screen right? A menu/dashboard doesn't need to occupy your entire display space. Just offer a convenient pretty way to get to the "meat" of what you're trying to use. Do you get mad at games that their menu system is basic? Or their option screen was just an orange screen with a few animated lines... no you don't because that would be dumb.

I'd much rather a simple, well designed, and organized interface that only uses 50% of my screen than have them just jam a ton of crap all over & make it busier then necessary simply to use more of the screens real estate. That's just me though. .

"but why does it have to be squished into the centre of the screen with all this white space. It's nonsense. "

the center is the safe zone or the active area of the screen. you have to keep in mind that we are in a transitional period and there are still people that play on SD tvs with 4:3 aspect ratios. If they put all sort of stuff on the edges of the screen it will get cut off on those screens. they could make two menu's but that's a double the work. and no one want to do double work.

The console knows what aspect ratio it is currently in. Do you really think they couldn't handle resizing the buttons for a 4:3 screen?

@swooded I still think the Wii has the best UI out of the 3. Xbox 360's Dashboard is too cluttered, PS3's XMB is easy to navigate, but it's too empty.

The Wii, with it's stacked TVs look, is extremely simple and easy to navigate. And you can organize the "channels" any way you like.

No, it can't handle it because the people that designed and developed the new dashboard obviously didn't code that into the final release. Sure the hardware is capable but it only does what it's creators program it to do.

as designers they had few options:
-design it to fit the full safe area of an HD monitor and alienate the members of xbl that still have SD tvs

-design it to change, and spend extra hours to accomodate that small number of people still using SD tvs

-or just design it small enough to fit within both sizes and alienate no one

@swooded This may just be me, because my vision is pretty poor, but If I'm sitting at my couch, 10-15' away, I can barely make out the text at the top of the menus, and the only plausible indicator of where I am are the images, the "live tiles"

I scanned through the article but I saw nothing about Skype.

Is Skype support there?

Just wondering because all my brother does on Xbox LIVE is talk to his friends. If it does have proper Skype support, he would switch to PC gaming full time.

It would also be nice for me to talk to some of my Xbox LIVE friends.

You can currently chat, video chat, and text people through Live Messenger.

VideoKinect will even communicate with Live messenger on the PC today.

Skype will only add yet another way to do what you can already do.

Or at least allow you to change it. I don't know about most gamers, but I prefer a dark room, so the transition from a dimly lit screen to BRIGHT WHITE BURNING DEATH is not exactly comforting.

I still miss the original dashboard, but am looking forward to this update. I've played xbox for 8 years and this most recent dashboard makes it annoying to find arcade games and such, at least to me.

Should be an option to toggle between original dash (blades) and this. I'd even pay 400 ms points to have the old dash, it was so awesome, plus most of my themes look better on it.

I'll definately give you that themes looked better. The Metalocalypse theme I bought for the original dash has a giant white "floor space" covering up the bottom half of the Metalocalypse logo. And the alternate imagery that was used is almost never seen. I mean buying those is a waste in general but it was nice when my dash was dark now it's half black half white.
