Use Game Center much? Some potential patents Apple has filed for may hint at more robust features coming to the platform in the future -- specifically, avatars. Apple's documents (via AppleInsider) show customization options and fully animated avatars akin to Nintendo's Miis or Microsoft Xbox 360 avatars, which the company is apparently aiming to incorporate into Game Center.
The patents were originally filed in April of this year and talk about the usual rigmarole that comes with avatars, such as funny hats. There's also the possibility for these avatars to appear in games, Apple noted in the filings.

Are they going to try to sue everyone else that uses avatar characters?

I wouldn't be surprised, and they're not even going to be the first mobile platform with avatars

If its one thing Apple knows best beyond computers is patent infringement. From the countless years of suing the hell out of everyone else. They know how to step and where to step.

Sony is going to do this next-gen. The reason they haven't is because, they didn't plan the programming of the XMB onto the PS3 enough into the future.
I guess the PC will be the only platform that doesn't require action avatars.

Great, more useless crap for my already full ipod to run.
I'm still baffled on why cant they just make an app killer (like you can get on a jailbroken itouch) so my crap can run properly.

The name GameCenter sounds cheap, like something the cell phone company would call there own little game store where you buy Solitaire and Bubble Bobble knockoffs.

You may have gotten downvoted, but I agree with you. I have never needed a dumb, poorly conceived avatar for online gaming, and I think it's all been a waste of programming time.

I got downvoted because it sounds like I'm bashing Nintendo. I like Nintendo. I just don't like this whole Avatar "thing", and for all the other great things that they do, Nintendo is primarily responsible for this.
I actually like character generation. I like making characters. But I like making them in the context of whatever game I'm playing, based on the genre, my role in the game, and the game's engine (Dragon Age seems to be hardcoded to favor redheaded women). I don't want my warriors to look like my mages. And more importantly, I don't want to play as myself.

Since the Wii! I always wanted similar avatars on the PS3, and now perhaps on Game Centre!

Could be kinda cool, and might give Game Center a bit more personality.
