So this is ... weird.
Halo.fr received a press release for the French version of the novel Halo: Cryptum, and it mentions a forthcoming Halo movie in development with Steven Spielberg and Dreamworks.
Now, we've gotten better than a greedy mortician at ignoring signs of life from the oft-revived and killed-off Halo movie, and would have been more than happy to dismiss this as a misinformed publicist or hopeful copy editor. But it's a little harder in this case. The blurb mirrors a report from Vuture that Dreamworks was considering adapting the books, avoiding some of the legal cruft gathered around the video game-to-movie adaptation. Ready for the weird part? We ran the story on the Vulture piece exactly one year ago today.
Spooky, right? We suspect the interference of ghosts, but we've contacted the novel's US publisher and Microsoft in the hopes of finding our for sure.
[Update: We heard back from Tor, which publishes Halo books stateside. It doesn't work with French publisher Milady directly, but was unaware of any movie version of Halo in the works. That's not a denial per se, but if it was happening, you can bet Tor would have heard about it.
Update 2: And now, a post from 343 Industries' Frank O'Connor on NeoGAF, which reads "This is ow you say? Ah yes. Ze nonsense." Yeah, we're calling it: Time of death: 12:05 p.m. EST]

I will take this as absolute confirmation of the Halo movie. If anyone tries to tell me otherwise, I'll stick my fingers in my ears and yell "BLAH BLAH!"

As long as their heads still explode in a ball of confetti, I'm okay with this.

It would be a little more believable if it didn't say it was coming out in 2012. That's a little sudden for a project that's been dormant for a while and we still don't have confirmation that production has began. It would be a little difficult to keep a project of this magnitude, quiet.

I second that. This is definitely an IP you would want to hype the ever-lovin' hell out of. As they have done in the past.
Too bad IMAGI isn't around anymore. I would've loved to see them make a HALO short film. Or maybe this might end up being a TEKKEN HYBRID-style package deal for HALO4.

2012 and Steven Spielberg thrown in that blurb are good indicators this is fake. A movie that Steven Spielberg is attached to can't be kept secret for so long without on-set leaks or what actors plays who, especially for a movie coming out next year. Even if filming haven't yet start, 2012 is WAY too soon.

Sad that 25 years ago James Cameron made "Aliens" for $18 million with a bunch of vacuum cleaner parts hot-glued to extras. I don't think you'd get "Halo" in the can for anything less than $200 million.

How to Train Your Dragon was probably better than about half of Pixar's movies.
Dreamworks doesn't suck, they just look like the ginger step child compared to Pixar.

I could be quite happy about this if it proved to be true. I'm all for seeing Halo on the big screen, and stepping around the dilemma of how to bring Master Chief to life (actor choice/possible removal of helmet/mucking around with the games' storylines, etc) and diving into the Expanded Haloverse (with Greg Bear's novels no less) might be the way to do it.
Bring the universe to the general populace, let them discover John 117 throughout the games if they wish to dig deeper.

It's just another example of the internet echo chamber. They're probably just quoting your story from last year. I honestly believe that there will be a Halo film eventually, but this isn't an accidental leak.

They should make the movie like those shorts that came out awhile ago.
