I'd say Castlevania is one of the main games that's responsible for turning me into the nerd I am today.

@Faceless Troll

totally agree. my biggest nerd moment with castlevania was playing SotN and finding a monster called Cthulhu....only to be more excited that Malachi actually looked like Chulhu. and yes, I'm a huge lovecraftian nerd since high school.

Can't believe I have been playing these games for 25 years. I still remember my state of awe when I first played Super Castlevania IV and SotN. Those were THE days.

Nice. Guess that was a good timing to play Lords of Shadow I had.

BTW, I read on the Castlevania wikia (http://castlevania.wikia.com/wiki/Castlevania_Wiki) that the Saturn SotN version suffered from a lot of slowdown, being a mere port of the PSOne version instead of making full use of the Saturn superior 2D capabilities.

@TheShaper

I actually played through the whole thing without knowing a lick of Japanese. I don't remember any glaring slowdown, but then I grew up with slowdown :)

My first Castlevania experience was in like '98, at a local pizza place. They had these weird NES arcade cabinets with some really good games. Other than that, I was never allowed to play Castlevania because it was "too dark."

It was around when Aria of Sorrow came out when I was old enough to just go buy one myself, and soon I went back and played through any Castlevania I could get my hands on. Good times!

Happy sort-of-25th, Castlevania.

Mr. Fletcher, thank you for being a true, hardcore fan of the Castlevania series and not only point out these delicious tidbits of the series that are usually unknown by casual gamers, but just for dedicating this article in the first place to our beloved series.

You are doing what Konami isn't - acknowledging this milestone. Kudos from the Castlevania fandom!

Fond memories of playing many Castlevania games over the years. Too many to recount.

It still angers me they didn't include the missing parts of the castle in the PSP version of SOTN. They had a few of the other things missing from the PS1 version (like Maria) but they decided to leave those out. Oh well, maybe they'll include in the next port, if it ever happens.

I have a VHS tape with evidence of my 4 year old self playing CV1 on NES. Who knew that moment in time would solidify the top spot for my favorite game franchise.

I'm a bit fan of Castlevania in general and the Saturn version of SotN was something I imported right away.

I have to say, it's really disappointing. The new areas are small and really just lackluster, in some ways seeming almost comical compared to the others in the game. It might sound weird, but I almost feel like they bring down everything else. They're just not good... although the green house area is the better of the two.

Coupling this with a huge increase in slowdown and crappier transparency effects and it's really not worth the time.

I also, really, really wish Konami would just release their Wiiware Contra and Castlevania titles on 360/PS3. Even just scaling it to run all pixelated on those systems in HD would be fine with me.

The first time I played Castlevania was a trip to Wal-Mart in the Summer of 1987.

While my mom went shopping, she gave me a handfull of quarters. The Wal-Mart had a Nintendo Vs. Unisystem cabinet. One game was Vs. Sky Kid, the other was Vs. Castlevania.

My mom got done shopping, and I didn't wanna leave, I was having such a blast playing Castlevania. A few months later, I saw the NES game at Toys R' Us, and practically begged my mom to buy it.

I did this as well. I remember being really mad at the end of the game because Dracula never really showed up.

Alright, and to kick off the second quarter-century of Castlevania awesomeness, all I ask of Konami is just ONE fully-realized, all-new 2D HD Metroidvania. Heck, I'll even settle for a 2.5D game, but please, please, please, spare me another iteration of "Lords Of Shadow".

I hate this game with a burning passion even rivalling my love for all things SotN-inspired.

I mean, both Lament Of Innocence and Curse Of Darkness tried, in their ways, to be true to the old CV spirit, but the only thing Lords Of Shadow evokes is the pure sense of horror at this gameplay frankenstein. The whip combat? Feels like a cheap God Of War wannabe, only with much poorer hit feedback and lame combos. The exploration element? Watered down Prince Of Persia, and without the genius. Fixed camera angles? Soooooo 2002 and made some passages in Lords Of Shadow nigh unplayable. And don't get me started on that whole "two color magic" system. Apart from spamming blue magic to heal, it was nearly useless. And the puzzles, although some were rather nicely done, mostly revolved around "push block x to point y, rinse, repeat, add wrinkes". And don't get me started on those damned TITAN BATTLES. Ugh. If I want to play that, I'd play Shadow Of The Colossus, thank you.

Return the developement back to IGA and be done with it. Farming out the developement of well-known franchises to other developers only results in bad games. Silent Hill: Homecoming? Front Mission (D)Evolved? I think I proved my point.

Anyways, happy birthday, Castlevania.

Wow, whoever posted the Haunted Castle video never took a hit. I was young but I never got past the first stage in the arcade. That's very impressive.

Also Dracula seemed really easy. I guess the cross helped out there.

You never forget your first. I remember receiving Castlevania II for christmas from my uncle when I was growing up. It was dark, had catchy kickass music, and was one of the lengthier games I played on the NES. I also had fun playing Vs. in Pizza Hut on a table top machine. I've loved them all over the years except for Harmony of Despair, and I for one really enjoyed the new beginning with Lords of Shadows! Again, great music, solid gameplay, and a well told story with an awesome ending!

I love Castlevania. I've played the first the most, and some I still need to get round to playing. I did play Rebirth, but I didn't enjoy it as much as all the others that I've played. I'm really tempted to import Symphony of the Night now - at least, once I eventually get a Saturn.

OK, I have to call BS on saying that Simon's Quest is "hard." It's not. It's actually very easy. To the point where my mother played through it start to finish without help from me back when it came out. My mother doesn't really play many games, let alone something like that, but it caught her attention when I was playing it. Now, the BULL**** factor, yeah, that's up there. The original is more difficult by far than SQ (which, for the record, is still one of the greatest NES games of all time; eff you, Angry Video Game Nerd).

Konami had a hotline with a recorded walkthrough. I don't remember the cost per minute, but I remember holding a cassette player up to phone and recording the whole damn thing. It was INVALUABLE.
