Listen up, Cher: With Final Fantasy XIII-2's time travel/plot device the "Historia Crux," you can turn back time, and maybe even find a way, provided you find the right stuff. By locating hidden "Artefacts," Cher can unlock new locations and times for Noel and Serah to visit via the Historia Crux, which serves as the sequel's main vehicle for story progression and world navigation.
As any seasoned time traveller will tell you, changing stuff in the past changes stuff in the future, and because of that XIII-2's overall experience is said to be much less linear and direct than its predecessor. According to director Motomu Toriyama, Square Enix is aiming for a "much more player driven concept," with the "gameplay and story itself" changing around the player's actions. You can also expect to encounter younger (and potentially older) versions of characters from Final Fantasy XIII proper along the way.
This may be Final Fantasy's first and last hoorah in the realm of time travel, however. Toriyama says that each entry in the series receives its own unique gameplay system, and that have no intentions of making time travel key in future installments. Additionally, player-testing has already revealed strong comparisons to Chrono Trigger, and while Toriyama doesn't categorize that information as being especially negative, we doubt Square Enix wants to seem iterative or uninspired.

Yeah, this sounds pretty awesome. Ocarina of Time's "time warping" was awesome; combine that with great graphics, good music, and solid gameplay and you have day one purchase for me.

I am impressed they found the time to to do this sequel but not have Versus XIII out yet and now I hear rumors of a XIII-3 as well. Square I am disappoint.

@bluejuan85 SE just said that production on Versus is now at 100% so we should be good. XIII-2 was only in development for a year and a half.

I have just a slight suspicion that Destati means "another" sequel in the CT series. ;-)
And as much as I'd love to see one some day, I'm doubtful that Square-Enix would do CT (or CC) justice with a new entry. That said, I'm hopeful for FFXIII-2 but I'm not expecting it to be an amazing game.

Even though I lke CC, I'm not one of those who think it was the greatest game of all times. That was CT. Regardless, I don't think CC left much room for yet another sequel; besides, it's been 11 years.
Now come to think about it, SE loves remaking and then remaking the remake, they could have a much-dreamed CT remake for the game 20th anniversary in 4 years. Of course, they'd have to annouce it, like, tomorrow in order to have any chance to have it done by 2015. Additionally, they probably would make yet another unecessary FFIV remake (don't get me wrong, it's probably ma favorite FF) than giving people... it's not even giving us what we want rather than give what we scream and moan about (VS 13, KH 3 for some, the 100% certain hit "FFVII remake"). Oh well...

Chrono Cross only sucked in terms of being a "Sequel" but not as a game. Anyone that thinks it sucks as a game has no taste in Game - design, art, music and fun.
I mean seriously, to say that game sucked just shows ignorance. Sucked as a sequel to Radical Dreamers, er I mean Chrono Trigger, but it was a damn fine game by any other right.
That said, I too would like a true sequel to Chrono Trigger that has a feel and play more like it than trying to reinvent the wheel.

Lastly, I don't know in what world comparisons with Chrono Trigger would be a negative thing..

If I'm not mistaken... aren't they all pretty much linear? I mean sure they aren't all go down this corridor but it isn't like here are five objectives you must complete before going onto the next main quest item. 13 may not have an open world map, but as far as FF games go compared to many comparable RPGs today, they have all been pretty linear

The "exploration" on Gran Pulse is a mere shadow of the exploration you could do in any of the other games as the only open area is the Archelyte Steppes or whatever its called. And even that is just a series of mini boss fights that you basically run around to

Having gone back though and playing most of the FF games, the exploration doesn't really compare to many comparable games. I see your point in that the hallway to hallway aspect leaves absolutely no room for exploration, but a game now a days like Mass Effect, Fallout, or Elder Scrolls has more exploration values than any of the previous FF games (granted they are done today, have a bigger budget and better equipment to make the game)

You're too quick to jump into conclusions without any concrete fact, which is just plain bias. I'll give the game the benefit of the doubt 'till I can see it for myself. Besides, I don't know where you got from this "Historia Crux" (WTF with these latin/pseudo-latin stupid names though?) means the game is linear. We will never have anything like Fallout 3 from a Final Fantasy, but anything would be less linear than XIII. Besides, every FF is linear in comparison to Western RPGs, but if I wanted a Fallout-like game, I'd just play Fallout and not bitch and moan that FF is linear.
I do not condone FFXIII, I mean, it did get boring after a while, but my stubborness payed in spades when I reached Gran Pulse. Even though it the sidequests mostly consisted in hunting, that was amazing due to a well crafted battle system. Now do you see what an opinion looks like?

@Androu1 don't kid yourself, Pulse was just an empty wide area with some animals around. It had no exploration or anything else to do beside beating the crap out of some enemies. No quest for special weapons, armors, summons, additional powers.... Nothing. FFXIII was a one way route from point A to B like a FPS but with a turn based battle system.
All the background story was hidden in the Datalogs and the world was totally unrealized unlike prior FF games where you could get to know and explore the world in which you were playing in. You got to see how people dressed in the different towns, the architecture of the houses, the music that defined the mood of the different towns and other stuff. FFXIII was more about the characters because that was the easiest and fastest way to make the game. Linear as hell and everything carefully planned for you to just move forward. If I wanted to play something like that we already have a gazillion of games that plays just like that, like: Uncharted, GeoW or COD.

I enjoyed the music, even though it was a bit sugary at times. But even though I liked the music they put it in the weirdest of places considering the current situation you were undergoing. Feel lost and confused? Here' let's blow some sunshine up your ass. Just a lot of design issues that made little sense in that entire game. Pacing, mood, quests, etc. That and they recycled a hell of a lot of the music for no particular reason.
That said, I've played much worse games and even though I was bitching during the entire game and after, I still committed 95 hours to the damn thing.
I simply did not enjoy it. (I only finished to justify my complaints and hopes that it would indeed pick up)
My biggest complaint? The combat was stupid. Just plain stupid. Switch to appropriate paradigm and spam attacks. No strategy (outside of setting up the correct paradigm) and no real rewards for your efforts. There was a fine line between using brute force and taking advantage of an enemy's weakness. Most didn't need to be attacked at their weak point as it was just as fast or easier to spam generic attacks. And yes, I did take out most of the marks in the game. Not all but I think there's only like 5 left or so.
That was my biggest problem with the game and there were no diversions to take you away from the terrible system. So, it just amplified the frustration. Then you have the cliched story that was told in the grand scheme of things terribly. They focused on character stories, which is great! Except you're saving someone you have no attachment to and only have two whiney bitches to tell you about her. They also hate each other for typical reasons. Then you have sheman Hope. If you played all the other Final Fantasies and other RPGs from the mid to late 90s, these characters really make you want to scream.
So, if you enjoyed the combat, you most likely enjoyed the game. It seems.

Crisis Core battle system was cool, but the random factor screwed things up a bit. Final Fantasy XIII system on the other hand was hectic and highly strategic (at least in the optional battles) and I love every single aspect of it. FFXIII sure takes it's time to show its strength, but when it does, it erases the boredom you went trought to get there.
So, that's it. I admit it's flaws and regardless of those I really like FFXIII.

Crisis Core? Really? The game that introduced the stellar battle mechanic of leaving things like summoned monsters up to random chance on a literal slot machine? And by "random" I mean it would summon Ifrit or something when you had the last enemy down to 10hp.
