Minecraft update 1.8 is (officially) live
53
We know that Minecraft version 1.8 (also referred to as the "Adventure Update") has been available through semi-official means since late last week, after a Mojang developer leaked the update with the studio's blessing. If you don't feel like chasing down the file, however, you can now grab the patch through the Minecraft launcher, where it recently went live for all users.
We realize this doesn't have much impact on our more tech-savvy, file-hunting readers, but if you share our fear of downloading a game update which is secretly an illegal bestiality porno virus, you can now download the update free of that particular worry.
[Thanks, Richard.]

It's adventure time!

Minus most of the adventure, unfortunately. A lot of the features that would really flesh out adventure mode were delayed to 1.9.
So while experience exists in the game now, it does absolutely nothing. Abandoned mineshafts and strongholds generate, but there are no bosses for them yet. NPC villages generate, but there are no NPCs in the game yet.
1.8 Added a number of new things to the game, but calling it the adventure update is a stretch from the truth, because the game still lacks several core features required for adventure mode. 1.9 will be the real adventure update, because it will add those missing core features.

@Ceridith You gotta eat to survive. Best way to eat is to hunt. To hunt, you need to leave the house. ADVENTURE!

I'm keeping 1.7.3 until the Yogbox works with 1.8. So far it looks like that's better than what Notch has added anyways...

Wait, I thought this was going to come out on 11/11/11...

@DURDADUR That's when the game exits the beta stage and somehow mysteriously becomes an official release with absolutely no patches or additional content.

At the rate they're going, 1.9 might not even make 11/11/11. Notch hasn't even been working on Minecraft much recently. He's been working on other projects.

This update has made it genuinely exciting to explore! ...but at the same time, it's missing things like "snow," "people in the villages," and "something to do with the experience orbs."
It really needs the content that's coming with 1.9 to feel complete. :(

@Faenix But if they didn't release all the half-working stuff, there wouldn't really be anything of value added to 1.8 that justified months in the oven.

I'm sorta hoping that Snow becomes a seasonal thing instead of an all the time thing. I really did like the arctic biomes but after the weather was introduced ..... snow became a blight.
I would gladly welcome it back if snow/ice melted in non arctic biomes and or it was the aforementioned seasonal thing. It would also be cool if it stayed above a certain height. EG high in the mountains.

Someday I'll hop on the Bandwagon and get Minecraft.
It does appeal to me on certain levels but it's still not there for me yet, and I didn't have time to play it for free from the Humble Bundle promotion. So it's a risk not worth taking for me since my primary interest in it comes from other's raving interest in it. I've had a mix bag of acting on such things in the past.

I don't think anyone else has said this, but the 1.8 that was leaked a few days back wasn't the OFFICIAL complete 1.8, but a pre-release for testers that had numerous bugs here and there. The one that they released today has everything fixed, so there was a difference. Just thought I'd let you guys know that.

@1UPForever
I wouldn't say leaked as much as I would say released for wider scale testing. While simultaneous avoiding bitching from the general population who would have otherwise hit "update now" without thinking and run into that nasty furnace bug (amongst others)
Was a good move on their part and I'm hoping that is how they handle releases in the future, nothing is as much of a killjoy than 12 forum pages of "YOU BROAK MAI GAME NOTCH!"

@Shadows
Really? Well that's unfortunate. To be honest, I've been to busy to have a chance to try it out, and find these glitches. But the matter is that the article makes it sound like this exact release had been leaked earlier (their words, not mine) and was merely pointing out that that wasn't the case. I hope they fix these new bugs though, cause I've been pretty excited to play it!

Well, I'd like to try this out and see if it does anything interesting enough to get me back into the game, but I can't even log-in to get it. I guess I'll just keep on playing the waiting game, just like I've been doing since the update "leaked".

This update is shit. It adds a bunch of shells of features. Things that don't do anything or improve the game in any way whatsoever.
"Adventure Update" is the biggest lie notch has ever told. "Oh hey there's a building over there halfway sunken into the ground, that's cool for like 3 seconds I guess Update" would be much more accurate!

@FuzzyPierce there is no lie, he was upfront about what 1.8 was going to add.. he already stated the villages will be empty, and right now there is no real use for the experience orbs you collect basically 1.8 added places top explore and layed down the groundwork for update 1.9

I'll take interesting again if they radically improve the graphics. I'm all for retro, but Minecraft looks simply bad. But at this point, unless they include and option to choose, there'll be a riot if they dared to fix (yes, fix) the horrible art style.

@Dick Socrates Just took another look at the game after the update. I'd rather be dead than ever play it again. Deeply depressing rubbish.

Screw that, too much time would be wasted and spent on things that aren't what makes Minecraft so great. I just want an expanding world and more things to do. I grew up with Legos, so long as I can do anything my imagination will crank the figurative AA to x1000.

Well, if you don't like the graphics (like me), there are literally hundreds of texture packs, some of which are amazingly good, and 70% are unbelievably easy to install. The remaining 30% require an extra file to run one time before installing any, but it's still pretty simple.

All I really wish is that Notch would make texture pack support for textures greater than 16x a standard in the game instead of having to patch to use them.
There are also a ton of great textures out there, not dropping any specific names but *cough*Sphax PureBDCraft 128x*cough*
