I agree that releasing an old, very flawed beta so close to the release of the game is bad strategy. However, the objective of a beta release is not just to kill bugs or to showcase a game. It is in fact to gather feedback on whether the game is suitable for its players.

Battlefield 3 was built upon the premise of taking all the great features of Bad Company 2's multiplayer and merging it with a slightly more arcade kind of game similar to Call of Duty Modern Warfare X. Mechanics from both franchises have been merged in this game but there was the problem, as you mentioned, that maybe it felt more like one than the other, and that's why the beta is so important: so that players can say "you know, this feels a little too fast", or "guys, I liked it better when there was more strategy" and so on. Games like these are built already expecting things to be tweaked - remember Killzone 2's faster aim patch?

You also have to take into account that the PC beta had a different build number - it was closer to the final game than the console versions - and played quite differently already. I played both PS3 and PC versions and I felt the difference in sniper aiming and soldier "toughness", taking more time to die.

In the end, DICE/EA probably got to a certain volume of feedback saying that players wanted the gameplay to be more BC2-like, and the version you played is *not* DICE/EA being all "yay we tricked you in the beta" but "we listened to you and here's a better game" instead.

@fernandolins But the main complaint wasn't about the glitches, the main complaint was how it didn't represent the battlefield series.

I was planning to get BF3 and MW3 and was going to have a tough time focusing on two big MP games at the same time.

Now, after playing the BF3 beta, I've decided that I will only get MW3 and be able to really focus on it.

Yeah the actual BF3 game might be significantly better than the beta, but I can't bring myself to buy a game when the only sample given out was crap.

I agree with you, Battlefield 3 BETA was fun game. I also agree with you that there were so many problems in the BETA too. But when I read that the BETA was completely different from the main game, I got my hope back about this game. I was even amaze of the little things they put on the game to make it better. Thanks for writing this Article.

I have to say I have already pre-ordered the game and this article just reaffirms my decision to do so. I did pre-order before the beta was released though.

Still buying it on release night, and I will enjoy it. The Beta had it's fair share of problems, but I understand that it's a beta. My hate during the Beta didn't stem from the glitches, but from the map itself. Operation Metro really doesn't fit the way Battlefield is meant to play. Other than that, I'm excited. Seeing the Operation Firestorm gameplay helped reaffirm my confidence in DICE. Can't wait to see the final form and how it turns out. If the glitches are still there, oh well. I've played games with more problems at launch than any of the Battlefield games *cough* Modern Warfare 2 *cough*.......

I was turned off by the beta...

I still was going to give the game a try by renting it and test the MP.
Then they decided to shoot themselves in the foot (again) with an online pass.
So, this game went from a possible buy (from before the beta) to a try then buy if I liked it (after the beta) to a "just give up on it".
I am pretty sure there are lots of other gamers out there that feel pretty much the same...
and no, I have never owned any of the other Battlefields. And I am not a COD fanboy, I just own COD4 and got Black Ops as a gift.
