DLC is the new black, you know? During the recently concluded Tokyo Game Show, Square Enix producer Yoshinori Kitase announced a fair amount of DLC for this winter's sequel to a sequel: Final Fantasy XIII-2.
Now, DLC is par for the course for a lot of western RPGs, thanks in no small part to the Dragon Ages and Mass Effects of the world, but it's virgin territory for the everlasting, oxymoronic Final Fantasy series, spinoffs not withstanding. Nothing specific was revealed, but Kitase did mention weapons, monsters and costumes as being on tap. We hope Square Enix goes whole hog; we'd pay 1200 MS Points for a blinged out Historia Crux.

.....but the game is still in development....can't they just throw the "DLC" in there with all the time they have left until the release date....?

Of course they can, but they rather not.
Square Enix wants some of that Yum Yum Milk Milk gamers provide.

@Viriathus Welcome to the EA school of DLC practice.
today's lecture, with holding content and releasing it as DLC on day 1, and how it optimizes cash gain like no tomorrow. Minimal work, maximum profit.

@Viriathus - Although they announced it, it doesn't necessarily mean its in development now. Of course, even if it is in development now (which is well possible) the DLC would likely be being handled by a separate branch of development that has its own DLC budget (in other words, the DLC wouldn't be getting made anyway, if there was no plans to sell it afterwards)

Just because they've announced plans to have support for DLC post release, doesn't mean thei developing it now.
Companies are allowed to announce a plan to do something in the future.

Not according to budgets they can't. There is a game budget that they can cap out on, then a DLC budget for little sidequest and bullshit like armor/weapons/outfits. I'd pay for extra dungeons like the Dragonopolis of FFXII or the Sunken Dungeon in Lost Odyssey... Not so much for character outfits. Not sure why people buy them in fighting games, let alone in a JRPG.

KH3 > New FF DLC

While I agree, the two don't really have any correlation. Until FFXIII Versus is finished, we're never gonna hear anything about KH3.

Considering how Japan has even LESS of an idea of how to properly do DLC than North America, I bet you 800 MS points you're right.

@Apsac D - Wait a second... so you acknowledge that that money constraints are a realistic barrier to things being included within the core game experience.. but still you think the DLC should be free (knowing that they couldn't justify the expense in the first place)?
I'll agree that if it's a core piece of the game and couldn't be completed due to time (or a lack of foresight during development) then it should be free. If it's something like a skin, weapon, or armor for a game which is already good value (which I'm hesistant to say will be the case with FFXIII-2) then it's probably doing no harm

This DLC is going to cost far more than it's worth. I can just see that happening.

@Electrium I apologize in advance for not being more clear. My personal take on DLC is that I'm totally game for it as long as it's worth the price. $6 for three new race courses, a new racer or two, a new vehicle or two or three, plus a new game mode? Heck yes. $10 for a new chapter consisting of only two or three levels? NO.
If the DLC for FFXIII-2 is like, a new dungeon or chain of sidequests, I might look into it, but $4-5 for costumes or new individual weapons...no go.

if it reskins Noel and Serah from being the disgusting unwanted mess that they are and puts back Lightning as the lead, then count me in.

Don't you see FF 13 was simply a tutorial for FF 13 - 2.
The entire game was made so you could be prepared for the awesomness of FF 13 - 2 and FF 13 - 3

If its actually expanding on the game and not unlocking content that isn't already there and finished...I'm ok with it.
If its just a cash grab to force people to buy the rest of the game, they can power-sit on a broomstick...
For instance: "Purchase this DLC *NOW* go to the town of Narshe for only 12$..act now and we'll throw in this zombie moogle and disable the ads during loading screens!!"

The only times I've ever bought DLC were for Burnout Paradise and Borderlands which in both cases added new regions and may, many hours of gameplay. Unfortunately, most game companies don't follow that and just make quick, overpriced DLC like a weapon for new skin for 2.99.
If they make a meaningful expansion that adds more content the game (not just what you're wearing or wielding), I'd have no problem spending $5 or $10 on it - actually, I would be glad to as I really enjoy all Final Fantasy games, even 13.

@(Unverified) Or maybe, just maybe, some people buy some DLC because they actually think it's worth the money. There's bad DLC (palette swaps in Street Fighter III) and good DLC (new missions in Assassin's Creed or Prince of Persia) and some people are actually smart enough to be able to tell the difference without throwing a temper tantrum.

Yeah, but announcing DLC way before the game is even set to release, and long before gold status? That's really sneaky.

@Red Runner - Making a public announcement is "sneaky"? I would assume that making no announcement would be even "sneakier". If anything, I would say that making an announcement of it this early is bad marketing.
Of course you were probably referring to the actual development of said DLC being sneaky. In which case I'd argue that that's still not sneaky. That's called project management.
Now if you wanted to claim that they weren't developing DLC and instead were going back to lock stuff off that wasn't originally going to be DLC... well then I would agree with you and say that yes, that would be sneaky indeed
