TGS 2011: Cosplayers suffer for their art

Every year, many of Japan's biggest game and anime fans put incredible time, effort and money into creating detailed costumes of their favorite characters. Then, in September, they don those costumes ... and cram themselves into the most crowded, humid place on Earth, a corridor between two halls of the Tokyo Game Show. Seriously, we were wearing regular non-costume clothes and we were sweating at all times.

Join us in celebrating talent, commitment, and unhealthy zeal of these brave cosplayers by perusing our gallery of TGS 2011 cosplay. You'll see that, in Japan, people like the Yakuza games enough to dress up like its characters! Kind of amazing!

You're making the classic mistake of confusing "similar" with "identical."

A lot of women cosplay as male characters. I don't know how many men cosplay as female characters, but I'm sure there are at least a few.

Of greater concern: how terrifying they look.

The Cloud and Solid Snake costumes made me burst out laughing. A few of these blurred the lines between costumes and some sort of horrifying disease that simulates the look of strange clothing.

That guy on the left in the ab shirt is really messing with me.

There is something really wrong going on there, think it might be the drawn on mustache that's killing me.

Just because you don't drive a sports car doesn't mean you can't form a valid opinion on their visual appeal. That said, there are a few cute girls in the lineup, just nothing yowza-inducing.

I respectfully disagree. I, for one, think the girls from picture #23 might be some of the loveliest cosplayers I have ever seen :D

Those who have actually experienced the Yakuza games know that they are incredibly deserving of such displays of fandom. It's one of the best series of this current generation of gaming.

I don't know what cramped area the writers are talking about. The main Cosplay area at TGS is a covered open-air transition similar to a shopping arcade, and it's quite cool in comparison to the show floor. O_o

Awesome, there's a Mathida cosplay from Anarchy Reigns :)

It's not the best looking (and I actually prefer her Madworld outfit) but it's cool to see that someone cosplayed as her.

OMG the Vanille, Fang, and Terra PULLED. IT. OFF. PERFECTLY.

Actually, the Japanese do better cosplaying than in the west. Here's a few examples you might see at anime conventions.

Wow, those are nearly all awesome... not that I recognised any of the characters :)

Well done, cosplayers-of-Japan. (Although, hopefully none of them are actually reading these comments - why do so many people feel the need to be arseholes about cosplay? And no, I don't do cosplay. But respect to those who do.)
