I really enjoyed the demo and I'm considering picking it up just to support the developer and to say "This is what we need more of!".

It's not like it was the game itself that did it, it's the way they took the controls and just made it "work".

Great review, would loe to see more written like this.

I played the Demo and was blown away, this game is FRESH.

Annoyingly bought Fruit Ninja afterwards (another brilliant Kinect title) only to find out the Gunstringer comes with a free Fruit Ninja Kinect download.

Gunstringer + Fruit Ninja Kinect for £25?

You would be mad not to guys, pick it up!

I just wanted to say that that was one of the single most entertaining reviews I have read in a long time. Excellent work. BTW, my favorite line was "You don't have to make your hand into a gun shape while you do this, but in a way, you do have to, because, what are you, a monster?"

I've already expressed my love for your reviews, Justin, but it needs to be said again - You're reviews are always a good read and thoroughly entertaining, even if you're hating on a game I liked. Well done, again. You've actually convinced me to buy this.

It also includes the first DLC and Fruit Ninja. Nice.

Color me impressed and considering this is the second 5 out of 5 star Kinect review we've seen this year.

If I decide to pick up a Kinect in the near future this will be one of my first purchases.

I tried the demo and I think the lighting in my room affected the kinect's accuracy so I was hesitant to buy this. When it worked it was awesome, love the aesthetic and Wavy Tube Man rules, I might have to bite the bullet and pick it up.

Also, great Apollo 18 reference in the headline. Love that album and TMBG.

My mind has been swirling with skepticism for a while now. But this, Child of Eden, Dance Central, Mass Effect 3, Ghost Recon...I don't know how to feel. There's a slight, underlying layer of temptation, strangely.

It's a great accessory to have around IMO. Hasn't changed day to day gaming and does not get used on an overly regular basis (maybe a couple days a month), but it's really fun to have there for a change of pace, or for Family / Party gaming. Plus the new dash is supposedly fully integrating it, so that should be sweet (with the voice control at least, I'm not overly interested in gesture control for the dash myself).

All that said: at this stage of the game, if I didn't have one already, I'd definitely hold off a couple more months for Holiday deals that are probably coming.

I know you said not to trust you for this review but I'm starting to wonder if I can trust you for any review...

"The Gunstringer has some problems. Its sitting controls aren't perfect. It needs some tonal variation. The movement controls take some getting used to."

so game is not perfect and does not work at is says it should (sitting controls fubared) but you give it a perfect score anyways? What the f*ck ever happened to serious and honest reviews? Between the other game sites that get paid to say good things and now this site giving wacky scores, where should I go for real reviews?

I know that mobile/kinect/wii/move titles are different than say the Gears of War, God of War, Zelda games out there but come on.... A 4.5 our of 5 would have been better but to me, a 5/5 is the epitome of gaming. This is an absolute "must play" game of the year. The controls, music, design and flow of the game are untouchable. Story was top notch... that is a 5/5 for me.

Perhaps he loved the hell out of this game and had an absolute blast playing it. For example, I would give Vanquish a 5/5. Is it the epitome of gaming? Is the story top notch? Hell no! But guess what? I loved every second of it and it's some of the most fun I've had in a long time.

Remember that some reviews might not reflect your opinions.

Joystiq put off adding scores to its reviews for so long that when we finally decided to include them, we wanted to make sure it would provide a real value to you, our dear reader, rather than just an arbitrary number.

When you read a review on Joystiq, know that we're less concerned with the game itself than the experience of playing the game. The phrase we use internally is "telling the story of the experience," and our review scores endeavor to do the same thing. While most review scores advise you on how to spend your money, we believe that the much more valuable commodity is your time, and our scoring system reflects that.

We use a 5-star rating system. When you look at our review scores, pretend that you've just asked the author if playing the game is an experience you should have. Not "should I buy it" but "should I play it." The number translates to some variation of the following answers.

5 stars - Yes.

I wonder why the hell you care so damn much... It's just a scoring system. A scoring system is basically a concretization of something abstract that we make up ourselves. It means nothing but we are conditioned to have this need to see a number (or a number of stars) associated with a review. I don't trust any reviews anymore, but if I did, it would be Justin's words that would matter and not how many f*cking stars he gave the game.

