Is Visceral Melbourne a different Visceral? or the same awesome ones who did the Dead Space franchise?

Never Mind, just checked, its Visceral RedWood that did the majority of Dead Space and Dante's Inferno. Melbourne was working on something of their own and helped with Redwood's development. (if i'm not mistaken)

Looks like I'll never get to play Virgil's Aeneid. But super seriously, best of luck to them. Australian studios have been hit hard with Pandemic, Irrational, and Krome having troubles / closing.

@Epoque Worst thing is that Australia's economy is roaring, but our gaming companies are being hit with layoffs. I do hope this is investigated by ASIC.

I would say you could call the closed down offices some "dead space", but this is too sad of a dillemma to lightly jest with. Hang in there, dev and dev families.

Whats with this news story hanging around Dead Space screenshots on websites? You boys tryin to drum up traffic ;)? Visceral Games made all the Dead Space games, and is working on the third one. They are located in California. You should really put a clarification in this news.

Visceral Melbourne is located in Melbourne. It is a branch of the whole Visceral.

Most publisher-owned developers and huge sole developers have different branches working under the main companies name.

I'm hating these publisher attitudes of "Oh your game is not good enough, I'm closing the whole studio".

I feel bad for these corporate publisher-owned developers. Must be very stressful to have the "BIG MAN" smelling you at work all the time and at anytime, can let you go.

Reason why I prefer independent developers more. They have their own culture and don't have to worry about pleasing the corporate business warlord.

I sincerely hope that Visceral Melbourne is just a branch of Visceral.

Dead Space is probably my favorite game series of all time, I'd be sad to see it die.

Boys, gaming is starting to funnel down into mediocrity. Even though we currently live in one of those best times for video games (if not the best), there is definitely a trend starting here which I do not like, and that trend is to rip the guts out of any developer that can't push out a multi-million selling FPS ever year.

Pre-order incentives, passcodes, talented dev studios getting closed on a weekly basis... This just isn't good. Give it a few years, all you'll see is a bunch of COD clones and maybe an indie PC market. Kind of sad, really.

Oh well, at least I still have my Gamecube.

@MW49350 Either way, saying that the game market will soon be literally nothing but FPSes and indie PC games is hyperbole. There are still huge markets for other genres like sports, action/adventure, strategy, casual, etc, and they're not going anywhere.

@Behonkiss Obviously there will still be "some" games of other genres- there's never going to be just shooters, but that's not the point. The point is that the trend of the gaming industry is corporatization. Smaller studios that once were able to find their legs are now unable to due so thanks to the ridiculous development costs of games, and have no choice but to sign with larger publishers who can fund them. Once doing so, if they aren't able to pump out massive games like Call of Duty, they get thrown by the wayside. Denying THAT is hyperbole.

You are absolutely right, and the funny thing is that EA was born exactly for the same reason that activision was created. to fight back "evil" Atari which was a corporation who cared about nothing but money and their programmers where only small replaceable gears that didn“t deserve any kind of credit. fast forward 30 years later and look what we have, the same thing that Atari did only WORST by those two companies, and people wonder if the market could be dead anytime soon......

If your name is in the credits of Dead Space you won't be out of work long.
Maybe they can help Capcom make RE6 better than RE5.

You have to remember too that most of these "Visceral" studies were just renamed EA Studios branches and not part of the original team.

I think a lot of you people continue to forget that games is a business. If a game does not make a profit especially with piracy, used games, rentals, friend sharing etc than the success for a studio to continue to operate is nil.

I wish I could see how many of you rightious people do any of the above and how many actually purchase a game at full retail or even discounted (developers/pub still get paid).

And please do not give me that crap about innovation because even though I hear that line alot, the purchase decisions show that is not what gamers are looking for. Gamers want familiar gameplay with little tweets because anytime something is changed radically, you get a whole lot of whining.

Studios and publishers do not mind taking risk if the risk vs rewards were profitable but in today's market that is not the question. Yes indie games can go there but that's because the manpower is much less, but that also means the polish is as well.

Gamers what the polish of games like Killzone 3 or Uncharted with their highend graphics but those types of games cost a lot to make and have huge teams to produce. Even then, if you strip out the graphics, the gameplay of either game really do not separate them from the other games in their same genres.

Why you see these studios closing and you get the same game with prettier graphics is because you have shown with your money, thats what you want. Blame the publishers all you want but do not forget that it's a two way partnership between them and you so a good helping of the blame also goes to the gamer.

Typical that companies do this they make a fantastic game and they go OK people PACK UP GET OUT YOU'RE DONE!!

Then the parent company makes out like a bandit while the people who did all the work are out of a job and steady employment!

It's the way of game industry and it needs to stop!! More companies are gonna lose good developers!

Just look at Infinity Ward and Activision as they are going to court in May of 2012!

@lazerbyte Typical ill-informed comment. The company doesn't "make out like a bandit", they first (if lucky) recoup the money they fronted the studio to make the game in the first place. Then, in the rare case where they make a profit, they reinvest most of it in another project.

Game budgets are way too high to suffer many failures. That's reality.
