Talk about your qwik turnaround. Netflix CEO Reed Hastings announced this morning that Netflix won't split into two separate services as planned. The news comes less than a month after the company's stock went into freefall following its announced split into disc-based and streaming entities named Qwikster and Netflix, respectively.
"It is clear that for many of our members two websites would make things more difficult, so we are going to keep Netflix as one place to go for streaming and DVD," Hasting wrote on the company's official blog this morning. "This means no change: one website, one account, one password... in other words, no Qwikster."
There is no update on Netflix's desire to enter the video game rental space in Hastings' post. We are currently following up with the company to find out if those plans have changed too.
Update: A Netflix spokesperson tells the New York Times that the company has yet to determine whether it will move forward with the video game rental plan.

Yeah dont they realize that in a few short years there will be no more dvds or blurays. It will ALL be streaming. Then what would they have done? Change Qwikster back to Netflix? Stupid.

I hope your joking...
It's funny that Blu-ray is gaining in sales, and physical media still brings in billions of dollars every year (which is a lot more than digital). I guess some people will never understand there there are lots of people that don't care for streaming/digital or you know use both.

@Senor Whopper Man, I look forward to reading the book "How Netflix Was Destroyed in a Day"
Seriously, how have they managed to destroy a company like this? First it was the rates, then this idiotic move, then a withdrawal which just makes them look like they are floundering. I have very little confidence in them at this point.

Even the fastest broadband available in the US maxes out at less than half and even a third of blu-ray's average bitrate. That isn't 'overkill' either on the blu-ray side. There are still films with moire/rainbow/macroblocks on the format even with such a high bitrate. That's why most streaming stuff is 720p (which is less than half of blu's bandwidth). Low bitrate 1080p might be fine a smaller sets to those with less discriminating eyes, but a good 1080p24 encoded blu-ray can look pretty darn amazing, better than your local 35mm cinema*
*4k, 6k, and 8k are scanning resolutions. They are not the resolution of film. 35mm film has on average of 3k-4k of details that can be scanned out. Studios do 8k scans for piece of mind and downsample to 4k. Any scan downsampled to 2k from 35mm will mostly retain all of the detail. 1080p is about 2k (1920 is about 2024) not 1k like some say, you go by horizontal. 2k digital projectors are usually 1920x1080 and are less compressed than blus. Nearly all hollywood films are scanned at 2k with effects at 4k before put back on film. Blus come right from the digital masters. The contact printing process and projected image of 35mm has less than 700 lines. So non-digital cinema is about 720p. I just typed all this because I'm tired of people who say that 35mm has a higher resolution. Technically yes from a scanning stand point, but not in the way you think. Blu-ray beats the cinema. Google it for more info.

It's good to know that losing a million comments and thousands of negative comments can change the course of action with a big company.
How do these idiots get to be CEO? Even when I worked crappy IT support, I learned how to keep a customer happy. You don't just raise the prices by a huge margin and not give something extra to the customer.

Spend 14 years establishing a well known and mostly liked brand only to split it and change the name. Who thought this sounded like a good idea? It's like Nintendo's handling of the 3DS. It just makes them look like they are flying by the seat of their pants. Netflix is still a great service but I'm not sure how they got that way if their CEO runs it like this.
