All joking aside, these guys could make some serious money in that industry.

That depends on how much it will cost, and I haven't done any research but it sounds kinda expensive.

True. This is definitely much more complex than a motor spinning a weight, though given how dynamic it is it may be worth the additional cost.

It also opens up a lot of doors for gameplay because vibration patterns can play a part if the fidelity truly is that good.

actually, it sounds like it should be reasonably cheap. sure there was a lot of cost in R&D, but the electro-active polymer can probably be synthesized in bucket scale, likely in only a handful of steps (I have synthesized polymers more complex than what is needed here). Then they only need a thin layer of it, and thin metal to attach it to. frankly it will likely eventually be cheaper than the current tech. my main concerns would be in the polymer lifetime. I don't know how sensitive the polymer is to oxygen and water (the two main sources of organic electronic device degradation).

If water is an issue then my idea to license this tech for vibrating wind up scuba men is totally out the window.

Stranger things have happened. The earliest electric toothbrushes sold incredibly well, in part because it didn't take people long to figure out they could be used for something else.

My old PS2 controller is pretty busted, the buttons work fine but the rumble is like a small heartbeat instead of the usual VRRRRM. It feels very nice too.

I know this technology is very different, but wasn't Immersion doing some pretty advanced rumble stuff?

The big three haven't seemed interested in anything but standard vibrate... but maybe if this consumes less power or, more importantly, is cheaper to implement... then maybe it'll catch on.

One time I left my controller at the table while playing GTA4, It managed to rumble it's way down. Not only that, it also dragged the remote dpwn with it. The remote is broken now......

very interesting technology. i would much appreciate a more nuanced approach to vibration feedback than the existing tech. it is borderline too distracting for me as is and provides no artistic control at the moment...

It's already available for iPod Touch via the Mophie Pulse attachment I mentioned in the article. Beyond that, AM is talking with companies to incorporate it into other products.

Last game i've played with rumble on was.....I think Final Fantasy XII. (which is fairly recent since I had finally bought a Playstation 2 for my birthday last December) Rumble was never a defining feature in video games and I don't think it ever will be with technological advances.

It always amazes me when, after playing a game for 5 or 10 hours, I go into the "settings" menu for something and see Vibration listed. For a split second I think "Hey, I should turn that on!", then quickly realize it's been on the entire time.

Whoever owns the patents has gotten extremely rich on a tech that really adds nothing. It's doubly amusing that Sony tried to get rid of it and people flipped out!

The one thing I missed from going from Xbox TF2 to PC TF2 was the rumble. It was a good indication that you were being injured even if you couldn't hear or see what was happening. Yes, you can use a 360 controller on the PC, but I'd just get murdered by everyone not using one.

It would be awesome to have a mouse with this, or a keyboard with WASD as "rumble" keys.
