Nintendo targeting women with new pink 3DS in Japan on October 20

You're a dude, totally comfortable with your masculinity -- well, don't even think about buying this new 3DS, because it's not for you. Unless you live in Japan, in which case we can't really stop you from buying one.

Because Nintendo's 3DS user base is mostly male, the company is hoping this new pink model will generate some interest among the fairer sex, along with some new games content such as a sequel to Tomodachi Collection and another Girls Mode title (known here in the States as Style Savvy). Iwata announced that the "Misty Pink" 3DS will launch in Japan on October 20.

No, im pretty sure it does seem like the colors of VS. Pink, Clear Pink and Black.

They already had red, blue, and black. All three are fine colors as is. Just because the console's pink doesn't mean it's for girls automatically and will sell. Cmon Nintendo.

And would be rather upset at this news, as she had been holding out on buying a 3DS but caved in for the dropped price.

I'm a woman and I don't like pink nether does any other female in my family including my mom (her favorite color is purple) even going to school growing up most girls didn't seem to really like pink all that much either. Also if were talking about culture history pink actually first considered the color for guys and blue for girls.

Superior Virtual Boy Red 3DS maintains superiority.

I really dislike that the top and bottom screen have mismatching colors. This one looks particularly terrible to me. I understand it's necessary to enhance the 3D-effect, but still...

Red 3DS if only to see what the Virtual Boy could of have been if they didn't rush it.

It's insulting and sad at the same time how Nintendo never really changes anything except the color palette.

I love how the defacto color to aim at women is pink. Hey Nintendo, had you kept that gorgeous metallic purple, maybe I'd of bought the paperweight that is the 3DS. Don't insult us with pink and nothing else.

It may seem stereotypical, but you cannot deny the cultural impact of the color pink. Generally speaking, many males despise the color (thinking it makes things "girly"), and many females like the color. Most of the females in my family like pink (my younger cousin having owned a pink DS Lite, for example). Many of my female friends and coworkers like pink (I've seen a few Android phones and iPhones at work with pink cases...).
It's just a color. One that happens to be liked by many females. In an alternate dimension, blue is considered to be the "feminine" color, and then people are whining about things being made blue just to appeal to women.

You mean if we were to go back to older culture tradition when it comes to gender color, blue would be considered feminine. Since it was at first and pink was actually the manly color. Also it may just be were you live because most girls around here in my area including me do not like the color pink I myself prefer red and my favorite color combination is red and black. To bad Nintendo hasn't really made a true red and black 3DS like the DSLite was since I would prefer that over my 3DS being 90% percent red like they have now.

Anyhow, I do think it's sexist on the part of Nintendo, but it's pretty mild and might help their sales. After all, Mrs. SSJPabs, and Sister SSJPabs both have pink DS's.

Man. I wish this were a launch day color. I would have gotten it right away! What would have been even cooler is if they could have put Kirby's face on the lid. Make it look like Kirby swallowed your 3DS :-D. Heck pink is a cool color anyway.

I'm sorry, but as much as I love my blue 3DS, this truly is awesome. I'm not a girl and I'm definitely not gay, but this is bloody fantastic. Minus the blood. Leave that for the red one.

If you want to market to women, try not hypersexualizing them and casting them in bit roles as eye-candy for male players. That might be a good first step. Not this patronizing stereotyped bullshit. Gaming goes out of its way to alienate half its potential demographic, both through its usual efforts and through "market outreach" failures like this.

Re pink - have you seen a children's toy store recently? I agree it's kind of a distasteful thing but afraid it's not going away any time soon - and at least with 3DS, it's exactly the same system - nobody's going to force anyone to buy the pink one if they don't want it. If a girl doesn't like pink, that's cool, because the black 3DS is clearly the best-looking one anyhow...

You know, when Sony announced their Llilac Hanna Montana PSP, the media was just like "hey, new color." They weren't like "OMG! whoring themselves out to get the attention of girls!!"
