If it helps, I can't overstate how awesome the freeware version already is. It's the kind of game you can play for ten minutes on a break, and it is one of my favourites in that niche. It's highly strategic and pretty hard, but rewarding.

Seriously, give it a try. http://www.desktopdungeons.net/?page_id=11

Actually if you want to try a nethack like game with some better visuals go here http://crawl.develz.org/wordpress/

Its said to be more difficult than regular nethack but its still a lot of fun and it does at least have some nice pixel graphics.

See, Desktop Dungeons isn't really at all like Nethack. I would say it's more like a puzzle game.

That being said, Stone Soup is pretty awesome.

The real difference between Crawl and Nethack is that while Crawl may technically be tougher, it's only tough because it is hard. Crawl is always fair, and you never feel like your death was bullshit. Nethack, on the other hand, delights in having many, many interactions you never would have predicted, and basically requires you to read spoilers to learn all of the tricks and avoiding dying by, say, eating an egg. Once you learn them, though, the game actually gets surprisingly easy.

The #1 thing i hated about the freeware version is that probably 9/10 of the harder difficulty maps were actually impossible to complete. Its like Freecell. Sometimes you're screwed before the game even begins.

@Destati
You're doing it wrong then.
18/18 on every challenge map, and reached 9 in the Gauntlet. The game is all about knowing how to level catapult, and recuperate health during bosses.

I have to say, I love Desktop Dungeons, I've beaten the living hell out of the alpha, but here's my problem: Asking $15 bucks for a shinier coat of paint on a game you've been giving out for free is borderline insane. Especially since when they had the donation page up ages ago, I already dropped some cash into their coffers. 4 months later they decided to charge for a premium version, and didn't count anyone that supported them early on.

I am disappoint.

@Jennacide Sorry, but we never done a donation thing at all: If you've given us money and haven't received your pre-order account, please let me know and I'll look into it. I can't think of anything else you might be talking about.

Also, the full version is so much more than just new graphics. Only making the game look prettier is exactly what we refused to do from the word go...

The alpha is definitely superior than the beta. Simpler, faster (especially in the setup phase as it's just 3 clicks at most to get into the action, and when it comes to movement because the beta makes it awkward by forcing you to use only the mouse), more attractive graphics (despite being low-res - the 16-bittishness of them was part of the charm), and more challenging unlocks (I've played the alpha for more than a month now and still only have the Transmuter unlocked from the bonus classes and none of the bonus races, and it took over a week to unlock the regular classes - unlike the alpha where I had the regular classes in 2 or 3 sessions) make the alpha far more fun than the beta.

Really liked the free version as well. $15 does feel bit steep for the full version. Had it been fiver like The Binding of Isaac it would have been insta-buy
