Square, this is how you make an RPG on the PS3.

Damn right!

See that Square? See that big open beautiful overworld? See those awesome imaginative towns? See them flying over the world in a dragon? That's what Final Fantasy used to have!

...but didn't Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light have a dragon? And an open world? The towns were pretty imaginative. One town was a whale. The characters were alright. Graphics were pleasing. Gameplay was fun and the music brought on nostalgia from the 16-bit era. This game was released first in Oct 2009.

No, no Square-Enix is bringing us what we want, but in all the wrong places.

@pluupy

But it's not a numbered Final Fantasy, a Final Fantasy that Square is putting all their promotion and budget into. The Final Fantasy that they are putting resources towards does not share any of the facets that made it Final Fantasy in the first place, it does not have the features that I see done so well in this Ni No Kuni trailer. Level 5 proves that JRPG overworlds can still be done. They did it with Dragon Quest 8 and they're doing it with Ni No Kuni. Squeenix hasn't proved it can deliver anything close to the Final Fantasy's of old. It's why everyone is clamoring for Ni No Kuni instead of FFXIII-2. Ni No Kuni evokes that sense of wonder and makes you want to play the game in order to explore the rich and colorful world it presents. Whereas people are only interested in Final Fantasy because it carries the shell of the name.

@singleandlovinit They've been making an RPG on the PS3 like this since 2006. Just because they're taking a long time to release Versus doesn't mean it doesn't exist. :P

...what? ...Have you even played The 4 Heroes of Light??
I'm pretty sure that game plays the old school formula perfectly.

That music....
Those graphics....
Call me vain, but I don't even care about the gameplay anymore. I just want to ride a dragon Studio Ghibli-style.

I'm a little concerned about the White Knight Chronicles comparison, but yeah, willing to overlook it for the art and music.

I want to burst into the home of every person in that town, talk to them for no explicable reason (and maybe do them a favor), raid their drawers, and go into the overworld to commence the massive murders of many a monsters!

Is it premature to say "already in my all-time top 5"? Unless this thing plays like Sword of Sodan...

Oh pleeeeeeaaasssseee be good! I so want to enjoy playing this but if it's full of annoying pointless combat, which is not what Studio Ghibli films are about at all, then it might just turn out to be a huge dissapointment. Please be good... pretty please!!

Um... I love Studio Ghibli as much as the next anime fanatic, but this is a videogame, not a film. Of course there is going to be a lot of combat. I'm hoping it's not going to be a total grindfest though. I know you said you didn't want "pointless" combat, but you have to level up somehow. This is an RPG. Something tells me that the art design and studio ghibli charm is going to make any combat scenario seem a lot more bearable though. :)

I don't understand the WKC hate. Its offered me a ton of RPG fun I've been missing thanks tot he lack of JRPGs this generation. Yes the characters and story were pretty bland but the online questing and variety of the gameplay made up for it. WKCII has even more to do.

This is one of those rare cases where I will be able to completely overlook slightly lackluster gameplay due to the sheer joy of enjoying the artwork and level design. Level 5 is easily one of my favorite outfits!

Sounds like a fun game! However, in my opinion, this game looks more like Blue Dragon. It looks great, but with a childish twist. I had the same problem with Blue Dragon. It was too simple.

@grazypanda

That's Studio Ghibli's talent. They can make stories that are childish at heart, but still approachable to adults.

Princess Mononoke may be the one of the more "mature" stories they created, but even that had a core that spoke to children.

I consider them the new-age Disney in this respect.

I wish there was a game like this with a more serious tone to it and an adult lead character, but not too serious. An atmosphere sort of like Zelda's -- It isn't too mature and bloody, but it isn't too light either. A game with this graphic style, a tad bit more serious, adult leads, open world, turn based, and a lot of side quests would be amazing in a game.

(Please don't mistake me for saying this game isn't going to be good, it actually looks great... It just had me thinking of what I'd really like to see for RPGs this generation)

@Belial Are you familiar with Ghibli at all? The whole magic of Ghibli is that it has fantastical worlds without adult leads.

@Yatagarasu I don't ever recall saying that I want this particular game to be changed. I was only saying that I wish a game were out this generation that fit the criteria I listed above. The game I'm wishing for doesn't even have to be related to this Ni no Kuni game at all whatsoever.

I wonder why the Japanese take on a evil voice, is just a regular voice that sounds like it's talking through a metal tube?

I never imagined that the Ghibli universe would translate well to three dimensions, or the game world for that matter, but from the outset (and the DS version) this has looked amazing. I think the fact that this is an original title not based on anything makes it so. (Anime games tend to be... kinda bad, especially if they're based on an existing franchise) Anyway, can't wait to play this.
