An officially licensed Xbox 360 controller that also, officially, works on the PS3? Is this a first?

@Mike Kelehan No, the last one (911 GT3 wheel) did too.

@Mike Kelehan

That's unusually smart of them. People are far more likely to by one if they can use it for multiple games and systems.

@spin cycle Wait, I meant the 911 Turbo S wheel. I think the GT2 wheel was also, but I can't be sure. I forgot which Fanatec wheel I owned.

@SisypheanLife It's smart except it makes the wheel very expensive because MS wants so much licensing money. It makes it so the wheel is not cost effective unless you are going to use it on an Xbox, few who want it primarily for PC and PS3 would buy it since the price is so high.

For example you can get a Logitech G27 for $200 and it works on PC and PS2/3. This is $460. And you can say this is better, and in several ways it is, but the price is disproportionate.

@spin cycle You don't know what you're talking about. Both the wheel and pedals have a variety of exclusive features (detailed on the web site) and are used by plenty of PC and PS3 people. People around the internet all agree it's way better than the Logitech.

@jsx92 Wow, people all around the internet? How could I argue with them?

Oh wait, maybe I could because I own both?

Personally, mine 911 Turbo S isn't better than the G25, even though it costs more. This is because the shifter on the Fanatec is completely useless. COMPLETELY. The mounting bars are a joke and the shifter mechanism is godawful, it feels like a toggle switch.

Additionally, my pedals are plastic, and although they are very good for plastic pedals, they are still plastic and cannot match the G25 pedals. Now, I do note that the clubsport pedals for the Fanatec are much better than the G25/G27 pedals. However, they alone cost more than I paid for my entire G25 setup. The pedals on this will likely be somewhere between the G25 pedals and the clubsport pedals on quality and lower in cost than the clubsport.

Anyone who bought a Fanatec 360-licensed wheel to use only on PC and/or PS3 is a nut, because you paid too much. Even if you want to stick with the Fanatec family, buying the non-360 compatible GT3 RS wheel will save you $170 over the GT2 wheel (both clubsport, difference is $70 with no pedal models).

I stand behind my statement that making a wheel which supports all 3 platforms is not a slank dunk because 360 compatibility adds to much to the price of your product, and this feature adds nothing to PC or PS2/PS3 users. Fanatec's own pricing backs up my statement.

@spin cycle
So... if I want a wheel that works with PS3/X360/PC, I should pick up the Logitech ones?

Nope, there aren't any Logitechs that work with both 360 and PS3.
Spincycle's comments are pretty much spot on, although I'd argue that the MS licensing doesn't add that much price to the Fanatec products as Fanatec products are very expensive anyway.
They are very good, however!

@foxhound No, they don't work because Logitech doesn't pay MS licensing fees. If you want a wheel that works on all 3, you will have to either do without, buy multiple wheels or pay the extra for the compatible Fanatec model.

My point just was that for those who don't need 360, the price increase is just a tax that doesn't do them any good. If you need the 360 compatibility, the Fanatec makes sense. Well, as long as you're okay with spending $350+ on a wheel in the first place.

The items listed are not all made from aluminum parts. My Fanatec wheel has the same case and it's plastic. The shifter I have is also plastic, the new one doesn't look any different except for a metal handle on it, the mechanism itself likely still feels like a cheap plastic clicky switch.

As another warning, "pre-order" with Fanatec often turns into months of wait. I waited about 7 months for my wheel, I ordered it well before Forza 3 came out and it didn't show up until a while after the game came out.

In the end, the wheel is very good, the shifter is awful (useless really and the mounting is dismal, get the optional mounting if you really must get the shifter at all, I don't recommend it) and the pedals I got were good. This wheel has new pedals which likely are even better.

Good point on the pre-order wait times. They have been saying regularly that with this edition of peripherals they are hoping to have a lot more stock than they have had historically with other gear.

I have the GT2/ClubSport Pedals... they come highly recommended, but note that Fanatec is in Germany and their shipping process has, in the past, been notoriously bad. Supposedly this new partnership with Forza has led to improvements in that area. My wheel and pedals look, feel, and work great; however the RennSport Wheelstand (made by Fanatec) leaves a lot to be desired.

They have been available for pre order for almost 2 weeks. I bought the three items. Hopefully the pre orders aren't sold out ;)
