EA trotting out Need for Speed: The Run demo October 18

You'll have the opportunity to sample Need for Speed: The Run's signature combination of dramatic racing sequences and inexplicable on-foot excursions in a demo on October 18. It's running out in advance of the game's November 15 release date.

According to EA, the sample places you behind the wheel of a Lamborghini Gallardo LP 550-2 Valentino Balboni, in a desert setting. Additionally, you'll somehow get access to an in-game 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S if you "refer a friend" to the demo -- we're asking EA for details of that odd promotion.

Can't wait, I had a lot of fun with Hot Pursuit.

PS3 players will get it 10 hours after PC and 360 players.

What makes you think PC players will be getting any love?

Hmmm, comes out at the same time as Skyrim. Deceiding which one to grab won't be hard, though. If Black Box needed to make this as cinematic as possible, why not just make a movie?

@Roflrex I didn't say "day", I said "time" like in "a time where I'll have money to burn on games". And since my budget is only big enough for one full-price-I-need-that-NAO-game a month, it's gonna be Skyrim.

I guess need for speed is going into the adventure genre.

@bxgt Still a racing game, but has on foot elements. The concept of racing across the US, not to come in first in every race, but to get to a certain place, sounds pretty cool... like a more thought out racing campaign mode. The on foot stuff ... I dunno, I'm thinking it'll be lame, but hoping it isn't.

I would be pleased if they implemented a Mirrors Edge on foot type system ... simplified, point to point, as exciting as a car race. But, it's probably just stupid.

Funny how the Driver series went back to its roots of just being behind a wheel and then another franchise tries to go outside the box.

The execution might make it great, but in a couple years we'll hear about Need for Speed going back to "what made it great in the first place".

Still pretty interesting. I think they should have rebranded it as a different game and drop the Need for Speed thing altogether.

@Truant Lets be honest, brands sell. Modern Warfare was nothing like its WW2 brothers, but the branding helped it move copies. It a world of Sequels and branding we live in.

Wish i could play with a Porsche in Forza Motorsport 4 but i'll manage.

Dude, on behalf of NFS players everywhere, I'm sorry. That's a seriously dickish licensing deal. I wish EA would just rely on awesome gameplay to distinguish their racing titles, but considering some of NFS' history that probably wouldn't be a safe bet.

I mean really, there aren't so many cross-platform racing sims that it's hard to compete. They have what, the Shift games, to compete with Forza? And...that's it. Completely asinine.

@TheBrainninja F1 is cross platform and very sim, GT5 of course too. I don't know why EA couldn't have just made NFS Most Wanted Part 2, Most Wanted was the most fun I ever had with an NFS game and I started playing them back with the first one for PC.

Thing is, as much as I love racing Porsches this EA exclusive license deal doesn't tempt me in the least to go buy NFS. I'm assuming the intent of having the exclusive Porsche content was to attract gamers to their franchise. Trouble is, none of the NFS titles are sim-racing caliber. And since they aren't sim-racers, they don't really compete with the Forza's and the GT's of the world. So it doesn't make much sense to withhold Porsche content from those games because they attract a completely different audience.

If you refer enough people to the demo you will unlock the porshe 2012 in the full game all Ea demos lately have had a refer a friend unlock something in full game gimmick..

Sorry but if it's a racing game then awesome, but everything I've seen has pretty pretty horrible. I'll wait to pass judgement til I play the demo but all I can think about is the e3 clip where it was some random guy running and you pushing x or y at random times. That part alone is almost reason enough for me to have no interest in the game.

The refer a friend works the same way as it does in the Madden and NCAA demos. They give you an option on the homepage to refer a friend to the game, which sends a message to your friend(s) over XBL/PSN. When you do that, it unlocks the special feature.
