Counter-Strike: GO gets Arsenal Mode with help from modders

When Valve launches its new download-only Counter-Strike game next year, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, it'll add several "Arsenal" modes to the multiplayer FPS. The Washington-based developer has announced a partnership with the creators of the popular "Gun Game" mod, on which Arsenal is based.

In Gun Game, players start with a simple gun and then gain access to more powerful weaponry as they score kills. The Arsenal "Arms Race" and "Demolition" modes will collectively add eight maps to CS: GO, and "expand on the classic Counter-Strike gameplay." Beyond its Gun Game lineage, we haven't yet seen how Arsenal mode plays out. We'd bet on there being quite a few dead terrorists by the end, though.

VALVE ANNOUNCES ARSENAL MODES FOR COUNTER-STRIKE: GLOBAL OFFENSIVE (CS: GO)

September 22, 2011 - Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Counter-Strike, Half-Life, Left 4 Dead, Portal, and Team Fortress) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced the new game modes for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS: GO).

Targeted for release via Playstation Network, Xbox Live Arcade, and Steam (for PC and Mac) in early 2012, CS: GO will expand upon the team-based action gameplay that it pioneered when it was launched 12 years ago.

Arsenal Mode is based on the popular Counter-Strike: Source mod Gun Game. "Arsenal: Arms Race" and "Arsenal: Demolition" add eight new maps and expand on the classic Counter-Strike gameplay.

Valve is working directly with creators of Gun Game to create Arsenal Mode. "We are excited that Valve reached out and is working with us to ensure Arsenal Mode is the best version of Gun Game.", Michael Barr project lead of Gun Game.

Wouldn't it be more interesting if you started off with the good guns and worked your way down to pistols to win the match?

@Laivindil If I remember correctly, it does work that way, toward the end. Last kill has to be with a knife.

Yeah, and as soon as I said that I thought, it does say multiple modes. So could mean that they have switched it up or have one that goes in either direction (good-> bad, bad -> good) etc.

@tehspap You're correct. You usually start out with a pistol, and then slowly move up tier after tier. You start getting more powerful guns, and then you start getting down to the nitty and gritty guns that are hard to kill with towards the end.

Eventually, you'll end up having to get HE Grenade kills, and then the final kill with the knife. So, you don't "exactly" whittle down to pistols, but from what I remember of the mod, it was based upon how hard the guns / weapons are to kill with.

Yeah I play on a couple reverse gun game servers. I always liked those more than the regular gun game ones.

There is an option for this in current GunGame, and many (though not most) servers play this way.
It does make more sense, and is the way my friends and I prefer to play.

@BlueRajasmyk Idk if it's a mod of a mod, but most of the gun game servers I've played on lately play up the tiers and then all the way back down again to win.

So you start with pistols, play up to grenades and knife and then play all the way back down. And some of them have another grenade and knife once you get back to the bottom.

I'm hoping for some customizability too, but considering how most Xbox conversions of customizable PC games go, there won't be any.

Personally I prefer the random weapon gungame matches, in which at the start of the round, the weapons you get at different levels are randomized, but each level is still the same weapon for each player to keep it balanced. I also like the pyramid style that some servers have set up whereas you start with the lowest weapon, work your way up to the knife kill, then go all the way back down to the start weapon in reverse order and get one last knife kill to win.

GunGame on CS:S is not one set list of weapons, there is a default but any server operator can edit that list or make it randomized if they choose.

Amazing, I love me some Gun Game! Can't wait to purchase this game a 4th time. CS, CS:CZ, CS:S and now CS:GO. Well actually I guess I never purchased CS, since it was a half life mod, but whatever!

@That One Guy Counter Strike was never about holding the players hands. Anyways, the last kill requires you to knife someone.

Gun Game doesn't work on a direct curve upward, it's more like a bell curve. You go up to the good stuff, from there you start getting the hard to use shit thrown at you, giving players that were behind in weapons a chance to catch up, or you a chance to prove your skill.

Can Valve do anything without help from modders?

the screens don't look if the game looks that good i might consider getting it but for now i'll stick with 1.6

Arsenal Gear?

This is simply unbelievable amazing for me.

I've been a CS-only player for years and people often think I'm not a hardcore CS fan just because all these years pratically the only game mode I've played all day and night was Gun Game.

To see it finally getting some official recognition and - even better - having this come to the console version of the game is just awesome news for me.
Day 1 purchase for me without a doubt.

Well, I"m also a big CS fan and am excited about it coming to consoles, but I fully believe it could very easily suck big time.

Definitely not a day one purchase for me - need to see reviews, try a demo etc.
