Game looks so good. I want this now. Why, Nintendo? WHY!?!?!?

"but, for me, it feels shoe-horned into the whole experience. When I have a perfectly good analog stick sitting right there on the Nunchuk, why do I instead have to shake the Wiimote to get altitude with my bird and then balance the Wiimote in my hand to control its trajectory? Why fix what ain't broke?"

This is a Wii-game in a nutshell. I've played my fair share of them, and there's always some idiotic use of the Wiimote, almost as if just to make you move it, instead of an obviously superior way to do the same, e.g. use the anolog stick.

Exactly. It's why the Wii-motes never see any use at all in my house, or my friends for that matter, unless its to use the Classic/Classic Pro controllers, and they don't even get powered if we decide to use a Gamecube controller.

This preview pretty much confirmed what I was thinking, that Nintendo was dead-set on shoving as much as they could of their motion-plus crap into a first party title in order to justify using it in the first place, as well as milking more sales of the damn thing.

Maybe it just shows that the whole wii concept can't transcend beyond casual games, but, Mario galaxy and Metroid prime seemed to work fine to me, so I'll wait till I play Zelda to decide...but... it is "worrying".

Got to play a bit of it and though it felt like it wasn't needed to make everything use the remote in different ways (the bow and arrow was a bit annoying to get used to at first), I feel if I got enough practice with it, it would be fine.

When you first play this game, it takes all but 30 seconds to get used to. Trust me, once you get your hands on the game, the heavy use of Motion+ won't be bother you at all. Well, at least the demo didn't bother me.

That does happen in some Wii games, but it is always a very small percentage of the actual gameplay. Which seems to be the case here as well.

Given that this is the first generation of such a drastically different control scheme? I'd say the wiimote has made out pretty well.

I'm very much hoping that in the Wii U era developers will spend more time focusing on ideas that worked instead of simply half-assing it and going "well, it's motion so .... let's have them shake to jump!"

Even though I'm excited for it, I would have to agree that MotionPlus is irritating. If they had added the OPTION to choose how you want to control things, that would have been fine. The 1:1 sword play is neat, but using MotionPlus for so many other things will just be annoying.

I'm sure it is annoying (will see how much when I play the game) - but, on the other hand, specifically re tightrope walking sequences - doesn't pretty much every Wii game that has a tightrope walking sequence use the remote (plus or otherwise) for balance?

It's good that you were honest, cause after reading that 10 page Game Informer article about this game, it was starting to seem flawless.

The writer in the GI article couldn't point out a single flaw, he went on for ten pages oozing about how it gave him nostalgia-gasms and made him feel gooey and warm inside and that he played for hours on end and felt nothing but bliss.

I'm not saying that's not true though! Plenty of games do that for me but I didn't hear one mention of all the 'tight-rope' sequences, which quite honestly would bother me. I'm still looking forward to this game a lot, and it's definitely gonna be a day 1 purchase especially with the Golden Wiimote

I'm still ambivalent about this game. Twilight Princess and Spirit Tracks disappointed me terribly, and this looks to carry on a number of the things that turned me away from TP, especially PADDING, and LOTS OF IT.

I'm a little afraid to get my hopes up about SS. From the videos so far it seems to share a stronger relatiionship with TP than with WW...

That's not what the reviewer said. He said it worked fine, but was annoying that they made you use it for certain controls that could have been done with the analogue stick.

Sounds like we're still trying to figure out the best way to incorporate motion controls into a game with traditional controls. That's nothing new to this generation, though.

I'm really glad to hear the Motion+ sword fighting is good, though. Can't wait!

"But far more thrilling is a few more hours into the game, when I was forced to employ strategy in my strikes, analyzing enemy patterns and discovering weak points before I could even think about slashing. This was by far the most thrilling aspect of a Zelda game since..."

You might be able to appreciate a Windows game from 2001 called Blade of Darkness. First time I played it, I got very frustrated. Every enemy encounter seemed overly daunting, right out of the gate. But then I realized that this was the game's main hook: extremely involving melee combat. After playing through it, all subsequent hack & slash games came up far too short in the difficulty department. This is the very definition of a hardcore game.
Anyway, about this new Zelda game...I hope they offer Gamecube controller support or something, because I never have much cared for the Wii's main hook. And visually, this doesn't look nearly as good as Twilight Princess, regarding textures and lighting, and maybe even geometry/models as well.

The whole game is built around Motion+. There is no way that you can play this with an old controller . Gamecube controll support would require Nintendo to reprogram and redesign the entire game.

And I have to disagree with you about the visuals. I find them just as good, if not better than Twilight Princess. Enemies look more organic and detailed, characters look cleaner, and the environment overall looks smooth and crisp, compared to the texture mess of Twilight Princess.

I'm surprised so many people are pumped for motion+ sword fighting.

Combat has never been my favorite thing about any Zelda game (particularly the 3D ones) and the prospect of having to wave my arms around in actual sword fighting motions in a 50+ hour game just sounds like a nightmare.

If this week's episode of RebelFM is to be believed, sword fighting isn't something you'll easily do while seated, either.

@Chareth Cutestory The motions you make can be quite reserved if you want. You don't to imitate a sword to the point of making a full sweeping motion.

Eh, if i made it through Twilight Princess and never felt hampered by the excess use of Motion Control, i'm sure i'll take its more unnecessary components in Skyward Sword in stride

And good to know that combat has been amped up, as that's been the only thing really wanting in modern Zelda games

Yeah, the shoehorning in of Motion controls is what I feared about this game from the start. I can understand they'll want to use as much of it as possible to justify the MotionPlus (especially as this is going to be the Wii's swansong), but I think they're going to get incredibly annoying. They seem to have basically crowbarred all of Wii Sports Resort's controls into a Zelda game, but while they may be fine for Wii Sports Resort, Zelda is an epic adventure game, I can see them getting pretty tiresome. Like having to make an actual full-on bow and arrow mime every time you want to use the bow. Pretty clunky and jarring. Not intuitive because it's slow and cumbersome and not immersive because it puts the focus on actions you're perfoming outside the game environment rather than the actions taking place within the game environment. Good, intuitive, immersive controls should be unnoticeable, I don't see how motion controls can be.

Pretty dang pumped for this game.

As far as the motion controls feeling forced, well, as long as it works and feels natural, I have no problem with it. It doesn't seem like mindless waggle, especially for the combat. Maybe a lot of actions require it, but if it feels responsive and natural, i have no problem with it. I'll withhold any worries or negativity until i play it.
