Have yet to see Flash supporting 64bit browsers, which they STILL haven't brought out yet. Flash sucks btw, HTML5 is where it's at.

Why would you WANT UT3 on either format? This is entirely a proof of concept. And funny story, unless Epic is doing it, highly unlikely anything will use the entire capabilities of this. It'll just be used to make prettier versions of FarmVille, which, guess what, CAN be made in HTML5.

Why would anyone want a browser based Unreal Tournament 3?

Because that would be pretty awesome. I'd love a free to play UT3 in the vein of Quake Live that I can access from any computer.

Actually its not proof of concept. This is one of the directions for Flash for the future, HTML5 is taking up (and rightly so) some of the more simple and basic things Flash has done for so long and so Flash is pushing on deeper into even more complex things. The reason why a complex 3D game in a browser is a good idea is simple; it's easy to get to. You would no longer be tied down to a console, or a PC where you have installed a game, you'd just log in to your gaming website and play through the browser.

Unity has also jumped on the Flash 11 wagon, and full Nintendo Wii games have already been successfully converted to run with Flash.

As for "HTML5 can already do this" that is untrue. HTML5 can do SOME of the things that Flash can do but even then it suffers from performance issues and the good ol' cross browser issues. Flash, despite being a plug-in made by a money obsessed company, is still the best creative environment on the web.

So....

http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/02/quake-ii-gwt-port-proves-html5-isnt-just-for-video/3

HTML5 has a bit more power than just being able to remake FarmVille. While the demo is pretty awesome, it all depends on the developer (in this case EPIC) wanting to get their tech to work on a given medium.

It's worth pointing out that this is very clearly a last ditch effort by Adobe to save Flash's emminent demise. It was bad enough Apple constantly refuses to allow it on their mobile devices, but now Microsoft has also denounced it from Win8 Mobile, citing it as too big a security risk. And with HTML5 able to do most of the same shit Actionscript can do before this release, Flash is about to go the way of Java applets, few and far between.

Not that that's a bad thing. Both Java and Flash are notorious for being giant gaping security holes, with only some redeeming value anymore.

Adobe doesn't make any money selling plugins tho, they sell the Flash development tools. All they need to do is target HTML5 instead of their plugin. I imagine it's just a large technical challenge to do so. Some stuff is simply not possible in HTML5 though.

You're obviously not a developer. We build in both Flash and HTML, and recently HTML5. We've done a few HTML5 pieces for clients that demand it and have found that the HTML5 pieces eat as much or MORE CPU than the Flash versions, and render different in each of the 3 major browsers (latest versions), where the Flash version is completely consistent. Yes, we're using the latest versions of JQuery and all the best hacks/shims/polyfills that are available. We're talking projects that were possible in Flash 6-7 years ago.

HTML5 simply is not suitable for 90% of what Flash can do right. Sure, for the most basic 10%, have at it.

Apparently I am daft, my apologies for insulting your mother...wait...no...why are you so butt hurt again? I truly haven't kept up with HTML5.

My point is in the context this was meant to be in (this replied into the air for some reason): HTML5 can do many things, but today it cannot dream to produce anything of higher quality consistently across computers with 3D as Flash 11 can/will be able to with ease. Adding in UE3 makes it no contest.

Sure there will be your HD Farmvilles and such, but it also means real and deep experiences can be possible without making the computer chug or compromising multitasking. HTML5 and the Flash 10.3 and below depend most on your CPU rather than your GPU, unlike Flash 11+. Meaning there's only so much an HTML5 page can have going on before it interferes with other things running on your computer. Flash 11 with or without UE3, by moving the graphical processing to the GPU, allows you to do other things with a great high quality game running in the background waiting for you and not interfering with your computers processing speed.

Can...your...precious...HTML5...do...that?

Those are the best examples you have? Angry Birds is extremely simple technically. Doesn't scratch the surface of Flash's capabilities. And ro.me? Really? Only works in Chrome? And eats so much CPU on my 2010 MBP that the framerate drags to a halt? Is this the 90s where stuff only works in one browser? C'mon, that is not progress. This is regression several years back.

Btw, didn't you know that Rovio is going to release its next Angry Birds on Flash Player 11? Basicly they're running 2D graphics on gpu using Stage3D. They claim it supports more particles they ever had before.

Say what you want about Flash, its security holes or it's impending doom by the hands of HTML5 and Apple, from a technology standpoint the is pretty damn impressive. I wonder which corners were cut where to make it run this smoothly on Flash, yet still look this damn impressive.
I'm seeing a whole new world of beautiful online games, wasted hours in IT classes and completely ridiculous promotional websites on the horizon.
