Monster Hunter 4 coming to 3DS [Update: see the trailer!]
88
Nintendo has announced that Capcom is developing Monster Hunter 4 for 3DS. A brief trailer shown during Nintendo's pre-TGS keynote gave us a glimpse at the titular hunter of monsters scaling cliffs and running from a giant dragon, which he eventually faced ... only for the trailer to cut away to the title logo. Sneaky teaser trailer, sis!

Epic Megaton Announcement. Graphically i saw both Tri-G and 4 look almost Wii-quality while running in 3D. Very very impressive.

Really? They looked very dated to me, but it might have just been the stream quality.

the question is, is it exclusive? If it's for both, it will come down to a 'which is better looking' and 'which offers better online' fight.
Which is a good thing.
Which is a good thing.

This gives me another reason to buy a 3DS, but it also greatly disappoints me. I was hoping for maybe a PS3/360 Monster Hunter with tonnes of monsters, weapons and polished graphics. Hell, even a PS Vita announcement. This ruins that hope for another few years.
That said, I'll still buy a 3DS for this and a few other games, it just bums me out that Capcom hates us.

They wouldn't make any vita announcements at a 3ds conference. Anything vita related will come at sony's keynote.

I can't imagine it not coming to Vita. They have been hugely successful on PSP and It's not improbable a big chunk of that audience will migrate to Vita. The thing already has two analog sticks and everything. Normal logic would say MH4 is going to be multiplatform, but who knows, maybe they made a deal with Nintendo. Either way it's a big win for 3DS.

Yeah, I too would like a Vita version, this is possibly the first game to get me remotely interested in 3DS, which is a shame because I liked playing on DSXL, just thought 3DS wasn't worth the money.
That trailer has me thinking otherwise now :( Damn, I wish portable versions were that varied in battle and open.

The whole conference was just 1 game after another, which is a good thing of course. No mention of the ad-on, so seems like it'll be a capcom-produced add-on for the Monster Hunter games.

The only downside was, most if not all of nintendos stuff was expected. The only real surprises were MH4, Hatsune miku, and ace combat.

What is up with mainline entries going portable lately? I have like the highest quality library of portable epics known to man and almost nothing for my consoles.

Japanese gamers prefer portables to consoles this gen, therefore a lot of high-profile titles are coming out on portables.

That's probably the case. Monster Hunter 3G this year and MH4 sometime between 2012 and '13. I bet we'll see a western release of 3G by the time they have 4, knowing Capcom and their more precious fanbase in Japan.

Nope. I find it disgusting that the 3DS is now going to have three million more units sold in Japan just because of this, three million Japanese people are going to be trapped with a handheld they won't use for anything else, and that Nintendo's stock is going to normalize just because of this slimy move.

It may be because it's an optional accessory for Monster Hunter fans who would prefer to play traditionally with 2 analog sticks. MH3G will make use of the touch screen otherwise, I'm sure. That brick of an addon is probably not in Nintendo's immediate future and may not make it into the much fabled 3DS Lite. I think the 3DS is fine with one circle pad, but needs software like Monster Hunter.

Every portable release of Monster Hunter since PSP garnered millions of sales. If it's in Japan, it'll have no problem selling.

Good at hunting monsters. Not necessarily games or platforms. Jokes aside I'm mainly talking about the western audience, many of whom have heard of monster hunter but never played it because it's always on a system they don't own.

Monster Hunter is kind of a system-seller in Japan. And I guarantee you it will never be anywhere near as big in the West, no matter which platform it's on.

You sound just like those idiots at Capcom. It's not about making it as big in the west as it is in Japan. That's not a reasonable goal. Yet that's their excuse for not putting it on a system where it has a chance to succeed. If they would just give it a legitimate chance it could be much bigger than it is.

You want them to neuter their sales on home turf just to pander to the west?
NO company would do that.

Why would they sacrifice sales from their biggest consumer demographic to take risks on an entirely different one? Japanese gamers are interested in Monster Hunter (and games in general) for portables. Western gamers are not that interested in portable games that aren't attached to existing big-name franchises and they're really not that interested in Monster Hunter.
Also, like Dragon Quest, there's a reason MH is not likely to become more than a niche phenomenon in the West, and that's popular taste. Do you really see a slow, stiffly controlling game that demands teamwork and patience in sizable amounts becoming a hit with the Call of Duty crowd, or even the Final Fantasy crowd? And don't compare it to World of Warcraft - there are a number of significant differences there (platform, online component, social aspect, etc.).
