EA claims sales of its NHL series are up this year, a sure sign of Canada's culture spreading like spilled Tim Horton's coffee across the globe. NHL 12 sales were up 19 percent year over year, with first week sales for the series breaking franchise records, selling 451,000 copies at retail globally.
NHL 12 also had 6.9 million online connected game sessions last week, the most online games played in one week in franchise history and 17 percent more than last year's opening week.
All is not lost, America. Madden NFL 12 sold 1.4 million copies in its first week, so take comfort in that fleeting security -- and ignore that FIFA 11 sold 2.6 million in five days.

Congrats to NHL. Amazing Sport.

Alexander I am surprised you used a Tim Hortons reference with the Canadians ( Is Canadian ) and it's true ( not saying everyone loves it or likes it. ) But I Love Tim Hortons.
and about the real topic at hand. I figure NHL games would have sold more then that in the opening week of retail, well i guess you learn something new everyday.
P.S. I Love Tim Hortons more then I Love my Hockey .... but just by a bit

Oh God Tim Horton's....
Tim Horton's has one thing going for it, the price. You can buy an extra large coffee for under $3... but it definitely will not be the best coffee you have ever had, far from it in fact.

@Huey2k2 - Yep, exactly. I'm not sure what made Tim Horton's into, like, this "national obligation." Our city had to pass a Tim Horton's bylaw that made it illegal to park in the street while waiting in line for Tim Horton's drive-through (which, you know, kind of shows what kind of attitude my city has towards things like public transit and/or actually just walking inside the store.)
For my money, Robin's Donuts is where it's at - heck, they even use organic coffee! Which is pretty rare for a dive-coffee chain.

I'm pretty sure the sales are way up because everyone wants to see the Winnipeg Jets in action!

@Draco Tru dat! I'm quite certain the sales jump is directly related to the amount of crazy Hockey hosers that bought it for Winnipeg. The midnight launches were pretty impressive for our little ghost town, certainly.

Hmm, maybe helps that there is no 2k sports version this year to compete against it.

Tried the demo and I found it needlessly complicated...and the commentary was pretty broken. Won't be buying it.

that's why there's a NHL 94 Controlls option. Besides it's not like it's impossible to learn. Even if you haven't been playing since NHL 07.
That said can't wait to pick this up. my money went to Gears 3's epic edition.
I'm a bad canadian lol. GO OILERS!

I wonder how much it had to do with the Jets coming back. Although, now that I think of it, the phoenix coyotes would have the Jets' retro jersey to choose from in previous NHL versions.

I'm sure SOMEONE will give me hell for this, because that's always how it is, but Go Leafs Go!
On another note, I know they have about half a dozen more games sold this year because my friends and I are all on a "every other year" thing where these games are concerned. We started in 08 and we've all stuck to it since.

I agree
They must have sold a TON of that to eager Winnipeg Jets fans dying to play a game again as their home team
I know I'll be lining up at midnight the year my Nordiques are back!

I picked up this game for the first time in a while! I've taken the time to learn some of the mechanics and acclimate myself to the controls, but I think EA messed up on this one.
There is almost no way for you to learn to play effectively other than jumping right in. The tutorials are really a joke and don't explain things very well. On top of that the lack of a paper manual makes it very difficult to play right off the bat.
Face-offs are a perfect example of this. They do a tutorial for it, but don't really explain how a backhand beats a stick lift, which beats a forehand, which can be defeated by tying up, which is weaker than a backhand. That is incredibly useful info (and I had to find it on some random NHL 11 youtube video). I was super frustrated with faceoffs online until I learned this.
I love the game, but I just wish EA would have done a better job with "teaching" the noobs how to play in their game. Especially since it seems there are a lot of us this year >.>
