Rage requires 3 discs on Xbox 360, 8GB install on PS3, tolerance from fans

Rage will span three discs on Xbox 360 and require an 8GB install on PS3, id Software creative director Tim Willits has confirmed. It was rumored that Rage would have a large install and multiple discs on 360, but it seemed as if id was leaning toward a slim-and-trim two-disc set, stating that a separate multiplayer disc-swap would be "fail." id didn't have to pick a disc number for the PS3 version of Rage, effectively utilizing the Blu-ray drive to hold all of the game's gigs, something that Willits seemed very pleased about:
"Sony was great," Willits said. "Kudos to Sony for letting us do that. They don't allow every game to do that. So definitely, hats off. What we were able to do is install all the textures to the highest level. What is nice about the PS3 platform is that it's just one platform. Everyone has one Blu-ray drive, one hard drive, it's all the same. Some of the other systems you have... should I install it on my 360? Should I not install it? So yes, it's very nice."
For 360 versions, Willits said id recommends installing the game to the hard drive, or if you don't have the space for all 22GB, after installing and finishing the first half of the game from disc one, uninstall it, and then install disc two. There isn't a reason to disc-swap after completing the first half, and "you don't really need to install the multiplayer disc if you're really tight on hard disk space," Willits said.

Multiple discs on the 360 isn't a big deal IF you can just install all the discs to the drive and then play with just the first disc permanently in the tray.
It's the physical act of disc swapping that is so archaic now that is not acceptable. It's stupid. And before anyone jumps in with their "laziness" defense, take the batteries out of your TV remote and start changing channels manually then you can bring it up.
I'll be playing this on the PC anyway.

@arkweld - Your TV remote analogy only works if you're changing TV channels once every 30 hours or so.
They've even said that you'll have hardly any reason to go back to the first disc once you finish it so it's not like you have to get up to change discs every five seconds.

So it's linear and not open world?

@Ballistic H - I have no idea but the article says "There isn't a reason to disc-swap after completing the first half".
This isn't personally a game I'm particularly interested in so I know nothing about its layout or length (re: eNriqeu - I was just throwing out a number to illustrate my point).

Yes it is f'kn stupid. This is the sort of thing we were putting up with 15 years ago and you're telling me that a game cannot be played by a full install of all three discs and then using one for verification purposes - as they've done on PC for over a decade?
And the remote analogy still works. It's irrelevant how many times you have to get up. It's convenience. Do you want to take the batteries out of your remote and go back to manually switching channels and changing the volume even if it's only every hour? No of course you don't, because you know there's a better and more convenient way and you will choose that every time.
Like the concept of wired controllers (or wired remote controls) disc swapping is archaic and ridiculous. Not helped by the Xbox Arcade which needs to die. It's another case of progress being held back by the few who don't want to upgrade.

@arkweld a) No, the way the 360 works is that you need to put in the proper disc just like if you were playing from the disc. All the install does is improve load times.
b) If I have to get up once every 10-15 hours of TV watching to change the channel, it's not the end of the world.
I'd rather have to get up once or twice & get more content in my game than have it cut in half or by two thirds.

@RobertCarr You really should. I upgraded from a 40gb to a 160gb and never looked back. There's an immense feeling of satisfaction going through your entire game collection and installing all the data to your hard-drive, and going through your PSN game list and redownloading everything you own, safe in the knowledge that you'll never have to uninstall any of it ever again.
I've also got a load of PS3 demo discs from my magazine subscription, so I went ahead and installed a tonne of demos from them too. I never play them, I just like having them on my hard-drive. I've even got Pro-pain on there, just for kicks.

i went to buy one once and the only store i within a 2 hour drive that might carry them is best buy in rapids city.. a 2 hour drive away.... well i get there and i see 2.5s and ask a gaming asociate for help and he goes and shows and tells me i need a standard full size hard drive then tells me i can only use 32 gigs of its capacity for the console's storage?
um i should really only need a blank 2.5 and just switch the drives out right?

I was thinking moreso on a performance/graphical standpoint, but margins are pretty close these days on those two fronts. However it is pretty tough to think, 3 discs versus 8 gigs, and yes PS3 does take quite a while to install.
Like I said, doesn't matter, the game was born to rock regardless, at least it looks that way!
