I don't want to beat a dead horse too much, but Justin really does deserve to be mocked for that Nier 'review' at every opportunity. At least until he fesses up and apologizes for it.

He spent hours fishing in the *wrong spot*, which he could possibly blame the game for if it didn't have a giant red X on your map telling you where to go just like every single other objective in the game...but it *did*. Furthermore you didn't even have to learn the fishing minigame. If you failed more than a couple of times it just gave you the damn fish, and any further fishing was completely optional. Of course that only applies if you're in the right location to begin with.

That isn't a review fail, it's a reviewer fail.

It doesn't matter who's reviewing this. It's a pile of crap, and a horrible idea at that, no matter how you look at it.

The flip side to this thought is that even if the game really does suck, Justin is still the worst reviewer on the site.

@JustinMcElroy Justin, did you come across any hard locks, audio glitches, AI freezing (where the enemies just stopped moving), fall through any geometry? I'm playing the 360 version and I get nothing but that.

Of course. You can tell by his rude, obnoxious, pretentious, cynical, jaded, hipster mentality. All his reviews read the same. I would bet he didn't even finish the game. Wouldn't be the first time he wrote a nerd-enraged review without completing the game.

@Kevadu I disagree. If a game poorly presents an objective and then makes up for it's bad mechanics and lack of clarity by simply handing you the objective (the fish), that's pretty bad game design.

As far as Nier goes, would I have given it a 0? Probably not, but Justin has every right to do so. Who cares about the "complete game" if you can't make it past the finishing mini-game to see it?

Every single time I see you post, you're railing against hipsters that demand games have little things like well drawn characters and interesting stories.

Maybe you're just stupid.

@wrongThinker I don't understand this post at all. Up to the point of the fishing quest, EVERY objective had been highlighted by a GIANT RED "X".

How is being too daft to grasp that and fish in the wrong spot any fault of the game?

Also, his credibility, I wonder about after he gave Dead Island a rather scathing review.

He reminds me of MIck LaSalle of the SF Chronicle when reviewing movies...50% of the time he's dead-on, the other 50% his reviews are off.

Yeah, with this flop, the last well recieved game they put out was the MGS remake for the Gamecube back in 2004.

I tried really, really hard to like Too Human, but it was exceedingly boring, imho. Looks like this is more of the same, only worse.

Moment of silence for what? The only ever made one geniuely good game, and one decent game that started a good franchise. (Eternal Darkness and Blood Omen, respectively) Even at it's best moments both games had issues, but at least ED had enough interesting stuff to make you forget them. Blood Omen had some irritating issues, but gave birth to Soul Reaver 1 & 2, and Defiance, which were great. (Let's pretend Blood Omen 2 didn't happen.) Same for GRIN, they didn't make anything spectacular. GRAW 1 was merely passable, and Rearmed is hardly their doing as it's a straight remake with fancier graphics.

It's not like we're talking about SE here, a company that used to be god tier, and had a huge fall from grace.

@RobertCarr I wish it wasn't but it will be for a couple of reasons a) it's in an area of Ontario outside Toronto (St. Catherines) therefore on top of the regular tax incentives that all gaming companies recieve it recieves a lot of tax incentives locally for the jobs it brings in to the city and tax incentives for it's work with the local colleges b) it's a plumb of development in Ontario, it has several relationships with schools and government that will at least for a while allow funding to be pumped in.

So while I hate for anyone to loose their jobs and even more so for Canadian companies to go under this company is in serious need of some revision to it's vision.

Unfortunately that won't happen because the only thing Denis Dyack seems to be good at is convincing my stupid Government into giving his dysfunctional studio more funding:

http://www.develop-online.net/news/38233/Silicon-Knights-to-hire-80-after-govt-funding

Despite this seemingly crappy game (and you know they knew it was crappy as there were no early review copies) and their last crappy game they are growing (!) Yet actual good studios close all the time...

Dyack has been described by former employees as a lawsuit-happy hack, and previously he was able to take credit for other people's creative efforts. Now that his reputation in the industry is well-established, people of ability and experience prefer to seek employment elsewhere.

This is the end result.

Given that Blood Omen came out in 1996 and Eternal Darkness in 2002, this should have been said a while ago. I know people love to give them credit for MGS:Twin snakes, but the story was already written and the gameplay mechanics were created with MGS2 two years prior by Konami. All they had to do was churn out a MGS2 clone in a sense, but even with more superior hardware, it was riddled with framerate issues, bad AI, and just an overall poor art direction. IMO, it's been 10 years since they put anything good out.

Their track record was actually quite impeccable before Too Human sir. Before that they developed some of the best games on the Gamecube and PC.

And since Too Human they've developed one game.....this one. There's still plenty of time to turn the company around.

@NaeemTHM There is so much turnover in the game industry that a company of two years ago is often not the same company it is now. In many cases, it's unreasonable to look at past success as a gauge, unless the company has done a good job of retaining its talent.
