Except that xbox updates take about 10 seconds. Which mathematically makes playstation's updates take 60 times longer.

@Roxas560 It's not bad until you sit down to play a game and suddenly have this patch to download and install first.

It's also annoying at the frequency they come out. 10 minutes ain't THAT bad, but the amount of time spent patching overall is kind of a little excessive.

Especially if the game you want to play also has a 100+mb patch.

@Roxas560 On it's own it's not bad. But then consider that it's 10 minutes if you have a wired connection, which doubles to 20 minutes if you are on wireless (because wireless on PS3 is super slow for some reason). And then consider that the title you want to play has 3 updates, each of which takes another 10 minutes. Now that quick match of Killzone 3 you wanted to play turned into an hour of updating.

And as others have mentioned, the Xbox typically takes less than 30 seconds to do these things on the exact same wifi network. The PS3 is even on a DMZ, while the Xbox is not!

I agree.....its such a tedious task having to update your gaming machines firmware once in a while! I mean just imagine what you could have done in the 10 minutes that Sony spent trying to move the console you paid for forward! In fact lets all go back to the Sega Genesis (Mega Drive) where we know we wont get any updates because were all too scared of a little change!!

..........Updates had nothing to do with that and wouldn't have prevented anything in regards to the PSN itself. Maybe if they had updated the network security on their end but the end user never would have seen that.

@Roxas560

There is a fair bit of difference in letting a system idle while you choose to go do something else and going to start a game and getting hit with 10min of updating screen.

My wifes dad inherited a PS3 that he uses for Netflix. Whenever there's an update he can't watch Netflix. That's about as much as he knows about his magic movie playing box.

To somebody like that, these frequent "updates" really make a PS3 undesirable for someone that isn't a gamers and technologically saavy.

I don't mind patches as a concept. But when I haven't played my PS3 for a while (happens often, we don't all game 24/7 unfortunately) and say I want to play an older game... it's not unusual to take over an hour before I actually get to a title menu between system updates and then title updates. and I've got a nice cable connection. If I were on DSL in my area it would literally be hours longer... The alternative is don't install updates and then you can't play online.

Contrast to the xbox, where the longest I've ever had to wait was during a full dash update and a game title update which took a total of 30 minutes and happens at most twice a year...

Factor in that the PS3 has a "solution" in the form of automatic updates atleast for the console, which you have to pay extra for, and I think getting annoyed at frequent, trivial, time consuming updates is pretty well justified. It's not that updates are bad, it's that the competition (the 360) does SUCH a better job from a user perspective (and this is MS, not known for getting things right generally speaking...) that the PS3 updates are so distracting.

it creates a situation where I avoid using the PS3 because I know I'll have to wait for updates. So the longer I don't use the PS3 the more updates there are and the more I avoid it... I've bought 360 versions of games specifically to avoid update hassles on the PS3.

Has nothing to do with the system itself, the services, the games, etc. just the user experience of updating.

@Co I'll try to remember to test this tonight, but I know you can use Netflix without logging into the PSN, so I wouldn't be surprised if you could use it without updating.

People seem to forget that if you're not playing an online game, (or trying to use the store or sync trophies... any PSN stuff), you can put off any of these updates for later (system updates or game updates).

It's all relative, 10 minutes of torture or 10 minutes of sex. Sometimes 10 minutes is just too long, sometimes not enough.

In this case, it's definitely at least 9 minutes longer than it would take on an Xbox (or PC, or smartphone, or.. anything not a PS3).

@The Moof Except that you don't actually *have* to download that update. It's an SP game. When prompted, just hit circle to decline the update, and get right to the game.

And for the people that say "I hardly ever play my PS3 and when I turn it on I have to download three updates," even if you don't play it, it's not that big a deal to turn it on once in a while to check for an update. When I read about a new update (before I had PS+), right when I got home I would power on the PS3 and start the update, even though I'm usually not going to play for a couple hours. Takes 10 seconds and it's ready to go when I want to play.

You dont have to install the update if you dont have long to play, you can simply press cancel and play the game as usual and when you do have the time install the update. Sure you cant play any online games but if you dont have long to play online might not be a good idea...

Except that they're not really. If these updates had actual new functionality, I'm sure very few people would have an issue with them. I know I wouldn't...

But as a non-PS Plus member, I can't remember the last time that I got any worthwhile value from one of these updates.

@Belial There's nothing wrong with my wireless. I have a 80gb backwards compat version, it's entirely possible that Sony changed out the wireless on the PS3 in later models. But I assure you I had spent hours upon hours dealing with connection issues whenever a firmware update for PS3 came out. I used to use a WRT54G, of which I tried multiple routers. The PS3 is on a DMZ so there should not be any port issues. That model of router didn't even support as much port forwarding as Sony recommends. There was like 20 different entries they recommend. I now use an Airport Extreme which doesn't freak out every time Sony updates firmware, but it's not faster on wireless. All of the other wireless devices in my house are fine. It just is and always has been wireless on the stupid PS3. It's painfully slow. And I'm not the only person who has the issue, try googling it.

Yeah I've heard people talk about super slow download times on PSN but I've never had an issue I remember (vaguely) reading something about it having to do with your NAT type. Could be completely wrong.

Going off my own experience with downloading stuff on XBL I do remember it being exponentially faster than PSN for pretty much everything. My 360 seemed to DL faster than everything else though including iTunes.