@ToTheMoon Think of it as a 5/5 for a Kinect Game and not ALL games. Not everyone sees it this way, which is a problem. I don't own a Kinect, let alone a 360 and I get what they mean. I just feel that in the past, other sites have reviewed all games equally and it was a bad idea. They are trying something new and I feel it works. Give it a chance and use some of your personal judgment to decide whether or not something is right for you. Reviews are a guide, not a decision.

You want me to leave? Fair enough. Before i go, I want to say something.

I only asked what I did because I love joystiq. Up-to-date news, good insights into the industry, an open, vibrant and colorful community are just some of the things I like about the site (clean look/feel, quick to load, good mobile apps are some others).

I would love to have a one stop shop for my game news/review perusing which is why I did my mini-rant on the review section. You editors/authors give real life to your reviews but I just find them inconsistent. Sure it's new way of doing it and maybe it doesn't sit well with me, but your response to ask me to leave I think is a bit harsh. Blaming everything that is wrong with the comment section on me is a bit strong but hey, I guess you took offense to what I said and asked.

Someday, you may realize the importance of free speech, even if you don't always agree with the content of it. I wonder how you would feel if you were asked to leave a place you enjoyed and were then mocked because you disagreed with some "esteemed" person. To me that is a form of bullying. You gave no defense at all and instead lashed out at me. I don't hold it against you as we all have our not so proud moments Justine. For what it's worth, I really enjoy your writing style.. You have a flair that I can never hope to match and kudos for you for that. I was just asking for some consistency in the rating system, if I came across too strong, I apologize.

So with that, I bid Joystiq a farewell. It's been interesting.

PS. Regardless of all this, I'm still going to try the Gunstringer.

@ToTheMoon...This is purely speculation on my part, but in your original post you seemed to be kinda insinuating that Joystiq receives compensation from game companies for positive reviews. Yes, I realize you didn't say that, but I believe it certainly could be interpreted that way. You praise Joystiq for their insight and colorful perspective, then condemn the author when he did just that.

When I read this article/review, I could literally see the smile on Justin's face as he talked about this game, which in turn made me smile, and you kinda sh** on that.

Oh yeah, obligatory can't we all get along, hug, make cupcakes remark

@Slight of Ham

Never meant there to be any insinuations of payments from companies to Joystiq for reviews. They are very independent and it is something I liked about this site.

That being said, yes, Justin had a big smile and abashedly loved the games despite a few minor flaws. Perhaps it is because I am from a different generation than he that I place too much emphasis on the rating system because I am used to it meaning something. You can give a game 5/5 for fun but then give it a 4/5 for controls Methinks too much time has been wasted on this and I'm starting to think that perhaps it was better when Joystiq did not have a rating system at all. At least that way, people were forced to read the review and then you could read the enthusiasm Justin has for the game and go with that.

Apologies for coming back to post this one but I wanted to clear up the fact that I was NOT insinuating that Joystiq of being in anyone pockets.

ToTheMoon just said that he thought your review scores are wacky and he gave some reasons with respect to the Gunslinger review.

He really wasn't overly rude or anything, I think comments like his are needed for good active discussions about review scores.

There have been far worse commenters on the site and I think ToTheMoon is unfairly taking taking the brunt for all of them.

I thought you were a little harsh on the guy. I'm not defending his comment, but I'd reserve the insulting-invitation-to-leave comment for those who truly lack intelligence to know when they're wrong and/or the trolls. I fully admit, his original comment was not good and his post-ban comments were a little trollish. But then I went and looked up his profile. 260+ comments on the site and none of the ones I viewed appeared to be trollish. The guy just assumed that the rating system of other sites (IGN, Gamespot, etc) should apply here. He also didn't go about his criticism in the right way at all, dropping the f* bomb and all. I think it was accurately pointed out that he was misinterpreting the Joystiq 5-star rating.

I would have at least given him a chance nicely to correct his ways. He may have turned it around. Of course, damage already done, that bridge is already burned now.
