In light of last week's report that Deadliest Warrior studio head Robert Daly had misrepresented his military experience, Daly has resigned as head of Pipeworks Software. In a statement issued this afternoon, Daly expressed regret at having "misrepresented my role by creating the impression that I was a 'Green Beret.'" He further added that he has "nothing but the utmost respect for the Green Berets and my fellow servicemen."
Daly also won't be appearing on future episodes of Deadliest Warrior, the Spike television show. "At this point in time for the best interests of Pipeworks Software and F9E [Foundation 9 Entertainment] I am voluntarily resigning my position of Studio Head of Pipeworks effective immediately," he said. "Furthermore, I have no plans on appearing in any more episodes of Deadliest Warrior."

That's a blanket statement and it really doesn't apply to what you are trying to convey, at least i don't think so.....i hope so

@elliotrock Yeah because a ton of bloody and violent revolutions didn't happen anywhere but the US. French Revolution? Never happened. Any other kind of bloody revolution Pre-US in Asian countries? NEVER HAPPENED.

If you don't have respect for someone who puts their life on the line so you can live in a country where you have the freedom of speech that allows you to post this kind of talk then maybe you are the one who needs to get a life.

I don't understand why a soldier in the US army wouldn't defend a person's freedom to say what they want about the armed forces. What freedoms do you fight for, LastDruid? The freedom to hold your opinion to yourself?
As far as I'm concerned, those brave soldiers of the past died so elliotrock could look at guns and war as a bad thing and say so without fear of people persecuting him.
If you want to honor their sacrifices, allowing elliot his vocal criticisms is one way to do so; oppressing him is doing exactly the opposite.

In all understandability of respecting the freedoms our soldiers give to us, I still do not think allowing someone to post such comments about them is the decent thing to do for the sake of "honoring" them.
Point is the original poster obviously wanted a rise out of some ordinary good-minded people. He hasn't come back to defend his/herself so I would just let it be. One more asshole I'd rather just mail over to some other country since America and its military is so "bad"

Guys, GUYS. There is a legitimate debate to be had about whether or not armed forces de facto deserve respect. But it's not happening because the instant someone says "I don't support The Troops," everyone descends on them like a swarm of angry locust-vulture-bees.
Can we please, please, please ever once have a sane discussion about this? We're doing rational discourse a huge disservice by automatically just saying that everyone in the military is fighting for our freedoms and has earned our admiration.
It is a dangerous job, but there are so many other professions that are more vital to our day-to-day lives that put themselves in harm's way and don't get the same level of deep thanks. If it's okay to criticize police for bad practices or for being jerks, why can't do we do the same thing for members of the military?
Please keep the knee-jerk reactions down, guys! We need to actually talk about this once in a while!

@elliotrock I'm sure everyone will just call me a a commie troll, but I never understood myself why we should automatically have respect for people just because they went to war. Why do we say to support our troops but not the war? Was it not the soldier's decision to fight the war? Why do we automatically give praise to anyone who decides to fight for what the government says is "For our freedom", no matter how accurate that statement is? Why do we hate on the politicians who make us go to war, but have to be supportive of people who voluntary go to war for the abstract goal of "fighting for freedom"?
Notice how he said ANYONE with a gun, too- not just America. I'm sorry if some of you seem to think anyone who says something bad about the military is only attacking America when he clearly says ANYONE.
So yes, I agree we should not have auto respect for anyone who goes to war for an abstract cause that really doesn't mean anything. Then again, I'm just some leftist angsty communist, so I'm sure my opinion doesn't matter. Oh well.

Agreed, that was a very thoughtful comment. I think people become understandably hyperbolic about this issue and elliotrock is a total douche about it.
With that said, it does seem to come off a bit insincere to give blind admiration to any individual in uniform. A lot of people in the military join because it is there only option for a somewhat secure future, not to mention the thousands of dollars of signing bonuses the recruiters dangle infront of many impoverished youths. For many in uniform the military offers universal heathcare, steady pay, and some a career and there is nothing wrong with that, but automaticly assuming that some dude who joined the Air Force or Army did it out of national pride can but that person you are praising in an uncomfortable situation of guilt.
This is coming from a guy who grew up around the military. Trust me our "troops" don't go around thanking each other giving patriotic high fives or even seekout the admiration of civilians.

While he may have fought for the freedom for people to say whatever they want, it doesn't mean he has to agree with them nor that he can't tell them his opinion in return. "I disagree with your statement but I'll defend unto death your right to say it" and all that.

@jsx92 While I don't know the ins and outs entirely, what I can glean added to what my logic has filled in makes me think he was basically an office worker for the special forces. So when he said that he was part of the special forces he wasn't technically lying, just omitting that he was the guy who manned the phones, checked the emails, etc; and not the guy who went out making rambo look like a namby pampy.
I could be wrong; but if I'm not, then I don't see how it's fraud. Just clever use of wording.

@Bobrek In general, it's consider a major ethical breach to claim membership in an elite military force when you, in fact, were not. This wasn't a question of sophistry; there are specific membership lists, entrance programs and trials and honors associated with particular military groups. Claiming membership in them is considered an egregious fault amongst current and former military members. So much so, in fact, that the president signed a law in 2005 called the "Stolen Valor Act" to make it a federal crime (said law was deemed far too broad and struck down as unconsitutional).
Many people who lay claims to greater military service often do so for personal gain (in some cases defrauding charities or misleading well-meaning people)...so I can understand why some would be very upset over it.

@BlueRajasmyk In my opinion it has nothing directly to do with games, but DOES speak to the integrity of the person in question. If I were one of his workers or investors, I would find myself wondering what else he had 'embellished'. It just makes him and the company look bad. If he'd never claimed it, he'd probably still have a job. But he told a lie, got caught, and now will face the repercussion of being a liar.

People claim to be members of the special forces community every day. Unfortunately most of them never get called out.
Chances are, if you meet anybody claiming to be a navy SEAL, or Green Beret or the like, there's a 99.9% chance they are lying.
