@Ghen

Hey Ghen,

I'd like to port it to Android at some point in the near future. First though I need to grow my install base on the iPhone. It seems marketing games is REALLY hard. Or at least for me. If I can get some interest built up I will port it over and it shouldn't take mopre than a few weeks. I've already done some Android work so it won't be a big deal.

@stiqlol

This is a refreshing take on my interaction with people. Most tend to think negatively of it...

For this, you get a + on your post. :p

And thank you, it is much appreciated. I promise to use your money for beer.

Hey Collin,
I also wish to enter the wonderful world of indie games. I have a programmer and I'm working on some level designs and gameplay mechanics, but I'm having some trouble making art for the game.

How does one make art assets for a game?

Hey Giga,
To be honest that is something I am not good at. I went to Full Sail for game development and I met my artist in final project. Her name is Celes Chang. She did all the art in the game, so she's my partner in the project. On a programming level, the game is essentially a bunch of images (jpegs, bitmaps, I used pngs). The images are loaded in in different ways, I used Cocos2D to develop this and it uses a Sprite object to load images in and display them. For example, if you've checked out the game, the Lodestone itself is a series of 12 images made to repeat one after the other and rotated based on the direction you're moving. But put together it appears to be a rolling colored rock. Let me know if this helps, or if you'd like I can see if Celes can get on here and provide some of her input.

Thanks,
Collin

Hey Collin, saw that you went to Full Sail and just wanted to ask your opinion on it. I live in Dubai at the moment and I'm in my last year of IB. I'm pretty positive I want to go there to take game development. How did you like it? Was it hard to get in? And how is the uni in general?

Thanks!

@Bloodprime

Hey Bloodprime,

I think Full Sail is for a certain kind of person. I didn't go to a traditional University, so it's difficult for me to compare it to other schools. I can say that I learned quite a bit, and I left feeling prepared for what was ahead. I got a job in software development which allows me to do games on the side. Some of my friends work for game companies, some do general software work, but most have gotten jobs. It is the kind of school that if you have the money, you're in. Which I'm personally not against. But once you're in you have to prove yourself. The grading scale is pretty tough and you can't miss school or you automatically fail (for the most part, there are exceptions for emergencies of course). It is a very expensive school, and for some of the degree programs I don't know how they'll ever make their money back. But Game Development is probably their best and most successful program. I don't believe any degree in the world guarantees you a job, but I believe you'll have the skill necessarily to land a job with some effort.

There a lot of forums with talented artists out there as well. Always ask for a portfolio, and always remember to make all your art as polished as you can. You are going against giant publishers on the App Store after all :-).

@collinc

Great job on your game! I've been developing on the app store for a year now, if you ever need some marketing advice feel free to hit me up. I've tried a lot of things and had success and failures.
