I want an honest, non-fanboy answer; Can the PS3's camera do anything the Kinect can do? I realize it may not have as high of a resolution as Kinect but just in terms of capabilities.

@InDurdenWeTrust the kinect can measure the distance to create a 3d image ... ordinary cameras are 2 dimension only

@InDurdenWeTrust 2D cameras can in a way describe the 3rd dimension based on the scale of the object. The further away the item, the smaller it appears on the screen.

Most of the things Kinect does (voice technology, motion tracking, face recognition, gesture recognition) can be done using the PS3 camera, to varying degree. What the Kinect excels in, is that it doesn't have to "guess" what's background, what's foreground and the position of items in space, because in a way, it can actually "see in 3D", which makes it more precise at using the data it gathers and is a lot less tasking on the console itself. That's why for proper motion control on the PS3 you need the "Move", which helps the console establish your position in the 3 dimensional space. Voice controls (Singstar on the PS3 does them!), picture taking, 2D tracking, "putting masks on faces" etc. are just a gimmick and can be done with a standard camera+mic combo too.

@ thepeoplethatreplied

Thanks. Just the answers I was looking for. Although I feel the Kinect isn't for me I do think it's pretty awesome tech. I'm curious to see if motion gaming will be supported next gen. My Move stuff is a lot of fun but I don't use it as much as I thought I would. We need more software!

My God, did someone just make a coherent and logical explanation.

@Dark Archon PSN Archonik XBL Dar to make the 3D explanation short: it uses lasers to gauge the distance between what it hits from where it started to determine what is what. So as you are using your kinect, it is prodding every fiber of your being.... with lasers. also, it's molesting your wall.

i just call em lasers cuz they remind me of lasers. i have no idea what they are; IR maybe?

@Dick Socrates - Yes, I'm sure those 10+ Million people that bought the device have zero interest in more games for it.

OMG, yes, I would LOVE an AntiGrav port for Kinect. That game was awesome.

For the unlearned, it was basically SSX with hoverboards. The controls were the best on the EyeToy (of course) and it was pretty fun to boot.

Yes yes, I applaud all these attempts at creativity, but we all know what Kinect would be perfect for: Porn.

That's exciting, I would love to see what they could pull off outside of the rhythm/music genre!

I had a PS2 and EyeToy, but never heard of AntiGrav until now. Odd. But anyway, this type of game wouldn't be bad on Kinect

@Starcade
They kind of already have it. I think its the same type of gameplay as Sonic Riders.
