The opening statements were priceless. I had Spider-Man PJs (and underwear) too. Great review.

I almost closed the tab after the intro. It'd be nice if once in a while a video game blogger could refrain from inserting his or herself into the narrative, especially a preview or review. It's superfluous twaddle the blogger spent more time honing than sequent paragraphs, in a narcissistic attempt to be snarky, witty, and too-clever-by-half.

I think your standards a just a little too high when it comes to video game reviews.

I like it when a reviewer adds a more conversational tone to their reviews. Both Joystiq and Destructoid are really good at this. Even if their attempt to be snarky and witty falls on its face, it's still better than a "by the books" review where the reviewer looks at nothing but the technical aspects of the game. That's just boring.

Why don't you take your business elsewhere then? You "almost" closed the tab and yet you took the time to whine about it in the comments session? If you don't like Joystiq's reviews, there are a lot of bland, stale, "imparcial" reviews and reviewers out there could make even Chrono Trigger sound boring.

Actually, if you like Joystiq's humor tone, why do you even bother opening tabs with it at all?

@ItchyBarracuda Many other reviews gave the game a 80+ out of 100 score. Since Joystiq's score deviates from the general consensus, I consider this review null and void.

@Heffer Wolfe

I'm all for a reviewer adding there personal tone into a review and not just being about the technical aspect, but the problem with game reviewers like joystiq and destructoid when adding that tone doesn't help someone like me know whether the game on a technical level is worth picking up or leaving alone.

Game reviewers need to have the technical aspects in and then add personal opinions at the end on how they felt playing the game, because not everyone is going to hate or love a game based on the technical aspects, personally I love spider-man edge of time i feel like Beenox fixed camera issues that they had with spider-man shattered dimensions.

however not playing it long enough (due to dark souls) i don't know if there are other issues that i would run into that would drive me nuts, i do feel like this is a step in the right direction to make a spider-man game that would be worth playing for everyone and not just fans of the comic book series.

For the record, the game based off of the 2nd Spider-Man game had all of those free-webbing and web-zip-line attacks that Web of Shadows had... Years before. (So did Ultimate Spider-Man!!) To forget that game (SM2) is to forget the best representation of Spider-Man in a video game ever. I really REALLY hope they go back to that game-type soon and forgo the whole apocalyptic symbiote thing (which was kind of neat for a story) and just go straight up balls out Spider-Man going around a city and trying to uncover what a series of villains are up to. PLEASE!

Balls out Spider-Man was "Maximum Carnage".

I didn't know comics as a youth. This series...I knew.

The game...I knew even more.

Right, I did enjoy the Maximum Carnage game A LOT. However the source material... The actual comic series... Not so much. Recently I re-read it and it definitely did not stand the test of time. I started out okay but ended with Captain America trying to combat Shriek's control over regular citizens with, like, love and happiness and peace or some garbage like that.

A much better team-up series from around the same time was Revenge of the Sinister Six which had team-ups with the FF, Nova, Hulk, Ghost Rider and others.

The core game for Spider-Man 2 was just so bad though! The web-slinging free-roam was really the only part of that game that was fun, as soon as you encountered a mission or side mission, the game fell apart into poorly designed boredom.

At least with Just Cause and Just Cause 2, games that are often accused of having the same problems, the free-roam aspect of the game is much more comprehensive. There's so much more to do than swing around with your grappling hook, even if you avoid every mission in the game.

But totally, I'd love to see a good Spider-Man free-roamer again! Just one with things to do and see.

Nothing stands the test of time when you aren't watching X-Men cartoons, eating coco-puffs in a giant bowl, and don't have a goddamn worry in the world on a Saturday morning.

I may be describing a large population of current Joystiq readers at this moment. Wait 10 years.

The game was not perfect (I mean, it had like 3 different types of side missions... How many ballons can the whole population of NYC kids lose in a day?!), but the challenges (or whatever they were called) were good, combat was satisfying, free-roaming was awesome in its purest form and the main missions had some originality to them. All in all, the only thing rotten about the game were the side missions, which you can just ignore (but of course, as a gamer, you CAN'T ignore). Had Activision added more variety to them (A LOT MORE) and decreased their "appearance ratio", that wouldn't have been a good game, it would have been a great game.

And to this day, I still consider buying Spiderman 3 for current gen, which I can probably find for like a buck.
