French SoulCalibur 5 match videos prove that you're already unprepared
43
One of the universal truths of the fighting-game world is that at all times, someone out there is better than you, no exceptions. It's a sure thing, so much so that this cosmic natural law even applies to games that aren't even out yet, as is evident by the SoulCalibur 5 Astaroth v. Ivy match video above.
It's nice to know that even though the bright, cheerful announcer we've come to know and love has been replaced by a gruff, melancholy fellow, matches are still followed by confusing and non-sequitur one-liners about justice and victory. Slide past the break for a few more videos showcasing the new fighters and reworked mechanics. Welcome back to the Stage of History; now eat it!

The first video is a good match, I think that's Malek, one of the best Ivy from France.

Oh its good to see Maxi in action, i was always Maxi in SC2 and 3. They nerfed him from IV onwards and changed his combos, but its good to see someone use him nearly as well as i could. Pretty disappointed he lost :(

Not feeling how Astaroth sounds. "Silence you maggot" :( But I do like how the announcer sounds in this one :)

To be honest, this could all have been DLC for Soul Calibur IV.

@xpander2k I'll agree with you, what did they changed, because it looks like the same game I played in 2008 or whenever it came out... ugh can't they add anything cooler or at least make the game look better graphically... MK spoiled me and set my expectations too high for fighters now

maxi still looks a little off his A game. I like the idea of run counters and i wish i had seen more of these critical break move thingys, astaroth totally jumped out of ivys but maybe i should watch again, i wanna see how she didn't connect with it

Something I'm noticing is that the series is trying to emulate more traditional fighters as time goes on, and I'm not entirely sure how I feel about that.

I'm not a fan of it either. For some reason the creators think you have to have super-combos to make a successful fighting game. I don't really agree.

They always seem to make very little improvement/innovation between SC games, and yet they still keep making em, which I guess means that someone buys them. I didn't even bother with 4, after playing the PSP one with Kratos. The Western voice acting in this game (as with the rest of the series) is atrocious, Astaroth in particular sounds comically bad.
Also, is that the Star Trek Voyager title font they're using for all of the "Battle 1, Fight!" title card stuff?

I just think Astaroth should sound more menacing instead of a drill instructor.

I was wondering if it was just because of the kind of game Soul Calibur is. I think that first Astaroth was pretty good. The Patroklos in particular was underwhelming.

Even with the new characters, three things about namco always make me scared.
this trailer/video shows every reason why fighting games have declined- their makers are loath to change much of anything, even with years in between releases. Unlike the crap talkers, ive loved every release, even with the lack of options in turning off that ridiculous armor break system that promoted fast attack spamming- man i hated that sh*t.
1- OLD assets permeating through.- i mean come on, these dudes cant create new standing animations? that's just pathetic. besides a new move or something, this looks no different from part 4. the movement---> stopping animation is still clunky, which affected how precise you could be.
2- no new level ideas. after the burning mansion and the ship in a storm, these guys have given up. call the mvc3 producers and get a clue. same background style for 10 years- even some fake 3d thrown in! oh a gate falls, yay. How can these guys get so corny? for heaver sakes, make soem bricks come off a wall. gold coins spill. doors bust open. fall on one of the ducks thats usually around. if you are surrounded by water, where are th ebig splashes?
3- support, extras, new levels and stuff- if we know namco, they are cheapest guys in he world. they didnt support the last game and dont expect them to support this one. My money is on locked characters on the disk, ala yoda/darth vader
couple others:
- where the f is dante already? Kratos?
- whats the safeguards against people who spam mitsurugi? lord knows there was a friggin army of those losers. And the losers who became good with them...hurts just to think about them talking mess. There is such a thing as too fast. The umbrella girl was fast, but her move set was nowhere as lengthy and with her you had to get in close.
- did i mention the misturigi spammers? oh, yeah….
- weapons choices are less and less with every version. and the old system stinks, give us something new.
- side dodging have been broken for the last 2 or 3 releases. I dont hav hope for this getting fixed.
- character creation rocked, just not enough items.
im going to just write a review of this game myself when it comes out. bah.

I was a huge fan of SC2 but was a little disappointed in 3 & 4. Ditching that fruity announcer is a huge plus for me. I might come back for 5.

I suppose I have some better moves than the guy using Mitsurugi versus Tira. Did not impress me at all.

I think these games bore me. I think MK is way better even before this last MK game. they play faster. these characters feel like they are walking in mud and the music sounds like japanese/renaissance garbage music. (don't get me wrong i love the japanese.. sometimes their music sounds a little corny for my ears though)
the whole feel of this game is just like.. the same as its always been. the part i like most about the game is the tits and that has nothing to do with gameplay or playing. (with the game that is).

@ecliptic MK is a completely different type of fighter game or was. I think the new MK is more like a side scrolling Tekken game with this new combo system. I really loved the combo system in MK3/MK3U; however I rather play SC or SF with those mechanics. Worse thing about MK9 is the lag - It's been a loooong time since a game had made me want to actually break my own shit in a flat out nerdrage temper tantrum!
On topic, I like the new voice work in the game, imo the old voice work made the game almost unplayable with sound, and a fighting game with no sound is unplayable.

Wait, it is just my imagination that Ivy is more covered up, and possibly even has slightly less ginormous boobs, than the last game? I thought it was an ironclad law of the universe that she had to go more over the top with her top each game! I was expecting her to have a wheelbarrow this time to carry her S-cup breasts in, and a string bikini literally consisting of string.
Posted: Oct 1st 2011 11:46PM The Blank Mage Returns said
@The Deuce Well, SC4 actually had her more covered than usual, and her age makes it a bit weird, in my opinion. She might have to pass the torch at some point. Besides, the costumes in each new SC are getting more and more ridiculous. Just look at Tira; I have no idea what I'm looking at there, let alone turned on by it. (Staying classy, Blank.)
Personally, I have since turned my hopes for absurdly well endowed fighting characters to the new Mortal Kombat games.

Damn! The Astaroth player is good. Noob tip for Ivy, try button mashing. hehe j/k. It was funny to see she did the same special move near the end, but was kill anyway during the second attempt.

I played this at the MCM expo and it was fun and all.
The two new character they let us try (the new blonde taki and the emo guy) were both pretty fun though for some reason we could not play the new orb using girl even though the tourny guys could.
Also the super move (the red firey one) seems busted, a friend 1 shot me using it with voldo from near full health to dead in one hit, maybe it was a bug.
That said, I probably will not buy this, apart from new characters it didn;t feel different enough.
