And yet, the SDK will still end up crippled for indie devs.

I wonder how much of these engines will change and their direction if Sony and Microsoft announces that their next generation consoles aren't powerhouses.

Will they develop these powerhouse engines for solely the PC and Mac? Maybe, who knows.

This division in PC and Consoles is very welcomed by me. I want each console to take a different approach to gaming, something unique. Kinect, Move, touchpad-based controls, etc. are just the beginning. In addition, I can keep my traditional style of gaming on my PC.

@xiLeShadow no just no, kinect move etc just don't cut it, console gamers will want power in next generation or it will not justify buy of a new "hardcore" console. i want new consoles in core to be focused on only approach to gaming simple controller as it is today, all motion controls can be extra just a s today. i predict next gen will be nothing new just more power and more of steaming\media stuff. PC gaming is ok buy moving traditional gaming only to this platform kinda sucks . For me my consoles are jack of all trades: it can do AAA titles AND J-rpgs, yeh maybe AAA titles don't look so good on console compared to PC but i don't care about super graphics anyway, level of console pretty games is enough to me

I was thinking that this means that we won't be seeing new consoles until fall of 2013 and then games for it will be coming in 2014.

surely epic will want to cash in on the consoles

I'm not a fan of how Microsoft is handling Kinect, but the idea is amazing and with more advanced technology, it can do pretty well.

Also one note, and it hurts. The casual and "non-"hardcore"" market outnumbers that of the "hardcore" market. You can easily see that with how the first-parties are handling their games.

--Creating more family friendly games.
--Making games easier to play and marketing the game to wider audience.

If you think about it, the traditional games are no longer that traditional. Everything is swinging towards that wider approach except a few games.

The new consoles will evolve that.

Rumor is that Microsoft doubled the RAM of the Xbox 360 specifically because Epic Games asked them to when they were developing Gears of War.

I wouldn't doubt it. I'm pretty sure Microsoft and Sony will want to launch a console that is profitable on day one.

In addition, the standard for a considered "next-generation" has been lowered by Nintendo and their Wii U. All Microsoft and Sony need to do is release a console that looks a tad bit better than the Wii U and the majority of the console market will be pleased.

I'm expecting the new consoles to be at most, 5 times more powerful than the current consoles. A good step compared to current-generation but that is only half the power of today's PCs.

Maybe Microsoft and Sony will release slightly upgraded versions to their current console though. Using hardware developers already know how to program for, etc. I can also see this happening.

@dagamer34 It's actually a fact, Epic is the reason why the Xbox360 has 512MB of RAM =) I'm glad MS listen to them.

This isn't a first. It's already heavily rumored/implied the only reason Nintendo is releasing the second analog nub thing is because Capcom straight up told them "We don't want to do The Claw again. No Monster Hunter without a second analog." And with Monster Hunter being the biggest thing in Japan, Nintendo had to do what they said, because going without Monster Hunter would hurt them bad. MH is what kept the PSP alive as long as it has, despite it being viewed as mostly having a worthless library elsewhere.

I like how every Joystiq update ends with the kind of snide remark I would usually make in the comments section.

2014 sounds a bit far, I would have expected mid 2013. But maybe the games will come out 2014. And for all his hope, the next gen engine will primarily be locked into what the next consoles can do. PC first gaming is practically dead and the market is so fragmented now with sooo many configuarations of processors and over hald the OS user base locked to a maximum of 3GB of RAM, not to mention the top graphics cards being ridiculously over priced and being promoted touting their ability to use two at a time(!), no one is going to make the PC title that stomps over what a console can do.

I am a PC gamer, and I'm fine with being 'limited' to what consoles can do (because that's about all my laptop can do!). I'm just not sure where the full ability of Unreal 4 can ever be seen if he's thinking ahead of where PS4 will be. Is there even any point in designing an engine that can do things the PS4 won't be able to?

I'm in no big hurry for fully realized human-experience-simulator computers. Once they start learning from our gaming behaviors, it won't be long before they are reacting to other behaviors.
With enough processing power, your Kinect (or whatever it will be), will be able to see what you're snacking on when you pause the game. Oh, yeah, and paused screens are gonna have sales ads targeted right at YOU!!!

Anyway, this was all meant to warn against the impending Skynet takeover. But now I'm just depressed thinking about it.

"These advancements will help achieve "movie quality graphics" since that outcome has been limited primarily by horsepower."

And even if horsepower isn't a problem, there's only going to be a handful of studios with the talent and budget about to deliver these graphics. Much like now, how we can have both Modern Warfare 3 and X-Men Destiny coming out in the same quarter.

What we really need is a better workflow for creating these amazing graphics so the whole process isn't so expensive and you don't need to sell 60 squazillion units to offset the development cost; maybe we could even use some of that left over money for the gameplay experience like better AI

So stupid that millions of people will purchase the product.

Sweeney may mold how the sales of engines has come to fruition, but he's very low man on the totem of good engines. Carmack is on top for a very good reason. Look at Rage, and it's hilariously low system requirements on PC for how good it looks. Or that the console versions look almost exactly the same. (But yes, I know they require a sizeable install, it is a port from PCs here guys) Crytek is above UE3 as well, despite them not having the best idea of how to actually make a game with it.

I'd say that on the whole 4A Engine (Metro 2033) is better than UE3 too, and still one of the only games to use working global illumination, which saddens me because it makes such a vast difference. UE3 and CryEngine 3 sorta support it, but very poorly and most UE3 games explicitly block it.

Unreal can't really stand to wait until 2014, especially if CryEngine 4 is going to start being released. (Which was implied in Homefront 2 reveal)

this is all true but where Unreal excels is that it already has the support of so many developers. So many people are comfortable with Unreal and so many studios have licensing deals with epic already.

Yea, iDTech 5 is going to kick everyone's ass. On the other hand, you may like Crytek's engine better for some reason, but as middleware goes it's kind of a joke. They're already on their third one and how many developers have decided to license it? I'm sure they're out there but I haven't heard of any. Compare that to UE3's list of games and you'll start to realize Tim Sweeney's not such a small fish after all.

Btw, am I the only one laughing at the implication of "using 20 cores?" Since PCs only use 8 in the most top of the line CPU, and consoles are still using one, which I don't expect to change in the next gen of consoles. UE3 development is primarily for consoles, and a rogue few games that are console centric games that come to PC. (Mass Effect, Borderlands)

@Jennacide If he is speaking in reference to consoles, he might be referring to GPGPU stuff, something they might be considering. a hybrid CPU/GPU is probably something they will want to go for if they can, and GPUs have wa~y more cores than a traditional CPU.

If you want to get technical, tip-top of the line PCs can actually handle 12 cores, 24 if you have a dual CPU system on, for example, an extended ATX board. Yes, it's kind of overkill for just gaming, but there's nothing far-fetched about 20+ core consumer-level cpus being on the horizon.
