Skyrim will offer the option to play as a vampire via a communicable disease, just as in previous Elder Scrolls titles, Bethesda game director Todd Howard confirmed to G4. These aren't your little sister's vampires -- being a bloodsucker will completely transform how the game is played, and features progressive vampiric levels, damage taken from sunlight and the ability to feed on unsuspecting, sleeping victims.
No word yet on if sparkles will be a part of the Skyrim vampires' arsenal, but we'll make sure to tell Tiger Beat as soon as we find out.

I don't mind getting pale, having red eyes and becoming more gaunt. But WHY. WHY BETHESDA, DO I HAVE TO BECOME AN OLD MAN TO BE A VAMPIRE?

Vampires vary so much from source to source, they can basically be whatever you want to be, since they are make believe.
I mean, we got the sparkly twighlight vampires, ann rice vampires, anime vampires (ala Blood: The Last Vampire, vampire hunter D style was a bit more of the traditional 'bram stoker' style vampire) 30 days of night, True Blood, the list goes on. While they all share things in common they all have things that set them apart.

@IggyFandango Seems fairly accurate to the Stoker vampire, where the longer Dracula went without feeding the older and paler he looked, though when gaining strength and feeding up on victims he appeared to be much younger and had more of a normal colored face. However, he did keep the iconic hooked nose and mustache.

Looks pretty cool. Hope there's a cure though- romping around the sunny hillsides of Oblivion was one of my favorite pass times in that game- would hate it if I was condemned to night.

My only problem with becoming a vampire -fast travel, mainly due to how frequently you had to feed. Hopefully they make becoming a vampire a little more fun and feel less like a chores.

Maybe vials of blood to go? Have one on you when you fast travel it'll be autoconsumed when needed.

This sounds identical to vampirism in Oblivion.
Basically, it runs on a 3 day timer. As long as you feed every 24 hours, you'll look normal, be able to interact with people and will be able to walk in sunlight/fast travel.
If you go a day without feeding, your stats will get a further boost, but you'll start looking pretty monsterly, so a lot of people will shy away from you. Also, the sun will start doing moderate damage to you, making fast travel impossible.
If you get to the third day without eating, you'll get an even greater stat boost, but you'll look like a gangly beast. People will actively fear you and the sun will burn you up very quickly.
It was always worth it, to me, though. Vampirism gives you a pretty awesome spell that grants night vision and detect-life, which come in handy for the Dark Brotherhood and Thieves Guild quests.

@Chareth Cutestory: That night-eye vampire ability became completely useless once you found a piece of equipment that granted night-vision or detect-life while equipped anyway. In my case, I stumbled across a ring for each.
I honestly hated being a vampire in Oblivion. The stat boosts weren't worth the sun-damage problem as it hindered fast travel during the day and I didn't want to drop what I was doing to find someone to feed on.

I remember being a vampire on Oblivion, I somehow manages to make it to where I could not complete the vampire cure quest. Damage from the sun sucks.

Why won't you give us werewolf Lycanthropy Besthesda?
We got it in Daggerfall and Morrowind with add on Bloodmoon. I mean we are back dealing with a Nordic storyline with Skyrim.
How I see Dragons + Vampires + Werewolves = Awesome. How can you ever lose with that equation.

@Red Runner That would be awesome! Nothing could stand up to a Dragonborn Werewolf Vampire Ninja. It would be the ultimate being.
I'm currently playing Oblivion and I've been a vampire since my third quest. I haven't had any real problems with daylight or fast travel. There is no need to sleep or rest unless you level. So really it's fairly easy to maintain a normal life style if you want. You just have to deal with people asking if you're sick, all the time. 25% equals no damage from sunlight. 50 and higher is where it starts. My character is Vampire Monk. 6x damage+ignore armor+plus vampiric strength=absolute ownage.

Let's just hope it isn't as complete suck to play as anymore. In Oblivion there was no good reason to take Vampirism, the negatives grossly outweight positives. At least it was mildly passable in Morrowind, and Lycanthropy was goddam great in Bloodmoon.

I played a vampire in Oblivion and had no problems. I stayed in the first stage of it and was able to walk around in the sun with nobody attacking me. I just fed whenever I happened to be in the imperial city at night and almost never had any problems.

Same here, though I'd just feed wherever I was.
Sneak class + vampirism = win.
The stat boost is pretty nice, and being able to detect life and see in the dark simultaneously (without having to skill up any magicks) was a total boon in most of my stealthy endeavors.

Haha ohh man vampirism screwed me up in Oblivion. I ended up getting caught feeding on Mages Guild members one too many times. I got kicked out and couldn't finish the main quest.

I got bit by a random vampire in Oblivion within 5 hours of me playing it. I quit playing the game after that, and after discovering the method of curing it. Hopefully this game has some sort of method of preventing people under level 10 to get infected.

You didn't become a vampire right away in Oblivion. You had a few days or so where all you had to do was cast, drink a potion or eat an ingredient for "Cure Disease".
Granted, not knowing that sucked the first time, but I'm guessing it'll be similar in Skyrim. Multiple saves are always a good move too
